Patent number: 4645178Abstract: Multiple drive paths are provided between the valve plunger and force motor of a direct drive valve and force motor assembly whereby should one of the drive paths fail, the force motor can still be used to drive the valve plunger through another drive path. One of the drive paths consists of a drive shaft having one end drivingly connected to an eccentric on the motor output shaft and the other end connected to the end of the valve plunger remote from the motor output shaft. The drive shaft is desirably provided with an enlarged head portion having a flat annular surface on the axial inner end thereof in close proximity to a corresponding flat end face on the end of the valve plunger closest to the motor output shaft, whereby should the valve plunger break, the drive shaft will hold the valve plunger together and allow for degraded valve performance.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 1985Date of Patent: February 24, 1987Assignee: Pneumo Abex CorporationInventors: Eugene J. Martin, James N. Tootle, Walter Fallows, Howard Lambers, Robert D. Vanderlaan

Patent number: 4637578Abstract: A railroad frog has either a cast or rail-built point, resting on a baseplate which is fastened to ties. A pair of heel rails are attached to the point, to the ties and to traffic rails. A pair of movable wing rails extend from the toe of the frog to a location adjacent the point of the frog. At the frog point an open wing rail forms a flangeway with the point, while the other, closed wing rail cooperates with the point to form a continuous tread surface through the frog. The wing rails are alternately thrown between the open and closed positions by an actuator. A series of stops define the open wing rail position and act to hold down the open wing rail. The wing rails have hinges which allow them to move. The wing rails have a full rail base at the hinges. Adaptor plates allow use of the frog on concrete ties.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 1983Date of Patent: January 20, 1987Assignee: Abex CorporationInventor: Earl E. Frank

Patent number: 4624428Abstract: A railroad spring frog assembly for trackwork installations includes a rigid rail and a flexible spring wing rail. The flexible spring wing rail is rigidly affixed between one end which engages a wing point rail and the other end which connects to a closure rail at the toe end of the frog support means. When a rail car enters the frog and a wheel flange engages the spring wing rail to pass between it and the long point rail the spring wing rail bends away from the long point rail to define a flangeway therebetweeen.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 1984Date of Patent: November 25, 1986Assignee: Abex CorporationInventor: Earl E. Patent number: 4606712Abstract: A positive displacement pump is provided with an impeller drive shaft seal assembly to prevent material in the pumping chamber from reaching an adjacent drive shaft chamber. The seal assembly comprises a rotary seal member mounted on the impeller having an outer surface spaced a non-uniform distance from the inner surface of a member defining the drive shaft chamber so that when the drive shaft is rotated the changing distance between the inner and outer surfaces causes a pumping action to occur so that material is continually pumped around the seal assembly.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 1984Date of Patent: August 19, 1986Assignee: Abex CorporationInventor: Lubomir Vondra

Patent number: 4525994Abstract: This invention relates to a coupling link comprising a first half line and a second half link, each comprising a unitary member with a pair of spaced ears at one end, a tongue at the other end and a central body member which joins the ears and the tongue. Bores in each of the ears of the first and second half links are aligned with a bore formed in the tongue of the opposite half link when the first and second half links are mated to form a coupling link. A link pin is received in the bores formed in the pairs of ears of the two links and in the bore in the tongue of theopposite link. Each link pin is retained in place by a pair of pin keepers each received in a slot formed in one of the ears to close the pin bore in that ear. Each pin keeper includes a tang which projects from one of the slot openings in the ear and is bent out of alignment with the slot opening to retain the keeper within the slot.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1984Date of Patent: July 2, 1985Assignee: Abex CorporationInventors: Mark R. Patent number: 4428552Abstract: A high-speed switch machine for actuating railroad switch points. The machine has an electric motor which drives a hydraulic pump. The pump supplies pressure fluid to a hydraulic cylinder adapted to move the switch points from an initial to a second limit position. A four-way, two-position hydraulic control valve directs fluid to the cylinder such that the cylinder automatically operates in an extension and retraction cycle. The uni-directional motor and two-position control valve minimize response times of the actuating components so that the switch points are thrown in a short time period.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1981Date of Patent: January 31, 1984Assignee: Abex CorporationInventors: Earl E.
