Patent number: 4460308Abstract: A system for loading coal or other particles into railroad cars wherein every other railroad car is designated an EVEN railroad car and the remaining every other railroad cars are designated ODD railroad cars. Each EVEN railroad car is weighed after being filled with coal and before the initiation of the loading of coal into the next EVEN railroad car to determine a filled weight. The filled weight of each EVEN railroad car is compared to a predetermined control weight and, in response to this determination, the termination of the loading of coal into the next EVEN railroad car controllably is varied to bring the filled weight closer to control weight. In a like manner, each ODD railroad car is weighed after being filled with coal and before the initiation of the loading of coal into the next ODD railroad car to determine a filled weight.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 1982Date of Patent: July 17, 1984Assignee: Kerr-McGee Coal CorporationInventors: Jack L. Patent number: 4427640Abstract: A process for preferentially extracting and recovering vanadium and uranium from wet process acids. The wet process acid first is contacted with a neutral organo-phosphorus compound to extract the vanadium values. The resulting loaded organic phase is separated from the wet process acid due to immiscibility of the acid and organic phases. The vanadium values then are separated from the organic phase by stripping. The raffinate separated from the first organic extractant then is contacted with a second organic extractant comprising a dialkylphosphoric acid and a neutral organo-phosphorus compound to extract the uranium values. The resulting loaded organic phase is separated from the wet process acid due to immiscibility of the acid and organic phases. The organic phase is stripped with a reductive stripping solution and the stripping solution then is oxidized to convert the uranium values to the hexavalent oxidation state.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1980Date of Patent: January 24, 1984Assignee: Kerr-McGee Chemical CorporationInventors: P. Patent number: 4415442Abstract: A process for the prevention of the deposition of entrained soluble coal products from vaporous solvent recovered from a heavy fraction comprising insoluble coal products and some solvent and soluble coal products. The heavy fraction is produced in a coal deashing system employing solvent at elevated temperatures and pressures near the critical conditions of the solvent. The heavy fraction is reduced in pressure to form a mixture of ash concentrate and vaporous solvent together with entrained soluble coal products. This mixture then is turbulently admixed for at least 0.05 seconds to coalesce or condense the entrained soluble coal products upon the ash concentrate particles. The coalescence or condensation of at least a portion of the soluble coal products substantially prevents or minimizes deposition of the same in the solvent withdrawal conduit of subsequent vapor-solid separation apparatus. Alternatively, the mixture is introduced into a fluidized bed of ash concentrate.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 1981Date of Patent: November 15, 1983Assignee: Kerr-McGee CorporationInventor: Donald E. Patent number: 4405437Abstract: A process for liquefying coal utilizing an indigenously derived solvent enriched in basic nitrogen heterocyclic compounds. Particulate coal is slurried with an aromatic hydrocarbon distillate start-up solvent. The slurry is reacted under predetermined conditions in a liquefaction reactor to form distillable and substantially nondistillable coal products. The distillables are removed and the nondistillable coal products are fractionated to produce a fraction enriched in basic nitrogen heterocyclic compounds. A portion of this fraction is recycled together with the distillable solvent to the coal liquefaction reactor. The blended solvent is slurried with coal and upon treatment in the liquefaction reactor converts the coal to distillate and soluble coal products in a higher yield than possible in a process not employing a solvent enriched in basic nitrogen heterocyclic compounds.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 1982Date of Patent: September 20, 1983Assignee: Electric Power Research InstituteInventors: Conrad J. Kulik, Linda Atherton

Patent number: 4405464Abstract: A process for reducing the concentration of selenium ions in the Se(VI) oxidation state in an aqueous solution. The aqueous solution is admixed with a quantity of metallic iron. The iron reduces the selenium ions from the Se(VI) oxidation state to a lower oxidation state and then dissolves in the aqueous solution. If the pH level of the aqueous solution is above about 2.3, the selenium ions are reduced to at least the Se(IV) oxidation state and the dissolved metallic iron hydrolyses to form an iron hydroxide that precipitates. The precipitated material is separated from the aqueous solution to provide a solution having a lower concentration of selenium ions. If the pH level of the aqueous solution is below about 2.3, no iron hydrolysis is observed to occur. At least a portion of the selenium in the Se(VI) oxidation state is believed to be reduced to the elemental state. The elemental selenium then is separated from the aqueous solution to provide a solution having a lower concentration of selenium ions.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1981Date of Patent: September 20, 1983Assignee: Kerr-McGee Nuclear CorporationInventors: Roger A. Patent number: 4402919Abstract: A process for solubilizing uranium and other values in an ore containing the same together with aluminum and phosphorus and effecting regeneration of a mineral acid employed to solubilize the ore. The regeneration is effected by heating the spent acid solution resulting from solubilization of the ore in a reaction zone to a temperature above 100.degree. C. while maintaining at least the autogenic pressure of the heated solution within the reaction zone. The treatment causes aluminum phosphate to precipitate from the solution while simultaneously causing regeneration of at least a portion of the mineral acid in the solution that was consumed to originally solubilize the ore. The dissolved uranium and other elements of value can be recovered from the solution, either before or after acid regeneration, by any known technique. The regenerated mineral acid then can be used to solubilize fresh ore.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 1981Date of Patent: September 6, 1983Assignee: Kerr-McGee CorporationInventors: Dale Denham, Roland Schmidt

Patent number: 4396488Abstract: A process for producing a superior coal liquefaction solvent. A particulate coal is admixed with a distillable aromatic hydrocarbon solvent and liquefied under predetermined conditions to form coal liquefaction products comprising distillable and substantially nondistillable soluble coal products and insoluble coal products. The distillable solvent and distillable soluble coal products are separated from the remaining liquefaction products. The remainder is admixed with a deashing solvent and separated under elevated temperature and pressure conditions in several separation zones into an insoluble coal products fraction, a light soluble coal products fraction and a heavy soluble coal products fraction. A portion of the light soluble coal products fraction is admixed with the recovered distillable solvent to form the coal liquefaction solvent. The light soluble coal products comprise at least about 15 percent and preferably 25 to 50 percent of the coal liquefaction solvent.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 1981Date of Patent: August 2, 1983Assignee: Electric Power Research Institute, Inc.Inventors: Howard E. The products of the vis-breaking operation comprise distillable and substantially nondistillable liquid products in association with a residue including organometallic compounds. The distillable and substantially nondistillable liquid products then are separated from the residue. The distillable products can be separated by distillation. The nondistillable products are separated from the residue employing a second solvent maintained under elevated temperature and pressure conditions and then recovered as a liquid phase product.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 1981Date of Patent: June 21, 1983Assignee: Kerr-McGee Refining CorporationInventors: Leo Garwin, Roger A.
