  • Patent number: 6270536
Abstract: A method of fabricating solid oxide fuel cell electrodes, and in particular anodes, includes the steps of forming a microcomposite element comprising a plurality of layers of an electrically conductive tape and an electrolyte tape, with the plurality of layers forming a first electrically conductive pattern. A plurality of microcomposite subelements are created from the microcomposite element, with each microcomposite subelement having the first electrically conductive pattern. A plurality of the microcomposite subelements are juxtaposed to one another and also rotated in planes substantially parallel to one another. Thereby, a totality of the first electrically conductive patterns form a second electrically conductive pattern in the anode. Electrical conduction is established with the patterns all being in electrical contact with one another.

  • Patent number: 6270395
Abstract: An oxidizing slurry for removal of low dielectric constant materials. The slurry is formed utilizing non-oxidizing particles with a separate oxidizing agent, oxidizing particles alone or reducible abrasive particles with a compatible oxidizing agent. The particles can be formed of a metal oxide, nitride, or carbide material, by itself or mixtures thereof, or can be coated on a core material such as silicon dioxide or can be coformed therewith. A preferred oxidizing slurry is multi-modal in particle size distribution. Although developed for utilization in CMP semiconductor processing the oxidizing slurry of the present invention also can be utilized for other high precision polishing processes.

  • Patent number: 6264833
Abstract: A coolant filter kit, for attaching in-line to a coolant hose of a combustion engine, includes a fluid conduit member and a coolant filter apparatus. The fluid conduit member has a stem and two opposed branches connected to the stem, with an inlet formed in a first branch thereof, and an outlet formed in a second branch. The fluid conduit member further has a partition in the stem thereof, substantially separating a first flow chamber from a second flow chamber therewithin. The filter apparatus includes a hollow housing defining a filter chamber therein. A porous cylindrical filter element is disposed in the filter chamber of the housing. Optionally, the filter apparatus may include a slow-dissolving tablet or plug for releasing a supplemental coolant additive into coolant over time.

  • Patent number: 6264291
Abstract: A double check valve is integrally located in a spring brake chamber to reduce plumbing associated with a pneumatic brake system. Anti-compounding is provided by virtue of a bias pressure of approximately twenty to thirty psi between a pressure chamber of a service actuator and an operating chamber of a parking/emergency actuator. Likewise, vehicle roll-back is addressed since the transition from a service application to a park application assures that the service brakes are sufficiently applied until the spring brake becomes operative.

  • Publication number: 20010008110
Abstract: A method for making a glass frit paste is provided. First, nitrocellulose is dissolved in a high vapor pressure solvent of the nitrocellulose to make a solution. A portion of the solution is then mixed with alpha-terpineol to form a vehicle. Glass frit is mixed with the vehicle and then ground to form the paste. During the grinding step most of the high vapor pressure solvent evaporates. The resulting paste has a composition comprising about 0.3-12.0 wt. % nitrocellulose, about 0.5-2.0 wt. % of a high vapor pressure solvent of said nitrocellulose, about 14.0-25.0 wt. % alpha-terpineol, and the remainder glass frit.

  • Publication number: 20010008694
Abstract: The present invention provides highly oriented multilayer films. They are produced by coextruding or laminating films having at least one layer of a fluoropolymer, at least one layer of a polyolefin homopolymer or copolymer and an intermediate adhesive layer of a polyolefin having at least one functional moiety of an unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof. With this structure the polyolefin layer allows the fluoropolymer layer to be stretched up to ten times its original length. Such a high orientation ratio for the fluoropolymer film increases the mechanical strength, toughness, and water vapor barrier properties of the film while using a thinner gauge fluoropolymer film. Coextrusion processing can be done at higher temperatures, i.e. in the range of from at about 280° C. to about 400° C. These temperatures allow films to be produced in the absence of polymer degradation and film melt fracture.

  • Patent number: 6261056
Abstract: A ceramic nozzle for a gas turbine stage of a turbomachine (e.g., a turbopump) includes a splined mounting surface. Ceramic splines on the nozzle mounting surface are interlocked with metal mating splines on a surface of a turbine housing to prevent the nozzle from rotating relative to the housing. Both sets of splines extend in a radial direction, are straight and have trapezoidal shapes in transverse cross-section. These splines maintain a constant contact angle during large temperature excursions, when inherent thermal growth mismatches between ceramic and metal occur.

  • Patent number: 6263003
Abstract: A very high power fiber light source can be realized by using a high concentration of doping and by pumping the cladding of the doped fiber. The light that enters the cladding will then enter the core and amplified spontaneous emission will result. With this arrangement, higher power, a broader emission spectrum, and low radiation sensitivity can be achieved. These devices can also be configured as amplifiers.

  • Patent number: 6258479
Abstract: Deficiencies in the electrolyte level of the cells of NiCd battery can be detected by measuring the internal resistance of the cells. Initially, data is collected for a battery type and capacity, correlating measured internal resistance with the amount of water that must be added to bring the cell resistance to an acceptable value. Subsequently, cells of other batteries of the same type and capacity can be measured to determine how much water must be added and the levels quickly restored. The polarization value of the cells can be used lieu of the internal resistance in the same fashion.

  • Patent number: 6256977
Abstract: A start circuit controlled by an electronic control unit for providing power from one or both of a battery and TRU in parallel to a starter motor coupled to a gas turbine engine. The circuit includes contactors between the TRU and battery and a junction where the current from the TRU and battery combine. The circuit further includes two additional contactors in series between the junction and the starter motor. Voltage sensors and contactor position sensors are employed for diagnostics. A novel method of starting the engine using the start circuit contemplated by the present invention is also descibed. In this method, the start is initiated with power only from the battery. After a period of time power from the TRU is added. This method reduces the amplitude of the start motor inrush current, which has a beneficial reliability effect on the components of the start circuit.
