Patent number: 6294842Abstract: A microturbine power generation system includes an electrical generator, a turbine, a compressor and a combustor. Hot expanding gases leaving the combustor are expanded by the turbine. The resulting turbine power is used for driving the compressor and the electrical generator. A recuperator recovers heat from a turbine exhaust stream and raises the temperature of compressed air prior to combustion. Fluid injection is accomplished in the system by using one or more nozzles to spray small fluid droplets, on the order of hundreds of microns or less in diameter, into the combustion air either upstream or downstream of the compressor, or both. The evaporative effect of the injected fluid is used to cool the generator components and to increase the effectiveness of the recuperator. The injected fluid also adds mass to the hot, expanding gases entering the turbine.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 1999Date of Patent: September 25, 2001Assignee: AlliedSignal Inc.Inventor: Mark J. Patent number: 6287955Abstract: The invention provides processes for the formation of structures in microelectronic devices such as integrated circuit devices. More particularly, the invention relates to the formation of vias, interconnect metallization and wiring lines using multiple low dielectric-constant inter-metal dielectrics. The processes use two or more dissimilar low-k dielectrics for the inter-metal dielectrics of Cu-based dual damascene backends of integrated circuits. The use of both organic and inorganic low-k dielectrics offers advantages due to the significantly different plasma etch characteristics of the two kinds of dielectrics. One dielectric serves as the etchstop in etching the other dielectric so that no additional etchstop layer is required. Exceptional performance is achieved due to the lower parasitic capacitance resulting from the use of low-k dielectrics.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 2000Date of Patent: September 11, 2001Assignee: AlliedSignal Inc.Inventors: Shi-Qing Wang, Henry Chung, James Lin

Patent number: 6286634Abstract: A convertible aircraft brake assembly (10, 60, 77, 78, 83, 85, 96, 120, 130) designed as original equipment to have heat sinks comprising a steel heat sink (20, 70, 80, 90, 91, 100, 110, 122) aircraft brake assembly and a carbon-carbon composite heat sink (40) aircraft brake assembly. When the aircraft brake assembly is converted from one type of heat sink to the other, the conversion is accomplished with minimal changes in component parts. The conversion can be accomplished without any changes in the piston housing (14), torque tube (12), and wheel (30) because the heat sinks include therein respective components which enable each heat sink to be utilized with the commonly used piston housing (14), torque tube (12), and wheel (30).Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 2001Date of Patent: September 11, 2001Assignee: AlliedSignal Inc.Inventors: David A. Patent number: 6285191Abstract: Current flowing into and out of a battery installed in a vehicle (V) with the required cable between one of the battery terminals and a reference point on the vehicle is determined by measuring the voltage across the cable and computing the current from the digital value of the measured current. The resistance value of the cable can be known in which case the current is computed using Ohms law and a differential current sensor can be used to respond to the voltage measured across the cable to accommodate for different ranges of current. In an embodiment where the cable resistance is unknown, a reference current source produces a known voltage that is used to set the input value to an amplifier of fixed gain for the voltage measured across the cable by controlling the output of a potentiometer so that the amplifier output voltage can be set to match the reference current generator output voltage, thereby establishing the voltage output of the amplifier as a measurement of the current flow in the cable.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 1999Date of Patent: September 4, 2001Assignee: AlliedSignal Inc.Inventors: Bernard P. Patent number: 6276254Abstract: An armor system useful, for example, as a shroud, comprising a first pliable, cut resistant fibrous layer and a second pliable fibrous layer is disclosed. The first layer is arranged to receive an impact from a large projectile prior to the second layer and engages the projectile to slow its velocity. The second layer is substantially coextensive with the first and dissipates the incoming energy of the impact to resist complete penetration of the second layer by the projectile, preferably by deforming in response to the impact. Both layers comprise fibers having a tensile modulus of at least about 200 g/d, and an energy-to-break of at least about 8 J/g and a tenacity equal to or greater than about 10 g/d. In another embodiment, the layers are reversed relative to the impact face of the system sq that the second layer becomes the first layer and is resistant to projectiles impacting the system, while the first layer becomes the second layer and resists deformation of the system by projectile impacts.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1999Date of Patent: August 21, 2001Assignee: AlliedSignal Inc.Inventors: David Solares Cordova, Kevin Mark Kirkland

Patent number: 6276124Abstract: A microturbine power generation system includes an electrical generator, a turbine and a compressor intermediate the generator and the turbine. Rotating components of the turbine, compressor and electrical generator are secured together by a tie-bolt. The tie-bolt is pre-stressed such that faces of the rotating components of the turbine, electrical generator and compressor maintain contact during high-speed, high-temperature operation of the system. The tie-bolt includes a thermally less conductive short portion that is secured to the rotating component of the turbine wheel, and an elongated portion that extends through the rotating components of the compressor and electrical generator. The short, thermally less conductive portion of the tie-bolt inhibits heat from propagating from the turbine end towards the compressor. The short, thermally less conductive portion can be a titanium rod that is inertia-welded between the elongated portion of the tie-bolt and the rotating component of the turbine.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1998Date of Patent: August 21, 2001Assignee: AlliedSignal Inc.Inventors: Jemeng Soh, Robert Chen, Steve Kuei
