Abstract: An anti-wear compression ignition fuel for use in diesel engines comprising (1) a monohydroxy alkanol having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, and (2) a wear inhibiting amount of a C.sub.8 to C.sub.20 aliphatic monocarboxylic acid. Optionally, said fuel composition may also contain an ignition accelerator such as an organic nitrate.

Optionally, said fuel composition may also contain an ignition accelerator such as an organic nitrate.It has recently been disclosed in Brazilian Patent Application No. P17700392 that alcohols, such as methanol and ethanol, can be substituted for conventional petroleum derived diesel fuels for burning in diesel engines, when used in combination with an ignition accelerator, such as ethyl nitrate or nitrite. Reportedly, the addition of alkyl nitrate or nitrite accelerators to the alcohol achieves a level of auto-ignition sufficient to operate in diesel engines.

Abstract: A process for improving the purity of phosphonitrilic chloride polymers, namely the trimer and tetramer by (1) contacting a solution of open-chain phosphonitrilic chloride oligomers admixed with cyclic oligomers of phosphonitrilic chloride in a normally liquid hydrocarbon with aqueous lower alkylnitrile, (2) separating the liquid hydrocarbon phase laden with trimer and some tetramer from the aqueous phase thereby produced, and (3) recovering highly purified cyclic trimer and tetramer from the hydrocarbon phase.

Abstract: A process is described for the production of predominately linear and alpha-branched acetals by reacting a C.sub.3 or higher alpha or internal olefin, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and a C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkanol using a cobalt catalyst in the presence of a promoter which is a quaternary ammonium salt such as N-benzyl,N,N,N-trimethylammonium methoxide. When a quaternary ammonium salt is used, an increase in the rate of reaction is effected.

Abstract: An ignition spark advance system for use with spark ignited internal combustion engines having an exhaust gas recycle system which includes EGR vacuum modulator means connected to and modulating an exhaust gas recycle valve. A conventional first vacuum actuated spark advance unit responsive to manifold vacuum signal cooperates with a second vacuum actuated spark advance unit responsive to EGR vacuum signal to advance the ignition spark. The second vacuum actuated spark advance unit provides additional spark advance during periods of lower intake manifold vacuum caused by exhaust gas recycle when the spark advance due to the first unit decreases.

Abstract: Fuel induction systems of internal combustion engines are cleansed by operating the engine on a gasoline containing a detergent amount of the condensation product of phenol, and preferably a high molecular weight alkylphenol, an aldehyde, and an amine having a H--N< group. Effectiveness is improved, especially when using a large amount of the detergent composition or when using the detergent composition with water intolerant gasolines, by inclusion of a demulsifier containing an aryl sulfonate, a polyether glycol, and an oxyalkylated phenol formaldehyde resin.The concentrates of this invention also include one or more alcohols of about 4 to about 10 carbon atoms, an aromatic solvent, and a corrosion inhibitor.This invention also comprises gasolines containing these concentrates; the concentrate being present in a small amount that confers carburetor detergency properties to the gasoline.
Abstract: A process for selectively converting a gaseous mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen to methane, which comprises contacting the gases with a catalyst at elevated temperature. The catalyst consists essentially of alkali metal, activated carbon and at least one halide of a transition metal selected from Group VIII of the Periodic Table. This catalyst has good activity at temperatures between about 250.degree. C. and about 350.degree. C.
