Abstract: A casting mold for manufacturing grid plates for lead batteries makes use of easily interchangeable mold inserts for each half of a two-part, external metallic mold holder. The mold inserts are made of a highly porous microfiber nonwoven material, and render unnecessary the conventional cork-flour coating of casting molds due to good thermal insulating properties, high permeability to air and non-wettability by lead. The casting mold inserts are manufactured in a process which involves fixing of the nonwoven material with a curable binder either during or after shaping of the negative for the grid plate, so that the resulting parts assume a cardboard-like consistency.
Abstract: A central control unit (scanner) is connected across a set of subscriber loops. At each subscriber's premises, an individual subscriber terminal unit (STU) is connected across that particular subscriber's loop. To each STU are connected the various instrumentalities which are to be monitored by the system, e.g. fire alarms, burglar alarms, etc. FSK modulated signals in the upper part of the audible range are transmitted from the scanner to the STUs at appropriate times. The STUs reply by means of similar signals to indicate the status (e.g. alarm, or non-alarm) of the instrumentalities at the respective subscriber premises. This transmission and retransmission is interrupted when the subscriber's telephone is off-hook. In addition, a signal below the audible range (low tone) is produced at the STU, and transmitted to the scanner over the telephone loop when all the instrumentalities at the particular subscriber premises are in a given state (e.g. non-alarm).

Abstract: The dextran derivatives have a molecular weight higher than about 5000 daltons and comprise statistically at least about 35% of units substituted by radicals having a COO.sup.- function and at least 3% of units comprising a group of structure ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is a single bond; or a ##STR2## group, R.sub.2 is an anion of an inorganic or an organic salt and n is a number from 1 to 4.
Abstract: The cell of a gas-tight alkaline battery is balanced by subdividing the negative excess capacity into the necessary charge and discharge reserves by individually treating the two electrode polarities prior to their assembly, while avoiding open cell forming. When combining a charged, dried, positive sintered electrode which is suitable for storage with a negative electro-deposited electrode, the latter inherently receives a charge reserve due to partial chemical oxidation with H.sub.2 O.sub.2 l or K.sub.2 S.sub.2 O.sub.8. When a discharged, but preformed positive sintered electrode is combined with a negative sintered electrode, the latter is electrochemically partially charged to the extent necessary to achieve the desired discharge reserve, and thereafter preserved by immersion in a solution containing sulfuric acid, and possibly CdSO.sub.4.

Abstract: The accumulations of molten lead which correspond to the lugs and frames of molded starter battery plates can be caused to solidify at the same rate as the much thinner grids of the plates by providing a mold having inserts made from a material whose thermal conductivity is higher than that of the base material of the mold in the regions of the mold which are used to form the lugs and frames, provided these inserts are disposed as close as possible to a system of cooling channels. The ratio of the thermal conductivity of the material from which the inserts are made to the thermal conductivity of the base material of the mold should approximate the ratio of the material accumulations on the lugs and frames to that on the rest of the grid.
Abstract: A mold for producing connecting straps for lead batteries, particularly according to a cast-on-strap (COS) process or the like, is especially adapted for the simultaneous casting-in of a pole insert, and has wall thicknesses which vary inversely to changes in the thickness of the connecting strap. Heat transition adjusted to the local accumulation of material on the casting is thus achieved, and the development of unequal temperature conditions during the entire casting process is avoided.
Abstract: A distribution conveyor for packages and the like having at least one transport including a carrier on which the packages are placed, and adapted to travel on an endless track responsive to a spaced, free-working chain. Each transport is further provided with cylinders which are connected to the transport for rotation about horizontal and vertical axes, and which are arranged in the direction of travel. The track is provided with generally parallel rails which are vertically arranged in rising, dipping and spiralling running areas so that the carriers are adjusted to remain horizontal in these areas.

Abstract: In a galvanic primary cell, the anode mixture of a zinc-alkaline electrolyte gel is displaced by the introduction of a hollow body into the concentrically arranged anode space so that the zinc powder is fixed in a layer oriented toward the cathode of the cell, ensuring proper discharge, and so that the aqueous portion of the anode mixture can escape inside the displacement body through narrow openings in the body's wall. By attaching the displacement body to the negative electrode conductor, the current drainage can be improved by making at least part of the displacement body of a metallically conducting material.
Abstract: A heart valve having a disc (10) pivotally mounted within a ring (14) by means of projections (16, 18 and 20) carried by the ring. The disc and ring are arranged so that the blood flows through the valve as the disc moves relative to the ring so as to reduce the likelihood of blood clot formations, in turn, reducing the likelihood of thrombosis.
Abstract: A tensioning device for use with an endless traverse which is longitudinally adjustable in both directions responsive to a rotational drive. The rotational drive includes two driving gears which are each selectively coupled with a drive shaft so that when one of the driving gears is positively driven, the other driving gear is permitted to rotate freely. The traverse changes from one driving gear to the other by passing from between a pair of overlying side walls and over a flange. Elongation resulting from strain of the traverse is continuously led out of the system so that blocking or braking of the traverse is avoided. The tensioning device is especially suitable for the operation of strip curtains or conventional curtains, as well as for curtain systems with large and heavy traverses.

Abstract: In galvanic high-energy cells with negative light-metal electrodes (e.g., Li) and electrolyte component solvents including ether with a CH bond activated by the neighboring groups --O--, .dbd.CO or .dbd.N, the formation of explosive peroxides is inhibited by adding stabilizer substances to the electrolyte in amounts of about 100 ppm. These stabilizer substances can include alkyl-substituted phenols, especially 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol, and readily oxidizable organosulfur and organophosphorus compounds such as trimethylphosphite. This permits safe handling of the cells, even under unusual operating conditions (e.g., prolonged overcharging at high current).
Abstract: Undesirable heavy metal peroxides formed during the continuous partial oxidation of cadmium electrodes made from a charged strip of material, by means of H.sub.2 O.sub.2, to introduce a charge reserve prior to incorporation in a sealed alkaline battery cell, are removed by an immersion treatment in an alkaline hydroxide solution, with simultaneous desorption of oxygen and removal of the heat of hydrogenation. A subsequent boric acid immersion bath is used to neutralize introduced alkaline residues and to improve the stability of the strip during storage. The phenomena which accompany peroxide decomposition (intense evolution of heat and sputtering of electrolyte) in the completely assembled cell during the introduction of the electrolyte, and which interfere with the metering of the electrolyte, are thus avoided.
