  • Patent number: 4665828
Abstract: The invention relates to a penetrator (1, 11) made of heavy metal, such as, for instance, tungsten heavy metal or depleted uranium, for driving-cage projectiles which have the penetrator led by the driving cage in the gun barrel. The driving cage (6, 12) detaches itself from the penetrator after the launch. The penetrator (1, 11) shows lower strength and higher ductility in the middle portion (d) of its length than in its head portion (c) and, in its tail portion, it shows higher strength and lower ductility than in its middle portion (d) and lower strength and higher ductility than in its head portion (c). This shall decrease the risk of fracture when striking an armour.

  • Patent number: 4644557
Abstract: In a process for the production of calcium carbide in a shaft furnace, a plasma arc (plasma torch) is generated by the introduction of electric energy with the help of a plasma burner device penetrating the upper cover of the shaft furnace. A counter electrode is provided in the bottom part of the shaft furnace. About the plasma arc or torch, a burden mixture of calcium-oxide and carbon-containing substances is concentrically introduced so as to form a protective mound of solid burden components on the inner wall of the furnace. In order to provide an operationally safe process by using plasma burners, with which both coarse and fine-grain burden components may be employed and with which calcium carbide is obtained in higher yields with an improved utilization of the energy consumed, the burden mixture is used separately as a coarse-grain fraction and as a fine-grain fraction.

  • Patent number: 4643656
Abstract: A take-away device for a plastic tubing produced in a blowing process in which the tubing is flattened by squeeze rollers followed by a pair of take-away rollers. The pair of take-away rollers which have horizontal axes of rotation swivel reversingly about a vertical axis of rotation. The flattened tubing is fed to a stationary wind-up device, whereby two turning rods over which the flattened tubing is guided, are arranged between the take-away rollers and the stationary wind-up device, and swivel reversingly about the vertical axis of rotation of the pair of squeeze rollers. The first turning rod can thereby be swivelled about a first vertical axis which, together with the take-away rollers, swivels about the vertical axis of rotation of the pair of take-away rollers.

  • Patent number: 4641889
Abstract: In a cutting machine, a cutting arm is swivellable around a horizontal axis and around a vertical axis and carries on its free end a cutting tool. The horizontal swivelling axis of the cutting arm is displaceable relative to the frame of the cutting machine. Displacing of the horizontal swivelling axis is allowed by arranging the swivelling axis on a rocker arm connected with the frame of the cutting machine and is turnable around a vertical axis and is swivellable around a horizontal swivelling axis. With the rocker arm assuming a lowered position, the horizontal swivelling axis of the rocker arm is, as seen in an advancing direction, located in front of the horizontal swivelling axis of the cutting arm. The swivelling drive, for example is formed of a hydraulic piston-cylinder-arrangement, for swivelling the cutting arm around its horizontal swivelling axis and is supported on the rocker arm.

  • Patent number: 4635832
Abstract: In a method of casting a metal melt from a metallurgical vessel, in which the metal melt is covered by a slag layer, into another metallurgical vessel, the metal melt is guided through a casting tube, which covers the casting jet between the vessels. In order to reliably ascertain the passage of slag through the casting tube with very little expenditure, magnetic fields are induced in the casting jet by two coils peripherally surrounding the casting tube. The difference of the inductivity variations caused in the two coils by the eddy currents produced by the magnetic fields in the casting jet is continuously measured and compared to a least one limit value and casting is interrupted in case the limit has been exceeded or fallen short of.

  • Patent number: 4617671
Abstract: With a method for producing metals, the raw material is melted in a metallurgical vessel by at least one plasma burner directed from top to bottom. In order to be able to protect the furnace brickwork from too strong a thermal load exerted by the plasma jet, and to make available the energy supplied by the plasma burner to melting and reducing the fine ore to as large an extent as possible as well as to prevent an agglomeration of the raw material to be used, the raw material is topcharged into the metallurgical vessel in the form of fine particles directed parallel to the plasma jet so as to peripherally surround the same. Oxygen-containing gases and carbon are bottom-blown into the vessel through the melt. A foamed slag is formed in the vessel, surrounding the plasma jet over its total height and the flow of supplied raw material particles peripherally.
