  • Patent number: 5290516
Abstract: A method and product whereby color changing indicator salts such as cobaltous salts, preferably CoCl.sub.2 or CoBr.sub.2, are firmly adhered to sand, other particulate silicas or other carriers so that unwanted fines, material loss and solvent washing characteristic of prior indicator salt-coated carriers are eliminated. The process is carried out by thoroughly dehydrating a quantity of cobaltous salts and dissolving and storing the dehydrated cobaltous salt in absolute alcohol, preferably absolute ethanol. The absolute alcohol/cobaltous salt solution is then contacted onto a dehydrated or anhydrous carrier material and the absolute alcohol solvent is removed.

  • Patent number: 5289005
Abstract: An electron microscope capable of performing accurate X-ray analysis. A specimen stage on which a specimen to be investigated is placed, is disposed between the upper and lower magnetic pole pieces of the objective lens. The specimen is irradiated with the electron beam to detect X-rays emitted from the specimen. The specimen stage consists of a light element, such as beryllium, that produces a very small amount of X-rays when irradiated with the electron beam. A metal film of a heavy element, such as gold, is deposited on the upper surface of the specimen stage. This metal film produces a large amount of X-rays when irradiated with the electron beam. The X-rays emitted from the lower magnetic pole piece are absorbed by the metal film. Consequently, the X-ray detector of the microscope detects only the X-rays produced from the specimen.

  • Patent number: 5285066
Abstract: A simple imaging XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectrometry) system using a coaxial spherical sector electron energy analyzer. The system can obtain a two-dimensional photoelectron image of the analyzed sample surface. The energy analyzer (1) includes an input slit (11) extending in the y-direction. An image representing the distribution of the energies of photoelectrons ejected from the sample (S) is focused onto the input slit (11) by an input lens system (5). Only photoelectrons passed through the slit (11) are analyzed by the analyzer (1) and detected by a multichannel detector (12) disposed at least in the y-direction in the focal plane of the analyzer. A pair of deflection plates (10) capable of deflecting the image representing the distribution in the x-direction are mounted within the input lens system (5). Photoelectrons distributed in the y-direction are detected simultaneously by the detector (12).

  • Patent number: 5284782
Abstract: A process for formation of a delta-doped quantum well field effect transistor is disclosed, and the transistor includes: a substrate, a super lattice, a buffer layer, quantum wells, a cap layer, and an ohmic layer. Then a drain, a source and a gate are formed on the ohmic layer. Each of the quantum wells is formed in such a manner that: a first GaAs layer is formed by applying a metalorganic chemical vapor deposition process under a low reaction pressure; then an Si impurity such as SiH4 or Si2H6 is delta-doped into the layer; and then, a second GaAs layer is formed by applying the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition process under the same condition, thereby forming the GaAs/AlGaAs delta-doped quantum well field effect transistor of the present invention, having the advantage of economy.
