  • Patent number: 8244521
Abstract: String-oriented web queries are utilized as a tool to examine the fabric of how words, phrases and/or n-grams alternate in a language. This fabric is exploited in order to build up a matrix of semantically equivalent pieces of language. In one embodiment, the Distributional Hypothesis is utilized, along with strategies for confirming synonymy, to systematically build up a picture of what words/phrases can be legitimately substituted for one another.

  • Patent number: 8243713
Abstract: A cellular radiotelephone signal is disclosed of the type that includes a main symmetrical bi-directional channel comprising a main up-link and a main down-link for the low- or medium-speed transmission of signaling and control information and data; and at least one supplementary channel which is assigned solely to the down-link and which is intended for high-speed data transmission using a multi-carrier technique, which ensures that the data are distributed over frequency/time space and which is structured in the form of pre-defined entities. Each entity contains a pre-determined number of symbols. At least one symbol from each entity of the supplementary channel includes a position identifier, which can be used to identify the position of the symbol within the entity, such that a terminal can read the symbol position identifier and deduce therefrom the start of the next entity, thereby obtaining synchronisation at the relevant entity of the supplementary channel.

  • Patent number: 8237110
Abstract: Disclosed is an ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) detection method using dopants. The ion mobility spectrometer comprises a sample feeding device, a drift tube and a gas passage system communicated therewith. The gas passage system comprises a pump, a filtering device, a gas inlet and a gas outlet provided on the drift tube for providing clean gas used as the drift gas and the sample carrier gas. The detection method comprises: providing a sampling substrate for sample collection; combining the dopants with the sampling substrate; collecting the sample using the sampling substrate combined with the dopants; and introducing the sampling substrate that has collected the sample into the sample feeding port of the ion mobility spectrometer for detection. With this method, it is unnecessary to provide an independent dopant gas passage, thereby simplifying the structure of the instrument and meanwhile, making it easier and more accurate to control the amount of the dopants required for detection.

  • Patent number: 8239185
Abstract: The present invention is a method and apparatus for facilitating an interview where the interviewer and interviewee speak different languages. An important application is to first responder situations during an emergency. The invention implements several improvements over the prior art. A method is provided whereby the interviewee who cannot read can nevertheless specify her language to the interviewer and system. Choices of topics about which the interviewer might want to communicate with the interviewee are ranked by associated probabilities or risks, thereby assisting the interviewer in selecting next steps in the interview and treatment process; the interviewer, nevertheless, retains the discretion to choose other options. Information communicated to the interviewee in detail can be presented to the interviewer in summary form, so that the interviewer can concentrate on higher priority matters.
