Abstract: A method for mobile communication includes arranging a plurality of access points in a wireless local area network (WLAN) to communicate over the air with a mobile station, and linking the access points to one another over a communication medium. The access points exchange control messages over the communication medium using a code division multiple access (CDMA) protocol, and responsive to the control messages, transmit signals over the air to the mobile station.

Abstract: A method for managing windows in a window-based display system, the method comprising providing a plurality of windows, each window being associated with an application, at least one of the plurality of windows being able to accept focus, assigning, to each one of the plurality of windows being able to accept focus, a focus priority, assigning focus to exactly one window at any time by choosing, from among the at least one of the plurality of windows able to accept focus, a window having a highest focus priority of the windows able to accept focus, and designating the chosen window as an active window. Related apparatus and methods are also described.

Abstract: A method of treating chronic hepatitis B is disclosed that comprises administering a T cell-stimulating amount of a vaccine to a patient. The vaccine comprises an immunogenic amount of chimeric, carboxy-terminal truncated hepatitis B virus nucleocapsid (core) protein (HBc) that is engineered for both enhanced stability of self-assembled particles and the substantial absence of nucleic acid binding by those particles. The chimeric protein molecule can include one or more immunogenic epitopes peptide-bonded to one or more of the N-terminus, the immunogenic loop or the C-terminus of HBc. The enhanced stability of self-assembled particles is obtained by the presence of at least one heterologous cysteine residue near one or both of the amino-terminus and carboxy-terminus of the chimer molecule.

Abstract: The invention relates to a line terminating device for a subscriber line which transmits and receives broadband signals via a single subscriber line, a broadband signal being composed of a broadband or narrowband audio-frequency data signal and a broadband higher-frequency data signal and the frequency bands of the voice signal and of the data signal essentially not overlapping. The line terminating device according to the invention has a digital frequency separating filter in the digital section of the line terminating device, which is arranged in the digital section of the line terminating device so that the audio-frequency voice signal is separated from the higher-frequency data signal. In particular, the line terminating device is suitable for separating an ISDN or POTS voice signal from an ADSL data signal.

Abstract: The invention provides a movable walkway installation (10), such as an escalator or a travelator, which installation (10) includes a movable support member (18) for transporting persons supported thereon, a movable handrail (16) for gripping by persons transported by the movable support member (18), and a disinfecting device (14) which is installed and positioned for disinfecting the movable handrail (16) during movement of the handrail (16) past the disinfecting device (14). The disinfecting device (10) may be arranged to produce ultra-violet radiation selected to have a disinfecting or germicidal effect.

Abstract: A leveraged end cap, which can be removably placed onto existing batons, permits a user to grasp a baton at a lower position along the baton. The leveraged end cap defines a location that can be grasped using the little finger, or pinky, of the hand such that the baton is pivoted about the little finger providing an additional length of lever arm equivalent to about one hand length. The baton held in this manner is locked into place until released, such that slippage or accidental dropping of the baton are minimized. The increased lever arm created by the use of the leveraged end cap allows the user to generate a strike force in the baton equivalent to a longer length baton, permitting the user to adopt a smaller, more easily concealable and lighter weight baton.

Abstract: The apparatus, system, and method facilitates the replacement of software components. New versions of software components and files may be transmitted to a computer system for purposes of updating the existing software components and files on that computer system. Automatic updating systems, as are currently known in the art, may however, create problems in the receiving computer system if the transmitted software components or files are corrupt or are incompatible with the software already installed on the receiving computer. The apparatus includes a data construct that, when appended to a software component or file for transmission through a communications network, facilitates the detection of transmission errors and of system incompatibilities. This construct (trailer) includes compatibility tags for use with a rule engine or other apparatus to guarantee a software component's ability to coexist with other components within the receiving computer system.

Abstract: A method and system for determining a language of a call handled by an automatic call distributor is disclosed. The method includes the steps of detecting the call, sampling an audio portion of the call, fitting a plurality of templates to the sampled portion of the call, and determining a language of the call based upon a best relative fit between one of the plurality of audio templates and the sampled portion of the call.

Abstract: The method or system for conferencing an email message such that two or more individuals can simultaneously answer an email message and input their individual expertise on a solution or answer to the email message comprising the steps of or software and circuitry for: receiving and processing an email message at an email server, supplying the email message to a custom SIP user agent to initiate an email session which simultaneously delivers the email message to client agents each containing a custom SIP user agent for processing/answering the email.

Abstract: A food composition in which omega-3 fatty acids are stabilized against oxidation is disclosed. The food composition contains about 4 to about 100 weight percent of the composition in which triglycerides containing omega-3 fatty acids (and other fatty acids) are stabilized against oxidation in the absence of encapsulation. The fatty acid portion of the oil in the completed food composition includes less than about 10 percent by weight linoleic acid, at least 75 percent by weight of monounsaturated plus saturated fatty acids, and at least 3 percent by weight omega-3 fatty acids. The food composition can also contain comminuted peanuts, e.g., peanut butter, in which case the composition is also stabilized against photo-oxidation and the fatty acid portion of the oil portion of the food can contain less than about 15 percent by weight linoleic acid and at least 1 percent by weight omega-3 fatty acids. Methods of protecting a food composition from oxidation and photodegradation are also disclosed.

Abstract: Resin particles comprised of an acrylic resin. Not only is the maximum compression deformation ratio thereof as great as 60% or more but also the load required for 60% compression deformation is as small as 60 mN or less. Wiring boards are therefore coupled in using an anisotropic conductive adhesive obtained by first manufacturing conductive particles having a conductive coating formed on a resin particle surface of the resin particles by adhering a conductive material to the surface of the above resin particles as a core. On dispersing the conductive particles in an adhesive material, the conductive particles sandwiched between metallic wires of the wiring boards are greatly deformed by a small load, so that the electrical devices having a high conduction reliability can be obtained.

Abstract: A method of enabling a server to contact an unknown Internet account holder can begin with the server receiving a request for a resource. The server then determines whether the request for the resource warrants sending a notice, and if so, identifies a notice destination to which the notice is to be sent. The server then generates a notice comprising an apparent IP address, a time the server received the request, and a communication; and sends the notice to the notice destination via a standardized communications pathway. An ISP can receive a notice from the server via the standardized communication pathway, and based thereon can identify the account holder based the requesting IP and optionally the request time. The ISP can then send the account holder the communication by an arranged manner despite the server not having known the identity of the account holder.

Abstract: The present invention is for a high performance data cable which has an interior support or star separator. The star separator or interior support extends along the longitudinal length of the data cable. The star separator or interior support has a central region. A plurality of prongs or splines extend outward from the central region along the length of the central region. Each prong or spline is adjacent with at least two other prongs or splines. The prongs or splines may be helixed or S-Z shaped as they extend along the length of the star separator or interior support. Each pair of adjacent prongs or splines defines grooves which extend along the longitudinal length of the interior support. At least two of the grooves have disposed therein an insulated conductor. The interior support can have a first material and a different second material. The different second material forms an outer surface of the interior support.

Abstract: A low pressure turbine shroud assembly includes a backsheet with enhanced blade containment capabilities that is sized to be retrofitted into a conventional low pressure turbine assembly. The backsheet has first and second mounting rails at axially opposite ends thereof and a blade containment sheet shield disposed therebetween. The rails and the containment shield are of a uniformly increased thickness as compared with a conventional backsheet rail and containment shield design. The assembly also includes a modified mounting hook for mounting the improved backsheet to a case extending around the shroud. The mounting hook is of reduced thickness as compared with a conventional mounting hook for a conventional backsheet proportional to the increase in thickness of the backsheet. The assembly also can include a rub strip disposed between a radially inner surface of the backsheet and a turbine blade.

Abstract: A method for establishing a connection with a guaranteed bandwidth for transmitting data over a logical link that includes a plurality of parallel physical links between first and second endpoints. A link bandwidth is allocated on each of the physical communication links so as to include a predefined safety margin, based on either a failure protection policy, or a measure of fluctuation that occurs in a rate of data transmission over the physical links, or both. A sum of the allocated link bandwidth over the plurality of the parallel physical links is substantially greater than the guaranteed bandwidth of the connection. The data are conveyed over the logical link by distributing the data for transmission among the physical links in accordance with the allocated link bandwidth.
