  • Patent number: 6252740
Abstract: A cartridge for a magnetic disk drive has a rigid shell and a flexible door which covers an opening through which read/write heads engage the recording medium. The flexible door is guided outside of the shell to an open position as the cartridge is inserted into the drive. A projection on a flexible arm in the drive catches a hole in the flexible door to open it as the cartridge is inserted into the drive. The door along the outside of the cartridge conserves space so that the recording medium can be large for a given form factor drive.

  • Patent number: 6252403
Abstract: A spiral coil design can reduce or eliminate inhomogeneities caused by finite wavelength effects at high magnetic field strength. The spiral radio frequency coil has a center axis and angled conductors in a spiral geometry about the center axis, where the phase of current within the conductors varies with axial distance along the center axis of the coil and rotation of the conductors as a function of axial distance along the center axis leads to a phase rotation of a radio frequency field generated by the radio frequency coil when current is applied to the conductors. The amount of phase rotation is determined by the tightness of the spiral of the conductors.

  • Patent number: 6249719
Abstract: A Voltage Instability Predictor (VIP) estimates the proximity of a power system to voltage collapse in real time. The VIP can be implemented in a microprocessor-based relay whose settings are changed adaptively to reflect system changes. Only local measurements (voltage and current) at the bus terminal are required. The VIP detects the proximity to collapse by monitoring the relationship between the apparent impedance {overscore (Z)}app and the Thévenin-impedance. In addition, we disclose: (1) that the VIP may be used in connection with non-radial topologies; (2) a new, more robust method to track voltage collapse in terms of impedance using rolling sums; and (3) a new method for representing distance to voltage collapse in terms of power margins.

  • Patent number: 6249792
Abstract: An on-line dynamic shrink facility sets an allocation fence in a file and moves data from above the fence to below the fence. The fence is based on a target size for the file. When all the data above the fence is moved below the fence, the space above the fence is freed. The target size can be a specified size, an original size for the file when it was created, or a size calculated by examining the amount of space used and adding in an amount of desired free space. Resources that are required to move the data, such as old and new allocation units for the data, or that will be impacted by movement of the data, such as index entries, are locked or latched to prevent corruption of the data while it is being moved. The operations are performed in discreet transactions which are immediately committed to minimize the impact on other users of the file.

  • Patent number: 6247902
Abstract: A mechanism for attenuating torsional vibration in a compressor is described. The compressor includes a swash plate secured to a drive shaft and pistons coupled to the swash plate. Compression of refrigerant gas by the pistons generates torsional vibrations of the drive shaft. The rear end of the drive shaft is coupled to a damper for attenuating torsional vibrations. The damper includes a frictional plate secured to the rear end of the drive shaft, a weight rotatably fitted about the drive shaft, and a coil spring. The coil spring elastically presses the weight against the frictional plate and elastically couples the weight with the drive shaft. When the drive shaft torsionally vibrates, the weight contacts the frictional plate and is vibrated about the axis of the drive shaft by the coil spring. As a result, energy of the torsional vibrations is consumed and the vibrations are attenuated. Further embodiments show similar dampers attached to the exterior of the compressor.

  • Patent number: 6244835
Abstract: A blood pump preferably has a magnetically suspended rotor that rotates within a housing. The rotor may rotate about a stator disposed within the housing. Radial magnetic bearings may be defined within the stator and the rotor in order to suspend the rotor. The radial magnetic bearings may be passive magnetic bearings that include permanent magnets disposed within the stator and the rotor or active magnetic bearings. The pump may further include an axial magnetic bearing that may be either a passive or an active magnetic bearing. A motor that drives the rotor may be disposed within the housing in order to more easily dissipate heat generated by the motor. A primary flow path is defined between the rotor and the stator, and a secondary flow path is defined between the stator and the rotor. Preferably, a substantial majority of blood passes through the primary flow path.

  • Patent number: 6242592
Abstract: Processes for preparing 2′-O-alkylated guanosine, uridine, cytidine, and 2,6-diaminopurine 3′-O-phosphoramidites include the steps of alkylating nucleoside precursors, adding suitable blocking groups and phosphitylating. For the guanosine 2′-O-alkylated 3′-O-phosphoramidites, alkylation is effected on 2,6-diamino-9-(&bgr;-D-ribofuranosyl) purine followed by deamination. For uridine 2′-O-alkylated 3′-O-phosphoramidites, alkylation is effect on a dialkyl stannylene derivative of uridine. For cytidine 2′-O-alkylated 3′-O-phosphoramidites, alkylation is effected directly on cytidine. Alkylation is effected directly upon 2,6-diaminopurine.

  • Patent number: 6240760
Abstract: A system for performing sequential operations on a can body, such as necking the open end of the can body, in which two or more machines, such as die necking machines are, are coupled by a transfer module. The transfer module comprises a multi-pocket wheel that receives can bodies from a multi-pocket discharge wheel of the first necking machine and discharges them to a multi-pocket input wheel of the second die necking machine. The drive motor of one of the necking machines is eliminated, while the drive motor on the other machine is enlarged. A gear on the transfer module couples the gear trains on the first and second necking machines into a common gear train. Thus, the transfer module gear train transfers power from the necking machine having the enlarged drive motor to the necking machine for which the drive motor was eliminated. This enables a single drive motor to entire drive train for both machines.

  • Patent number: RE37265
Abstract: A connector device includes a housing having a slide plate with a handle. By the manual operation of the handle, the slide plate is moved by a disengageable link mechanism along the length of the housing. When a data storage medium is fully inserted in the connector device and the handle is in a first position, the link mechanism is disengaged. The link mechanism becomes engaged, and thereby operable to move the slide plate, only after the handle is moved from the first position to an extended position. In this manner, inadvertent ejection of the data storage medium is prevented.
