Abstract: A filter includes an inlet side, an outlet side, and a body. The body includes a first substrate that includes an array of inlet holes passing through the first substrate, and a second substrate that includes an array of outlet holes passing through the second substrate. The body further includes an intermediate region that includes a plurality of channels extending along a plane that is transverse or at an angle to a main axis of the filter. Each channel communicates directly or indirectly with at least one of the inlet holes and at least one of the outlet holes. The filter provides a plurality of fluid flow paths through the body from the inlet side to the outlet side.

Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure include compositions that make use of phosphorus and/or nucleobase protecting groups which find use in the synthesis of long polynucleotides. Phosphorus protecting groups are provided that help increase the stepwise coupling yield and/or phosphorous protecting groups that can be removed during the oxidation step. Amidine nucleobase protecting groups are provided that find use in the subject compositions and methods which provides for e.g., increased resistance to depurination during polynucleotide synthesis. In some instances, the methods and compositions disclosed herein utilize a combination of the phosphorus and amidine nucleobase protecting groups in the synthesis of polynucleotides having a sequence of 200 or more monomeric units in length. Abstract: A torch for use in analytic instruments includes a tube subassembly with substantially cylindrical nested inner and outer tubes with coincident central axes, the inner tube having a terminus. The torch also includes a removable injector extending at least partially in the inner tube and having an alignment feature, an inlet, an outlet, and a central axis that is coincident with the central axes of the inner and outer tubes, a seal having a channel for accommodating a portion of the injector, and a base for supporting the tube subassembly, injector, and seal. The seal has a complementary feature to engage the alignment feature of the injector to prevent axial misalignment of the injector and maintain a fixed gap between the terminus of the inner tube and the outlet of the injector.
Abstract: The invention relates generally to methods and apparatus that gravitationally transfer cells from a first medium to a second medium. More specifically, the invention relates to a novel microfluidic device. The microfluidic device includes a cell transfer region, a cell settling channel, a waste channel, a cell output channel, and an input medium channel. The cell settling channel, the waste channel, and the cell output channel extend from, are in fluid communication with, and are smaller in cross section than the cell transfer region. The cell output channel is substantially perpendicular to the cell settling channel and to the waste channel. The input medium channel extends from and is in fluid communication with the cell output channel.

Abstract: Particles such as nanoparticles in a sample are analyzed by single-particle inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (spICP-MS). The sample is processed in an ICP-MS system to acquire time scan data corresponding to ion signal intensity versus time. A signal distribution, corresponding to ion signal intensity and the frequency at which the ion signal intensity was measured, is determined from the time scan data. A particle detection threshold is determined as an intersection point of an ionic signal portion and a particle signal portion of the signal distribution. The particle signal portion corresponds to measurements of particles in the sample, and the ionic signal portion corresponds to measurements of components in the sample other than particles. The particle detection threshold separates the particle signal portion from the ionic signal portion, and may be utilized to determine data regarding the particles.

Abstract: An ATR scanner and method for calibrating the same are disclosed. The scanner includes an ATR objective having a reflecting face and an optical port adapted to receive a first light beam, and to focus the first light beam to a point, at a location on the reflecting face such that the first light beam is reflected by the reflecting face and no portion of the first light beam strikes the reflecting face at an angle greater than the critical angle. A detector measures an intensity of light reflected from the reflecting face. A controller controls the location of the focal point and determines an intensity of light that was incident on the reflecting face as a function of the position on the reflecting face and an intensity of light that was reflected from the reflecting face as a function of position on the reflecting face.
Abstract: A method for estimating whether a female is pregnant, said method comprising measuring allele presences (D) for a plurality of genetic markers of at least one chromosome, different from the X and Y chromosome, in a sample of cell-free DNA from a potentially pregnant female; each allele presence representing the presence at a genetic marker of at least one of: a reference allele of maternal or foetal origin, and an alternative allele of maternal or foetal origin; based on said measured allele presences, determining a homozygous fraction (Fho) thereof which is associated with purely homozygous genetic markers; and estimating whether the female is pregnant based on said fraction.
