  • Publication number: 20180059173
Abstract: We disclose a circuit board that hosts at least first and second types of resistance sensors. The resistance of each sensor of the first type tends to increase, and the resistance of each sensor of the second type tends to decrease if the sensor is exposed to an aggressive environment. The circuit board also hosts a control circuit that operates to monitor respective resistances of the various resistance sensors and to process the digital values representing the resistances to estimate the working condition of one or more other electrical circuits located on the circuit board and/or in relatively close proximity to the circuit board in the corresponding equipment cabinet. The control circuit further operates to transmit out an appropriate alarm message if the estimated working condition is deemed unsatisfactory.

  • Publication number: 20180054036
Abstract: An array of optical amplifiers that recycles the unused pump power of some or all constituent amplifiers thereof, thereby beneficially improving pump-power utilization therein compared to that of conventional optical amplifiers. In an example embodiment, different amplifiers of the array can be configured to receive approximately equal pump power and be used to independently amplify different respective optical signals. In various embodiments, the unused pump power can be recycled using one or more optical couplers and/or optical paths that appropriately interconnect different amplifiers of the array. Some embodiments have one or more optical loops configured to operate as a ring laser that regenerates pump light in response to the unused pump power being coupled thereto. Some embodiments provide a spectral gain profile suitable for amplifying WDM signals in at least some of the constituent amplifiers of the array.

  • Patent number: 9900103
Abstract: We disclose a transceiver module having two optical transceivers, each connectable to a different respective optical line, and a pluggable electrical connector that can be mated with a matching electrical connector in a connection slot of the host network device. The transceiver module also has an electrical interface circuit that can transfer data between the optical transceivers and the host network device in a manner that provides a route for transferring data between two optical transceivers without crossing the electrical connectors. This architecture advantageously enables the optical-line rates to not be limited by the electrical data rate of data transfer through the electrical connectors. In some embodiments, the transceiver module is configurable in a manner that can change the optical-line rates of the optical transceivers and/or the electrical data rate. The latter feature enables the transceiver module to be compatible with both older and newer network devices.

  • Patent number: 9894324
Abstract: A method and a system for using compression sensing to provide low data rate transmission and low computational complexity to determine anomalies in video data obtained by a video camera or other motion detection device. The video data is divided into varying sized video blocks based on an anticipated size of objects of interest within the video, and based on a distance between a video camera and the objects of interest. Features are extracted from the video data of each block to detect anomalies if a feature vector is outside of an “allowed range.” By utilizing varying sized video blocks, anomalies are more effectively and efficiently detected in the video data.

  • Patent number: 9888420
Abstract: We disclose various embodiments of methods and apparatus for processing handovers of mobile terminals between base stations of a wireless communication system. An example handover algorithm used for this purpose enables the handover threshold to be increased for some mobile terminals, on a terminal-by-terminal basis, thereby individually expanding the range of the serving cell for each of such terminals. In an example embodiment, the handover-threshold determination is carried out based on physical-resource-block usage of the target cell. The extent of the cell-range expansion depends on whether or not the reference signals of the serving and target cells interfere with each other. Embodiments of the disclosed handover algorithm can advantageously reduce the number of failed handovers by allowing some communication sessions to run to completion before a handover is triggered.

  • Patent number: 9887855
Abstract: A virtual converged cable access platform (CCAP) system and method for hybrid fiber CATV (HFC) cable networks. The system uses a new type of digital optical fiber node configured to receive optical fiber data packets, and reconstitute the optical data packets into RF waveforms suitable for injection into the system's CATV cable. The system replaces the legacy HFC head end with a simplified “virtual head end”. The system's virtual head end operates using a new type of virtual CCAP controller and virtual CCAP software that in turn controls high performance edge routers. Much of the intelligence of running the HFC cable system is managed by the controller software, while the edge router manages the interface between the CATV portion of the system and outside networks. The system can handle even legacy CATV RF signals by appropriate conversion operations, while reducing power and space needs, and improving operational flexibility.

  • Patent number: 9883052
Abstract: Systems, methods, and software that perform offline charging. One embodiment comprises a Charging Data Function (CDF) of an Offline Charging System (OFCS). The CDF receives accounting requests for a session from a Charging Trigger Function (CTF), and generates an incomplete Charging Data Record (CDR) for the session based on the accounting requests. The CDF identifies request identifiers (ID) assigned to the accounting requests used to generate the first incomplete CDR, and inserts the request IDs in the incomplete CDR. The CDF determines whether one or more of the accounting requests used to generate the incomplete CDR were indicated as a re-transmitted accounting request by the CTF, and inserts content information for the re-transmitted accounting request(s) in the incomplete CDR.

  • Publication number: 20180026725
Abstract: We disclose a transmitter that uses at least first and second fixed constellations in which the same bit-words are assigned to different respective constellation symbols of different respective transmit energies. The transmitter generates an outgoing data frame by first generating two data frames using the first and second constellations, respectively, and then selecting the one of the two data frames that has the lower overall transmit energy and discarding the other. The first and second constellations are constructed in a manner that enables the transmitter to realize a significant shaping gain. Some embodiments of the transmitter are compatible with the use of forward-error-correction coding and provide a shaping gain for the transmission of both information and parity bits. An example embodiment of the transmitter can advantageously be implemented with relatively low complexity by employing constellation mappers and demappers that operate using relatively small look-up tables.

  • Patent number: 9877198
Abstract: A manner of managing UE (user equipment) access to a core network via an access network. The access network may be a trusted or un-trusted network according to 3GPP protocols, and the core network may be or include an EPC. When a UE attempts access, a gateway node determines whether the UE will be authorized and responds accordingly. At least when the UE access request is rejected, a response is sent containing a backoff timer value. The backoff timer value may be based on, for example, the cause of the rejection or the number of attempts made by that UE or both. When the UE receives the response, the UE sets a backoff timer accordingly and preferably does not reattempt access until the backoff timer has expired. In some instances, the UE may be permitted to reattempt access immediately; in others, the UE may be directed not to reattempt access at all.

  • Publication number: 20180020442
Abstract: Embodiments provide a mobile communications device that includes a processor configured to communicate with a transceiver and a memory. The transceiver is configured to exchange control signals with a network node. The memory contains instructions that when executed by the processor configure the processor to operate the transceiver to exchange the control signals. The instructions further configure the processor to pass a first proper subset of the control signals to a remote device without operating according to the control signals, and to operate according to control signals in a second proper subset of the control signals. The processor is thereby configured to operate on behalf of a remote communication device to support communication between the remote communication device and the network node.

  • Patent number: 9871613
Abstract: We disclose an optical add-drop multiplexer that can apply different routing operations to different subcarriers of a data frame. In an example embodiment, the digital signal processor (DSP) of the optical add-drop multiplexer carries out subcarrier-specific add, drop, and pass-through operations in the electrical frequency domain, which enables the DSP to only partially unwrap the pass-through subcarriers, thereby at least partially avoiding some of the more processing-power-hungry DSP operations and reducing the sub-wavelength routing latency accordingly. Also disclosed is an example data-frame structure that can be used to provide subcarrier-specific routing instructions to the optical add-drop multiplexer.
