Abstract: A method and apparatus for recovering oil from shale comprises forming a bed of oil bearing shale particles on a plurality of rotatable apertured cylindrical rollers having filler members in the nip between adjacent rollers; transporting the bed by rotating the rollers to frictionally engage the shale particles and transfer them onto and across the filler members to continuously agitate the particles as they are being transported at a velocity substantially lower than the circumferential velocity of the rollers; passing through the moving bed at spaced points a plurality of discrete streams of nonoxidizing gas heated to different temperatures sufficiently high to educe different weight fractions of oil from the kerogen in the shale as vapors into the gas streams; and separating the different weight oil fractions from the gas streams.

Abstract: A seal for use in sealing an annular opening between a stationary member and a rotating cylinder telescopically arranged in the stationary member, the seal comprising an annular ring member circumscribing the cylinder adjacent the stationary member and closing the annular opening. The seal comprises weighting means extending axially away from a backside of the ring member to provide a counterweighting effect which causes a tilting of the ring member, whereby said tilting, and the rotation of the cylinder, moves the ring member into engagement with the stationary member to substantially seal the annular opening, all in accordance with the teaching of U.S. Pat. No. 3,042,389. The annular ring member is divided into a plurality of circumferentially extending segments in which adjacent segments are pivotally connected to each other to permit articulation of the segments to accommodate "out-of-round" portions of the rotating cylinder, all in accordance with the teachings of U.S. Pat. No. 4,209,175.

Abstract: An oil shale retorting method and apparatus moves a bed of oil bearing shale particles along a generally horizontal path and passes through the bed at spaced points a plurality of discrete nonoxidizing gas streams heated to different oil educting temperatures to vaporize and educe different weight fractions of oil from the kerogen in the shale into the gas streams. Preferably the heated gas streams are also passed through the moving shale bed upstream from distillation of the volatile oil constituents to preheat the shale particles and condense the educted oils which become suspended as stable mists and are mechanically separated from the gas streams. Heat energy is preferably removed from the spent shale particles of the moving bed by burning them with combustion air downstream from the retorting sites, and such heat energy is transferred to the nonoxidizing streams to raise them to different oil educting temperatures before they are passed through the moving bed to educe oil from the shale particles.
Abstract: A divider structure for a row crop harvester which includes a hood (8) and point (9) having flexible plastic sheathing (106, 37) supported on subframes (12, 13) which in turn are mounted on adjacent row units (131, 132).
Abstract: In order to provide a high cutting speed for a crop-cutting harvester (11), a torsion bar (101) is connected to the nondriven end of a crop-cutting sickle (28). The torsion bar (101) is connected to the sickle (28) by a lever (111 or 211) pivoting on the axis of the torsion bar. Counterweights (94, 131) may be added to adjust the resonant frequency, and hence, the resonant cutting speed. The use of a torsion bar on the nondriven end of the sickle, and none on the driven end, is believed to provide a high speed resonant sickle drive in which peak sickle forces are reduced.
Abstract: A hydrostatic drive system having a closed loop front wheel drive circuit and a closed loop rear wheel drive circuit. A variable displacement pump in each of the circuits is cammed to vary the displacement delivered to dual displacement wheel motors to provide two speed ranges for the drive system. A servosystem uses hydraulic fluid to cam the displacement of the variable displacement pump and a hydraulic control to selectively engage each of the drive ranges.
Abstract: A harvester in the form of a self-propelled combine (11) has a crop header (24) and conveying means (31, 32) feeding crop material to a threshing rotor (34). The speed of rotation of the rotor (34) is adjustable by changing the speed of a variable speed belt drive (50) in the drive train from an engine (16) to the threshing rotor (34). The variable speed belt drive (50) is of a type whose speed ratio cannot be changed unless it is running. A special rotor clutch (71) is interposed between the variable speed belt drive (50) and the threshing rotor (34) to permit the variable speed drive to be disconnected from the threshing rotor. Thus, when the rotor (34) stops rotating because of excess crop material, the rotor clutch (71) may be operated to break the power train between the variable speed belt drive (50) and the threshing rotor (34) and the variable speed belt drive (50) may be run and adjusted to a lower output speed.
Abstract: A cable retainer clip for locking a sheath of a sheathed cable on a vehicle chassis. The retainer clip fastens the cable in a slot to anchor it in a fixed position.

Abstract: A fork lift truck has a safety system for inhibiting further raising of the carriage or further forward tilting of the mast when an excessive tilting moment is acting on the truck and permits the truck operator to selectively simulate an overload on the truck and provides a visual indication that the safety system has responded properly to such simulated overload, thereby permitting the truck operator to test whether or not the truck is protected from picking up an overload.
Abstract: Connecting rod orifices spray oil on the underside of a piston of an internal combustion engine. The orifices are constructed to produce a wide spray evenly distributed across the underside of the piston beneath the combustion chamber in the internal combustion engine.
Abstract: A vehicle transmission having power shift means and an overrunning clutch to selectively provide a multiple speed transmission with shifting of the vehicle transmission while the vehicle is operating. The transmission includes a main drive shaft, a jackshaft and a countershaft with a selective manual gear shift on the countershaft. The main drive is through the countershaft and a plurality of gearsets having clutching means to manually select one of a plurality of speed ratios. The first input speed drives through the first overrunning clutch to the main drive shaft. The jackshaft is selectively engaged through a power shift clutch to provide a second input speed to the main drive shaft. When the jackshaft is in operation, the first overrunning clutch is disengaged and the drive is through the power shift clutch to rotate the main drive shaft at the higher speed.
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for feeding a continuous supply of carbonaceous material into a pressurized reactor for producing a product gas from the material and which contains toxic and flammable gases. The apparatus comprises a first rotary gas lock for receiving the material from ambient atmospheric condition. The first lock is supplied with a flow of nitrogen as a sealing gas to prevent air from entering the lock and the apparatus. The first lock transfers the material to a second rotary gas lock which in turn transfers the material to a screw conveyor for delivery to the interior of the reactor. The second lock is supplied with a flow of a clean product gas as a buffer gas. The clean product gas supplied to the second lock is at a pressure greater than the pressure in the reactor and prevents flow of gases from the reactor to the apparatus.

Abstract: A support structure for a hydraulic turbine is disclosed where the turbine has a generally horizontal drive shaft enclosed within a bulb housing. The housing is contained within a hydraulic passage formed by duct walls within the structures foundation. A structural inner stay cone is provided in the bulb housing perpendicular to the axis of the drive shaft. An outer stay cone is provided in the duct wall coplanar with the inner stay cone. A pair of vertical stay columns extend from the bottom of the outer vane to the top of the outer stay cone while passing through and affixed to the inner stay cone. The stay columns are perpendicular to the drive shaft with the shaft extending between the two stay columns. Vertical piers abutting the stay columns extend from the duct wall to the housing both above and beneath the housing.
