  • Patent number: 6204033
Abstract: Spherically shaped polyvinyl alcohol (PVAL) polymer particles are prepared encapsulating a magnetic colloid that provides the particles with magnetic properties for use in binding biomolecules. The particles have a size of 1-10 &mgr;m that makes them particularly suitable for use in cell separation/sorting, cleaning biosubstances in suspension and diagnostic assays. The particles are prepared by dispersing a magnetic colloid containing a magnetic material such as a ferromagnetic or superparamagnetic substance in an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol containing reactive hydroxyl groups, adding the resultant mixture to an organic phase containing a mixture of at least two emulsifiers, and adding a water-soluble cross-linking agent such as a dialdehyde that reacts with the hydroxyl groups of polyvinyl alcohol to form the polymer particles. The emulsifiers are miscible in the polyvinyl alcohol solution, and at least one emulsifier is semi-hydrophilic and at least one emulsifier is lipophilic.

  • Patent number: 6200678
Abstract: Concrete strengthening members, particularly prestressing tendons such as strands of steel wire, are provided with a strongly adherent plastic coating which may be substantially impermeable for improved corrosion resistance, and/or which may have embedded therein abrasive or grit-form particles to provide improved bond with the concrete, and particularly to provide controllable bond transfer in prestressing tendons of the pre-tensioned type. The plastic coating preferably is applied electrostatically in powder form, and fusion bonded by heat. The abrasive can be applied by spraying during a viscous state of the heated resin, and can be varied as to size and spacing density so as to control the surface condition and the bonding effect. Fusion and curing heat may come from preheating of the member before application of the resin powder, which preferably is a heat curable, thermosetting epoxy. Coating thickness and grit application are readily variable to meet particular requirements.

  • Patent number: 6198224
Abstract: A device for the production of microwave plasmas with a microwave generator 1 and its coupling system to a waveguide resonator 5 which encloses a plasma chamber 7 is proposed, the short side of the cross-section of the resonator 5 lying parallel, facing the z axis, in the common wall with the chamber 7, and the microwave power being coupled from the resonator 5 into the chamber 7 via coupling points 6 in this short cross-sectional side. The coupling points are preferably formed as azimuthal slot couplers in the common wall of 5 and 7. The reference numbers relate to FIG. 1.

  • Patent number: 6196570
Abstract: That end of a ski boot which is retained by the boot-retaining unit is retained such that it can be disengaged in the sideways direction and vertical direction. Upon sideways movement of the ski boot within a range of elasticity of the boot-retaining unit, the ski boot is rendered capable of moving increasingly in the upward direction, strong forces in the upward direction producing a force component which additionally forces the boot-retaining unit in the sideways direction.

  • Patent number: 6189469
Abstract: A strip matter cutting device for sewing machine is provided which is mainly employed in automatically cutting a tape or rubber sewed on the shoulders of a T-shirt. It is arranged such that the whole of a cutting part which comprises a rotary cutting blade and a tape receiving portion integrally formed with a tape pick-up portion, is shifted between a cutting action position closely adjacent to the rear of a needle location of a throat plate secured to the top surface of a sewing machine bed, and a non-action position at which the cutting part is retracted upward to the left of a sewing machine arm over the throat plate, through a rock arm which is driven to rock reciprocally by a rotary cylinder. Employment of this arrangement permits an improvement in work efficiency and a significant reduction in work burden. Even for a wide object to be sewed, it is fed freely for automatic cutting of a sewed tape or rubber, without the tape or rubber losses.

  • Patent number: 6179193
Abstract: An impelling blade guide is inserted into a space provided for inserting a blade unit in order to create a simple structure for the removal of staples which have become jammed in the staple ejecting mouth during empty operation. A notched section is formed in proximity to the staple ejecting mouth of the frame. During normal operation, the impelling blade guide can be easily raised since an indentation formed on the notched section and a projection formed on the impelling blade guide are fixed. When a staple is jammed in the staple ejecting mouth, the impelling blade guide is pulled up and the projection separates from the indentation. Thus the rear surface side of the staple ejecting mouth is opened. In such a way, jammed staples can be easily removed from the staple ejecting mouth.

  • Patent number: 6176835
Abstract: This invention relates to a method of performing accurate biopsies, particularly core breast biopsies, and a device for facilitating the accuracy of the taking of biopsies. The device involves the provision of guiding members or wing-type projections on at least two sides of the barrel of a biopsy gun. Each guiding member is parallel to the axis of a biopsy needle attached to the gun and there are at least two guiding members projecting from the barrel of the gun substantially perpendicular to one another. Each guiding member is preferably in line with the needle, so that in use the biopsy needle is in the plane of each guiding member. The device may be in the form of a biopsy gun with the guiding members integrally formed or affixed, or it may be in the form of an attachment for attaching to a conventional biopsy gun.

  • Patent number: 6161502
Abstract: Transducers are acted upon by milk flowing respectively from each teat of the animal into a milking claw which has an upper chamber and a lower chamber. The transducers respond to a condition of the milk and a processor controls valves. If the transducer indicates normal milk, the valve is set to direct flow into the lower chamber from which it passes via a pipe to a collection tank. If abnormal milk is indicated, the valve is set to direct flow into the upper chamber from which it passes via a discharge pipe to a dump container or drain. The transducers, the control valves and preferably also the processor are housed within the milking claw.
