  • Patent number: 6675450
Abstract: A method of producing and mounting electronic devices to negate the effects of parasitics on device performance. In one aspect, the substrate surface of the device is coated with a thin, etch-resistant film during fabrication that acts as a barrier to allow removal of substrate material beneath the film, creating a suspended structure upon which the remaining layers of circuitry rest. Alternatively the device is made with a film that is integral to the device, and that acts as the supporting membrane. To mount the device on a carrier or package, solder bumps are applied near the ends of the conductors of the device, and the die is then secured to a carrier or package, and positioned so that leads extending from the conductors mate up with bonding strips on the carrier or package. The solder bumps are then reflowed or melted to establish electrical connection between leads of the device and corresponding bonding strips of the carrier.

  • Patent number: 6674291
Abstract: The effects of electromigration have been shown to lead to damage of metal electrodes of electronic devices such as thin film resonator (TFR) devices in only a few hours, for a test input power that is within the operational range of these devices. It has been determined that this failure is sensitive to the frequency of the input power. The present invention provides a method and apparatus for determining high power reliability in electronic devices, so as to enable an accurate determination of the failure time of the electronic device, and hence projected lifetime. This determination is independent from the frequency of an input power applied to the electronic device as part of the method for testing the device. Based on the above results, a TFR device has been developed, which includes a protective or electromigration-reducing layer such as titanium being deposited atop an electrode of the device.

  • Patent number: 6639710
Abstract: An adaptive optics system is disclosed whereby at least one mirror in the system is manipulated using electrostatic force to selectively attract or repel a portion of the mirror to or from a particular electrode, respectively. This attraction or repulsion is accomplished by mechanically coupling a bound charge layer of dielectric material to at least one surface of the mirror and then placing a voltage across an electrode in an array of electrodes positioned near that mirror. The charge in the dielectric material combined with a suitable electric field makes it possible to attract portions of the mirror in one instant and then, by changing the sign on the voltage placed across the electrode, to repel those same portions in the next instant.

  • Patent number: 6625278
Abstract: An AC impedance matching architecture which provides programmable AC impedance matching in a given range using a digital filter to filter a signal fed back from the impedance matched line to generate an AC impedance emulation control signal. The AC impedance emulation control signal is combined with a transmit signal (if desired) and drives a voltage controlled current source, which is in parallel with a reference impedance. A voltage is developed across the reference impedance to drive, e.g., the telephone line. The reference impedance is chosen based on a desired maximum AC impedance. The gain of the digital filter, a first order sigma delta filter in the disclosed embodiment, is chosen based on the desired value of the AC impedance. The transfer function of the digital filter is derived based on a desired AC impedance.

  • Patent number: 6569690
Abstract: Method for fabricating a structure. According to an exemplary embodiment, a structure is made by forming a layer of removable material with a first surface spaced a part from a second surface. The first surface is formed along a first region from which the material is removable. The first surface is altered by removal of material from the layer. Removed material from the first surface is monitored to detect fluctuations in a variable of composition in the layer, and removal of material from the first surface is terminated when the composition of monitored material meets a predetermined criterion. In an alternate embodiment a variable characteristic is imparted to a layer of material as a function of layer thickness and an operation is performed on the layer resulting in removal of material. Samples of removed material are monitored for variation in the characteristic and the operation is modified when a variation conforms with a criterion.
