Abstract: A base metal or alloy in the molten state is further alloyed with readily oxidizable elements in an alloying chamber containing a non-oxidizing protective atmosphere, whereupon a plugged hole in the alloying chamber is opened to allow the alloy to flow into a mold cavity also previously filled with a non-oxidizing atmosphere; consequently, the easily oxidized alloy is cast in the absence of atmospheric oxygen.
Abstract: A paddle handle actuated latch mechanism has the paddle handle pivotally mounted within a recess formed in a rectangular tray. A bolt is mounted in a housing attached to the back of the tray. A slide bar mounted in the bolt housing is connected to the bolt and has a portion which projects through an opening in the tray and is engaged by the handle when the handle is actuated. The lock bar is connected to the bolt such that when the paddle handle is moved from a stored position to an operated position, the slide bar moves from a locked position to an unlocked position which moves the bolt from an extended position to a retracted position.

Abstract: A vertical descent rate detector switch has a pair of contacts which are magnetically actuated when the rate of vertical descent of the switch exceeds a set amount.
Abstract: A pair of air-operated hammers for driving railroad spikes are guided by separate yokes, raised and lowered by trunnion-mounted cylinders; a cross frame in a vertical plane is supported between the hammers and clamps join upright guides to the crossframe, the clamps enabling the hammers to be laterally adjusted on a main frame.
Abstract: A proximity sensor includes a housing having one compartment which houses the components of an oscillator control circuit and another compartment which houses a sensing head including a ferrite core and oscillator coil assembly. An end cap closes the open end of the sensing head compartment. A fluid passage is provided in the end cap which permits fluid to flow around the oscillator coil assembly. A relatively thick seal assembly is interposed between the one compartment and the oscillator coil assembly to prevent the passage of fluid into the one compartment.
Abstract: An iron-base, sintered powder metal friction material suitable for railroad braking is disclosed. The friction material comprises, by volume, 10-70% carbon; 0-2.5% sulfur; 0-10% alumina; 1-45% of a metal powder additive selected from the group consisting of copper, manganese, ferrochrome, chrome carbide compounds and mixtures thereof; and the balance iron. In preferred embodiments, the powder metal additives are 11-25% copper, or 9-15% manganese, or 5-20% ferrochrome.
Abstract: A device for measuring and reading out the variation in the distance between the axle bore and the tread of a railroad car wheel at different angular positions on the wheel.
Abstract: A roof support for a partitioned, covered hopper railway car having a longitudinal roof hatch which supports the roof between the end partition and an end wall without interfering with the hatch opening and transfers a portion of the roof load to the side walls of the car.
Abstract: A destroking device for use with a variable displacement hydraulic pump driven by an electric motor, which device automatically reduces the displacement of the pump during start-up of the motor to a value which will ensure that the motor will accelerate to its rated speed and automatically relinquishes control of the pump when the motor reaches its rated running speed.
Abstract: A centrifugal casting high in an easily oxidized element achieved by casting a high melting point metal on to an easily oxidized metal of lower melting point. The desirable distribution of the oxidizable element through the cross section of a casting is achieved relying on the basic effect of centrifugal separation.
Abstract: A speed control circuit has a comparator which compares a voltage signal which is indicative of the actual speed of a shaft with a digital reference which is indicative of the desired speed of the shaft. If the actual speed is different than the desired shaft speed, a bi-directional control mechanism is operated in one direction or the other to adjust the actual speed of the shaft. The operation of the bi-directional control mechanism is periodically interrupted to increment the amount the actual shaft speed is changed to prevent overshoot of the desired speed.
Abstract: A vane motor which uses two-lip vanes has a fluid restrictor in a fluid passage which connects the inner and outer ends of each vane. High pressure fluid is supplied to the inner end of each vane as it traverses the transfer and sealing zone. This fluid flows through the fluid passage to the outer end of the vane to pressure balance the vane. In the event the outer end of a vane is separated from the cam ring the high pressure fluid at the outer end of the vane flows to the low pressure area and a pressure drop is created across the restrictor which results in a force which biases the vane towards the cam ring.
Abstract: Railbound frogs for track work installation and so constructed as to strengthen the heel extension, to resist movement of the running rails away from the heel end of the frog and to prevent damage due to what is known as a "false flange" on the car wheel.
Abstract: A control for the motor of a mechanism which adjusts the position of the distal end of a passenger loading bridge, which control, when actuated, causes the motor to operate and the adjustment mechanism to move the end of the bridge to a preset position.
Abstract: A centrifugal casting of tubular form exhibiting an outer layer of a heavy (high density) metal having a high melting point, an inner layer of a lighter (low density) lower melting point metal and an intermediate zone where the two metals vary continuously and oppositely as to concentration from the inner layer to the outer layer; in the case of a tube these layers are the inner diameter (I.D.) and the outer diameter (O.D.).
Abstract: Hand patching of recesses in the side walls of a sand mold, intended to receive a core, is avoided by filling the recess, after the core is emplaced with a complemental pre-molded cover.
Abstract: A rail lubricator system for applying lubricant to the flange of a railroad car wheel riding on the head of a rail. The system has a lubricant reservoir with pumps therein for supplying lubricant to a delivery assembly attached to a rail. The pumps are mounted on a support which is connected to the reservoir cover. The lubricant delivery assembly clamps to a rail without the need for bolts or bolt holes extending through the rail web.
Abstract: A lift for moving a wheelchair over a stairway includes a ramp, a wheelchair supporting platform and a mechanism for operating the platform over the ramp. When the lift is inoperative, the wheelchair supporting platform can be removed from the ramp and the ramp can be stored such that it does not intrude into the stairway and the operating mechanism is inaccessible.
