  • Patent number: 5606511
Abstract: A microcontroller device is fabricated in a semiconductor integrated circuit chip to control an external system with which the device is to be installed in circuit. The device has a CPU, a program memory for storing program instructions to be implemented by the CPU, a data memory for storing data including data pertaining to parameters of the external system to be controlled by operation of the CPU according to the instructions, and various peripherals. A brown-out protection circuit monitors the level of the supply voltage for the IC chip relative to a ground reference level, to reset the device as protection against its malfunction in response to reduction of an arithmetic difference between the supply voltage level and the ground reference level to a value less than a predetermined threshold operating voltage level. Reset defines a cessation of operation of the device while maintaining status quo of implementation of program instructions by the CPU and data stored in the data memory.

  • Patent number: 5602936
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for recapturing data from scanning devices and storing the captured data in digital form using a method that allows for easy, fast and reliable access for viewing, printing, transmitting, et cetera. More specifically, the method of the present invention allows institutions such as banks to "touch" data that has been captured using high speed reader/sorter devices. The invention interacts with such devices to store scanned digital images to storage devices using a hierarchical storage management module in order to migrate less accessed images to more cost effective storage media, such as optical disk and/or tape. Users access copies of the scanned items using an application that queries a database that holds pointers to the actual location of the physical digital image. The location of the scanned image is transparent to the end-user.

  • Patent number: 5598649
Abstract: A laundry mangle has at least one mangling roller held in a working position inside a heatable trough by at least one carrying arm. The mangle roller and the trough are held in relative moveable positions by at least one adjusting member, delimiting together the inlet and outlet sides of a passage for laundry pieces. The adjusting member allows a force to be exerted on the mangling roller and/or trough that counteracts the frictional force generated during operation of the mangle, so that a constant or increasing ironing pressure towards the outlet side is set. The frictional force (R) generated during mangling is thus compensated, so that a gentle, wear-free mangling process is achieved. In addition, the mangling capacity is increased, compared with known mangles.

  • Patent number: 5596271
Abstract: A method and sensor for sensing the rate of rotation of a fan in order to monitor and detect a variation in the rate of air flowing through the fan, such as to indicate a restriction in the air flow path or failure of the fan. A Hall-effect transistor (HET) is placed in the fixed field of a magnet adjacent the path of a preferably ferrous moving element capable of changing the magnetic field coupled to the HET. As the ferrous element passes the magnet and HET, the strength or alignment of the field changes sufficiently to produce an output pulse from the HET. The pulse rate decreases with slowing of the fan such as may occur with a restriction or blockage in the air flow path.

  • Patent number: 5594293
Abstract: Electroacoustic converter for transformation between thermal and electrical energy, comprising working chamber filled with working medium, piezoelectric transducer, acoustic filter and source of gaseous substance to be supplied into working chamber under pressure.Combustion of gaseous substance causes its pulsation accompanied by emitting acoustic waves, which being transmitted via working medium to said transducer are converted into electrical signals. The signals can be released from the electrical terminals of transducer. The same device can function in opposite direction in the sense that it converts the supplied to transducer electrical energy into acoustical waves which being emitted by the transducer are transferred through the working medium to the gaseous stream. This process is accompanied by adiabatic heating and cooling of the stream and thus transferring of electrical energy into heat energy takes place while converter operates as a heat machine.

  • Patent number: 5594894
Abstract: A microcontroller device is fabricated in a semiconductor integrated circuit chip for controlling an external system with which the microcontroller device is to be installed in circuit. The device includes a CPU, a program memory, a data memory, and peripherals for use in controlling the external system. An on-chip peripheral timing module establishes the timing of and degree of control exercised over the external system by a generating a repetitive event configured as a pulse waveform. The timing module is adapted for selectively setting the period of the pulse waveform to designate the frequency of occurrence of the repetitive event for the timing of control and to provoke a corresponding periodic interrupt of the CPU. The width of the pulse in each period of the pulse waveform is selectively modulated to set the degree of control. The timing module selectively varies the frequency of periodic interrupts of the CPU without affecting the period of the pulse waveform.

  • Patent number: 5592314
Abstract: A tunable wavelength filter is independent of the polarization. The filter includes first and second liquid crystal layers. Each liquid crystal layer includes two opposing glass substrates on which transparent electrodes, dielectric mirrors and alignment layers are coated in this order, respectively, and a liquid crystal interposed between the opposing alignment layers. In the first liquid crystal layer, the molecule alignment of the liquid crystal is twisted by n.pi./2 radian to one twisting direction where n is a positive uneven number. In the second liquid crystal layer, the molecule alignment of the liquid crystal is twisted by -n.pi./2 radian to the twisting direction. The first and second crystal layers are laid to overlap each other so that an axis of liquid crystal molecules on the emission side of the first liquid layer is perpendicular to an axis of liquid crystal molecules on the incidence side of the second liquid crystal layer.

  • Patent number: 5588875
Abstract: A connector comprises a connector housing (20) formed with a terminal accommodating chamber (21) and a lance (24); and a terminal (30, 40, 50) inserted into the terminal accommodating chamber of the connector housing and engaged with the lance for prevention of removal of the terminal from the connector housing. In particular, knurled portions (26, 37, 47, 55) are formed both in the lance and the terminal, respectively to prevent the terminal inserted into the terminal accommodating chamber from being moved within the connector housing. When the terminal is inserted into the connector housing, as far as the terminal is not e gaged with the lance, the terminal can be moved within the connector housing for positional adjustment between the two. However, after the terminal has been engaged with the lance, the terminal can be fixed to the connector housing firmly by the presence of the knurled portions.

  • Patent number: 5587556
Abstract: A protective cover for accommodating an end connecting part of a bundle of wires includes a box-type of casing body provided with a storage chamber to accommodate the end connecting part therein and a lid pivotably connected to the casing body to close the opened upper portion thereof. A bottom wall of the casing body is provided with a stop in the shape of a rectangular plate. With the arrangement, when accommodating the ends of the wires in the casing, the stop intrudes into the wires. Under this condition, even if the wires are pulled outside the casing, the end connecting part of the wires is hooked by the stop, whereby the wires can be retained in the casing without being drawn therefrom.
