Abstract: Disclosed is a method of moderating the catalyst activation characteristics of an alkyl aluminum compound by the use of hydrocarbon substituted acetylene. Preferred compounds are phenylacetylene, hexyne-1-and hexyne-2.
Abstract: A metathesis catalyst activator composition consisting essentially of an alkoxyalkylaluminum halide and a tin compound in a molar ratio of about 0.15 to 2 moles of the alkoxyalkylaluminum halide per mole of tin compound.
Abstract: Flame retardance of polymers prepared by metathesis polymerization of cycloolefins is improved by treatment of molded articles with a halogenated hydrocarbon capable of entering into radical chain transfer reactions with the carbon-carbon unsaturation present in the polymer recurring unit.
Abstract: A cross-linked copolymer containing repeating units derived from a mixture comprising the following monomers: ##STR1## and occasionally other repeating units derived from other metathesis polymerizable cyclic compounds such as dicyclopentadiene, a process for producing the copolymer, a process for producing a molded article from the copolymer and a polymerizable composition therefor.
Abstract: A process for producing a molded article by introducing a reactive liquid mixture which comprises a cycloalkene containing dicyclopentadiene, a norbornene-type monomer containing at least one N-substituted 5-membered cyclic imide group and a metathesis polymerization catalyst system and which has moderated metathesis polymerizability into a mold in which the liquid mixture is metathesis polymerized, and a multi-part polymerizable composition for producing the molded article.
Abstract: A method for improving the properties of a metathesis polymerized cycloolefin article by treating with molecular halogen in an organic solvent. Degree of treatment can be regulated according to the swelling power of the solvent for the polymer. Improved properties include improved flame retardance, oxidation resistance and surface properties.
Abstract: A method is disclosed for preparing filled shaped articles of metathesis polymerized poly(cycloolefins) wherein an inorganic filler material is treated with a norbornene-substituted silane coupling agent. The norbornene moiety copolymerizes with the metathesis polymerizable monomer and the silane moiety creates a bond with the filler. Products are characterized by improved physical properties.

Degree of treatment can be regulated according to the swelling power of the solvent for the polymer. Improved properties include improved flame retardance, oxidation resistance and surface properties.
Abstract: An elastic crosslinked metathesis polymer composition is disclosed comprised of a copolymer of a norbornene-type compound which metathesis polymerizes to a linear polymer and a norbornene-type compound having a second double bond of similar reactivity which forms a crosslinked polymer, and a hydrocarbon-based extending oil. Norbornene and dicyclopentadiene are typical comonomers. Polymerization is carried out by a RIM or resin injection molding process.
Abstract: A process is disclosed for preparing a blend of a metathesis polymer and a radical polymer wherein a norbornene polymer is metathesis polymerized in the presence of a vinyl compound having two double bonds in conjugated relationship. Also included in the system is a compound capable of being reduced to a radical by the reduced valence transition metal element which serves as the catalyst of the metathesis polymerization. Examples of such compounds are specific chlorinated organic and chlorinated inorganic compounds.
