  • Patent number: 6277982
Abstract: Methods for the alkylation of alcohols, amines and thiols by the use of cyclic sulfates are disclosed. The alkylated sulfates formed are versatile intermediates which may be further elaborated by methods of the invention. In particular, methods for the alkylation of the 2′, 3′ or 5′-hydroxy position of nucleosides and nucleoside analogs with cyclic sulfates to form the 2′, 3′ or 5′-O-alkyl sulfate modified compounds are disclosed. Displacement of the 2′,3′ or 5′-O-sulfate with a nucleophile provides 2′, 3′ or 5′-O-modified nucleosides and nucleoside analogs useful for the synthesis of oligomeric compounds having improved hybridization affinity and nuclease resistance.

  • Patent number: 6278575
Abstract: A system provides for mounting a removable media disk cartridge in a disk drive without translating the cartridge or spindle motor in a Z-axis relative to each other. The system comprises a spindle in the drive having a substantially planar top surface with an annular groove disposed and an datum ring disposed thereon. The annular groove accepts an inner ring surface of a media disk hub. The disk cartridge has a hub with an inner ring that engages the annular groove in the spindle. Additionally the hub has an outer peripheral edge that has an angled surface. During disengagement of the hub from the spindle, the hub is tilted when the cartridge shell engages the outer peripheral edge. The datum ring acts as a fulcrum while the inner ring is tilted out of the annular groove.

  • Patent number: 6276209
Abstract: A system and method of detecting anomalies and/or grain variations in a wooden member. At least one ultrasonic transmitter applies an ultrasound waveform into a surface of a wooden member so as to generate a multiplicity of ultrasonic waves including, e.g., longitudinal and shear ultrasonic waves. These ultrasonic waves are measured after propagation through the wooden member by at least one ultrasonic receiver disposed on the same surface of the wooden member. At least one ultrasonic receiver may also be placed opposite the ultrasonic transmitter so as to detect radial transmission of the longitudinal ultrasonic wave at a point across from the wooden member. The received ultrasonic waves are processed to determine anomalies and/or grain variations in the wooden member at positions of the wooden member between the ultrasonic transmitter and the ultrasonic receiver(s). The ultrasonic transmitters and receivers may be placed in rollers to facilitate high-speed, in-line processing of wooden members.

  • Patent number: 6276904
Abstract: A maximum inclination setting projection comes into contact with a rotary support in a region closer to a point corresponding to a top dead center than an imaginary two-part dividing plane, thereby establishing a maximum angle of inclination of a cam plate. Thus, a hinge mechanism is not required to support any proportion of a compressive load in the region closer to the point corresponding to the top dead center than the imaginary two-part dividing plane when the cam plate is in its maximum angle of inclination. Bulbous parts of guide pins do not come in contact with halves of cylindrical inside surfaces of guide holes closer to the rotary support, and there is made a clearance between the bulbous part of the guide pin and the guide hole and between the bulbous part of the guide pin and the guide hole, interrupting transmission of the compressive load between them.

  • Patent number: 6274844
Abstract: A process for assembling a disk cartridge is disclosed. The process includes the steps of snapping a top shell half of the disk cartridge over a bottom shell half of the disk cartridge; adjusting the shell halves until the shell halves are in abutment contact with each other at a weld site; and directing an energy beam at the weld site until a portion of the top shell half and a portion of the bottom shell half fuse so that the top shell half is fixed to the bottom shell half. The process is repeated for each of a plurality of weld sites located on the perimeter of the disk cartridge. A process for assembling a disk cartridge is disclosed in which an energy beam is split into a plurality of split energy beams. The plurality of split energy beams are focused on a plurality of weld sites until a portion of the top shell half and a portion of the bottom shell half fuse so that the top shell half is fixed to the bottom shell half.

  • Patent number: 6273863
Abstract: A portable, self-learning adaptive weight bearing monitoring system for personal use during rehabilitation of orthopedic patients with fractures of the lower extremities. The system includes a flexible insole which is worn inside the shoe. The insole includes pressure and/or force sensor that measure the GRF force applied at key bearing points under the foot or other portions of the patient's lower extremity. The sensors are, in turn, connected through an A/D converter to a CPU that is connected so as to drive a stimulator that delivers closed-loop sensory stimulation (electrical, mechanical, and/or audio) as feedback to encourage the patient to load the optimal target weight for the limb for which the weight bearing force is being measured. Accurate real-time monitoring of the weight bearing during physical rehabilitation is also provided, and, through the use of closed-loop sensory stimulation, the patient is given continuous feedback for improving rehabilitation.

  • Patent number: 6273705
Abstract: A blow-pin assembly includes a circular body, a ring member, and a seal assembly. The body and the ring member define a central passage. The seal assembly comprises a seal band. The body and the ring member retain the seal band proximate an outer circumferential surface of the body. A neck portion of a parison is positioned over the outer circumferential surface. Pressurized air is routed through the central passage and into the parison during blow-molding operations. The pressurized air causes the parison to expand into the sides of a surrounding mold, thus forming the parison into a hollow object such as a container. The pressurized air also urges the seal band into the parison neck portion, thereby inhibiting leakage of the pressurized air between the neck portion and the blow-pin assembly.

  • Patent number: 6275183
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for reducing data flow through a signal processing system are disclosed. A method according to the invention includes receiving a set of tags from an input system, where each tag is associated with a pulse and includes a pulse characterization parameter that characterizes the associated pulse. The pulse characterization parameter can be based on, for example, pulse center frequency, duration, or angle of arrival. The method includes identifying a subset of tags from the set of tags, where each tag in the subset includes a predefined value of the pulse characterization parameter. The subset of tags can be identified by histogramming the set of tags based on the pulse characterization parameter. If the number of tags in the subset exceeds a threshold number, then the number of tags from the subset that is forwarded through the system is limited to no more than the threshold number of tags.
