    Abstract: An overload or congestion condition on an access medium (24) of a communication network (22) is indicated by at least one condition that indicates an amount of access attempts on the access medium (24) corresponds to congestion or overload of a capacity of the access medium (24). Example conditions in disclosed embodiments include an occupancy level of the access medium, an average number of access probes associated with successful access attempts, a relationship between received power and interference, an emergency condition and network configuration or maintenance procedures. In a disclosed example, when congestion or overload occurs, at least one technique is implemented to reduce the congestion or overload for stabilizing the access medium. Disclosed example techniques for this include throttling the number of access attempt by reducing the number of users making access attempts or the frequency of user access attempts.

    Abstract: In one embodiment, at least one grouping message is broadcast from a network element. The grouping message causes an access terminal (AT) in the communications network to regard the at least first and second subnets as both being members of a same subnet group. Location information and a maximum distance parameter associated with at least one area and configured to create a buffer zone along a border between the first and second subnets are broadcasted from the network element to the AT. The AT is prevented from sending a subnet identifier request message when the AT has, as an origin area, an area of the first subnet in the buffer zone and the AT travels to an area of the second subnet in the buffer zone. Session transfers are performed outside the buffer zone triggered by distance based location update messages, thus preventing session transfer ping-ponging.

    Abstract: The present invention provides an improved solution of registering with a Home Agent HA of a Mobile Node MN, comprising: grouping at lest two Foreign Agents FAs to form a Foreign Agent Group FAG to enable FA members of the FAG to share information of the MN roaming into a FAG coverage area; when any FA member of the FAG receives a registration request for registering a care-of address with the HA sent by the MN, determining whether the MN enters the FAG coverage area for the first time based on the shared MN information; and if the MN enters the FAG coverage area for the first time, the FA forwards the received registration request to the HA; otherwise, the FA directly sends a registration response to the MN. The solution of the present invention greatly reduces registration messages from the MN to the HA, thereby reducing signaling delay produced when the MN moves in the FN.

    Abstract: Embodiments of the invention are directed to extended psuedowire groups in a packet switched network. Embodiments associate a pseudowire to one or more groups at each provider edge device across which the pseudowire traverses. When a pseudowire set-up request message traverses across various provider edge devices, each provider edge device typically adds one or more local group membership information elements into the pseudowire set-up request message. In that way the grouping assigned by each provider edge device that the pseudowire traverses is made available to all other provider edge devices traversed by the pseudowire. Advantageously, this availability pseudowire grouping information allows any of these provider edge devices to initiate a wildcard message to notify other provider edge devices with respect to pseudowires in any of its local groups, as well as allowing a pseudowire to be bound to multiple groups based on various requirements.
