Abstract: Novel tricyclic 1,3-dioxanes based on the skeleton of 1,1-dimethyloctalin or 1,1-dimethyldecalin and their use as perfume components is disclosed.

Abstract: A novel technique for the preparation of 4-hydroxy-5-alkyl-3-oxo-2H-furans is disclosed wherein the reaction product of an alpha-alkyl diglycolic acid diester and an oxalic acid diester is cyclized, hydrolyzed and decarboxylated. Alternatively, the corresponding 2,5-dialkyl product can be prepared by an intermediate alkylation step.

Abstract: Viscosity of hydroxyalkyl cellulose solutions is increased by treatment with benzoquinone under controlled conditions of pH.

Abstract: Alpha, beta-dialkyl conjugated nitriles are disclosed which have interesting perfumistic qualities. These materials have the general structural formula ##STR1## where R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of about 1 to 15 carbon atoms having no unsaturation in conjugated relationship with either the nitrile unsaturation or the alpha, beta-olefinic unsaturation, and R' and R" are the same or different aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals meeting the description of R, or R' and R", taken together, form a cycloaliphatic radical having about 6 to 15 carbon atoms. They are produced by the reaction of the appropriate aliphatic nitrile and ketone under the influence of a basic catalyst.

Abstract: Novel cyclohexene-3 nitriles are disclosed as perfumery ingredients.

Abstract: Coated bottles are disclosed having a coating comprised of an elastomeric blend of polypropylene with a hydrocarbon elastomer. The coating is adhered loosely to the bottle so that, upon rupture of the glass, it forms an envelope to contain glass fragments.

Abstract: Pourable salad dressing compositions are disclosed containing a mixture of Xanthan gum and pectin as a stabilizer.

These compounds have the general formula ##STR1## where X can be, under specified conditions, --CH.sub.2 --, oxygen, or sulfur, Y can be oxygen or sulfur and R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 are hydrogen or 1 to 3 carbon alkyl groups.

Abstract: Dihydroxypropyl ethers of cellulose are disclosed which are characterized by having a dihydroxypropyl M.S. of at least about 1.4 which are water-soluble and thermoplastic. These materials form complexes with borate and antimonate ions having unique and useful properties.

Abstract: Perfumed composites of ethylene and polar monomer copolymers, such as vinyl acetate and ethyl acrylate, are disclosed. Shaped bodies prepared from such composites faithfully retain the fragrance of the perfume oil for periods up to a year and more.
