  • Patent number: 4357505
Abstract: A group operated circuit disconnect apparatus for overhead electric power lines has a base in the form of a box-like housing which mounts on a pole, an upright shaft extends through the housing, and a transverse shaft also extends through the housing. A linkage is mounted on the shafts in the housing so that axial rotation of the transverse shaft axially rotates the upright shaft, and this causes three circuit disconnect switches mounted on the housing to be moved simultaneously between closed positions and open positions, or vice versa. An electric motor driven screw and nut drive subassembly for the transverse shaft is mounted in the housing; and the ends of the housing have removable closure plates for access to the linkage and for removal of the subassembly.

  • Patent number: 4354841
Abstract: A prerecorded magnetic audio tape, and method of instruction utilizing the tape, are disclosed wherein at least two series of associated recorded phrases are recorded on separate tape tracks of a multi-track tape. The phrases in each series are separated by intermediate sections and the phrases of each series are staggered in the longitudinal direction of tape advance such that the phrases of one series alternate with the phrases of the other series, without overlap. At least a third track is recorded with continuous background sounds, the subject matter of which is substantitively related to the subject matter of the recorded phrases so as to enhance listener interest and learning effectiveness.

  • Patent number: 4354624
Abstract: An apparatus for injecting slurry in a field has a wheeled slurry tank, a feed conduit communicating with the interior of the tank, a transverse manifold to receive slurry from the feed conduit, several slurry injector pipes spaced along the conduit, and either a slurry pump or air pressurizing means for moving slurry from the tank under pressure for discharge through the feed conduit, the manifold, and the injector pipes. In all the slurry injector pipes are identical flow controlling and equalizing elements which have a single orifice and which are formed of elastomeric material which can flex to facilitate passing solid debris through the orifice. The orifice size provides a positive pressure head in the manifold so all the pipes deliver substantially equal quantities of slurry per unit time under varying conditions of operation.

  • Patent number: 4353493
Abstract: A film advance mechanism is provided in which film is advanced stepwise by two reciprocal film-engagement pins (20). The pins (20) are mounted on a cam follower (10) and the pins and cam follower are arranged to rotate relative to a circular cam (12). The surface profile of the cam (12) moves the pins (20) into engagement with the film during about 60.degree. every revolution thereby allowing the film to be stationary for about 300.degree.. Two reciprocal location pins (33) are also provided which are synchronized with the film-engagement pins and are arranged to engage the film only when the film is stationary.

  • Patent number: 4353674
Abstract: A drag bucket apparatus for separating pieces of solid material from liquid in a rectangular receiving tank includes driven trolleys that move along the longitudinal tank walls to pull a drag bucket along the tank from a start end to a dump end. If the drag bucket encounters excessive resistance during a pickup run, a pickup level control automatically raises the bucket incrementally to eliminate such excessive resistance; and when the trolleys near the dump end of the tank the bucket is automatically elevated to a discharge level and when the bucket is at the dump end its load of material is automatically dumped onto a material support out of the liquid. The drag bucket is then lowered and returned to the start end for another pickup run which may begin at once, or which may be delayed depending upon the conditions encountered during the last preceding pickup run.

  • Patent number: 4353393
Abstract: A vacuum system for operating a member, such as a signature gripper of a collator which must be actuated and released at regular intervals, conventionally has a slide-type valve which is constantly reciprocated by a cam-operated pushrod between an open position to connect the member to vacuum and a closed position to isolate the member from vacuum. To selectively disable and enable the gripper for selective feed of signatures, an air cylinder and piston unit is used as part of the pushrod so the length of the pushrod may be changed by retracting or extending the air cylinder piston. When the piston is retracted the valve is reciprocated between an open and a normal closed position; while extension of the piston causes the valve to be reciprocated between the normal closed position and a second closed position.

  • Patent number: 4352644
Abstract: An air-hydraulic pump wherein an air-motor drives the pump. The air-motor includes a reciprocal piston which is driven in one direction by fluid under pressure and is returned by a spring. A control valve is utilized to control the action of fluid under pressure on the piston with the control valve having an open position which is maintained by trapped fluid pressure within a piston chamber in which the control valve is positioned. The control valve is closed by physical contact thereof with an end wall of the cylinder movably mounting the piston at the end of the return stroke and a resilient member is positioned adjacent the cylinder end wall to maintain the control valve in closed position for a portion of the piston stroke as it moves away from the cylinder end wall in the pumping stroke to avoid a possible stall condition for the motor.

  • Patent number: 4352306
Abstract: Socket member storage means for a set of interchangeable sockets of a socket wrench has a longitudinal wall defining a long, narrow storage cavity which has an entrance opening along one side and which is divided into several distinct portions, each of which receives one socket member of a set. A separate retaining strap on each portion of the storage cavity has one end hinged on one side of the wall and has a fastener on the other end detachably connecting it to the other side of the wall to snugly embrace and retain one socket member in the storage cavity. Detachment of the fastening means of one strap permits removal of the one socket member from the storage cavity independently of any other socket member. Preferably, the longitudinal wall provides the handle of the wrench.

  • Patent number: 4352843
Abstract: A multiplanar device has at least one component that consists of two rigid plastic wall members that have major areas of substantially uniform thickness, strips of considerably greater thickness along the side portions of said wall members, and a miter joint between the two wall members. A continuous thin film of flexible plastic is bonded to the two wall members and around the outside of the miter joint. The method of making the component is to mold it as a flat intermediate piece with a V-notch between the strips of greater thickness and to simultaneously bond the film to the surface at the apex of the V; and to thereafter apply adhesive to the sides of the V and bend the piece to bring the sides of the notch together and bond them together.Several such components may be connected with other similar or dissimilar components at miter joints to form a complete multiplanar device.

  • Patent number: 4352318
Abstract: An expandable cushion plunger for use with a fluid pressure driven piston and cylinder device includes a cushion sleeve mounted on a piston rod in floating relation thereto, and having a skirt, the interior of which is exposed to the cushioning fluid within the cylinder. As the piston nears the end of its stroke, the sleeve begins to enter a fluid exit port, trapping fluid between the piston and the cylinder head, which will slow and cushion the piston travel as it approaches the cylinder head. As the sleeve continues to enter the fluid exit port, the pressure of the trapped fluid increases due to the smaller size of the annular orifice between the sleeve and the port as compared with the port size. The cushion sleeve may expand under influence of increased pressure, further restricting the flow of pressurized fluid through the annular orifice to provide smooth deceleration of the piston as it reaches the end of its stroke and comes to rest against the cylinder head without undesirable impact.

  • Patent number: 4349978
Abstract: A fishing device is provided which in a single structure can be used to perform a plurality of fishing operations, such as a motorized jigging operation, a casting operation, a trolling operation and a motorized jigging trolling operation. The device imparts a lifelike swimming action and oscillatory movement to lures, to baits and to live or plastic minnows. This imparted action and movement is caused by an electric motor in the handle which revolves an eccentric striker arm to deflect a length of line positioned in the path of the striker arm. Two separate control means permit the device to impart such movements to lures and baits of differing weights, sizes, buoyancies and physical structures. The first control is a variable rheostat which varies the angular velocity of the striker arm and thus varies the rate at which the striker arm contacts the length of fishing line positioned in the path of the striker arm.
