  • Patent number: 5804258
Abstract: In a process for coating a substrate surface with a layer of inorganic material, the inorganic material is vaporised in a vacuum chamber evacuated to at least 10.sup.-3 mbar by bombarding with an electron beam from a high voltage electron-beam gun and deposited on the substrate surface. Gas discharging is created between the point of incidence (A) of the electron beam on the inorganic material to be vaporised and an anode such that the electrostatic charge created by the high voltage electron-beam gun flows off via the anode. This way damage to the substrate, which may arise as a result discharging phenomena, can be effectively avoided.

  • Patent number: 5795628
Abstract: Device containing a vacuum chamber 30 and situated therein a substrate 10 and a vaporization crucible 22 filled with inorganic materials 24. Situated in the region of the vacuum chamber 30 is an electron beam or laser gun 26, the electron or laser beam 27 of which is directed at the crucible 22. The device is employed for coating a substrate surface 18 e.g. a plastic film with a thin coating of inorganic materials, such as e.g. silicon oxides, by vapor deposition of the inorganic materials 24.The electron or laser beam 27 of the electron beam or laser gun 26 is directed at the surface of the inorganic materials 24 in the vaporizing crucible 22. The electron or laser beam 27 forms an angle .alpha. of 10.degree. to 80.degree. to the surface of the inorganic materials 24. On vaporizing the inorganic materials 24 an overhang 25 is formed in the inorganic materials 24 and, geometrically, there is no line of sight between the vaporizing inorganic materials and the substrate surface 18.

  • Patent number: 5784970
Abstract: A carriage body frame with a passenger compartment having longitudinal load-bearing sections of aluminum and light-weight composite panels between the load-bearing sections is such that the composite panels feature a plastic core with aluminum outer sheets adhesively bonded to both sides. The outer sheets extend partially over an aluminum connecting section which is integral to the composite panel; and fit to this by virtue of shape. The connecting section exhibits connecting strips which rest on correspondingly arranged connecting strips on the load-bearing section. The connecting section is joined to the load-bearing section by of laser welding. The outer sheets are joined at a free edge, likewise by laser welding, to the connecting section and, in the region of at least one connecting strip, the connecting section exhibits a U-shaped longitudinal channel which acts as a trap for adhesive and over which an outer sheet passes.

  • Patent number: 5730201
Abstract: Process for manufacturing shaped parts out of thixotropic metal billets in horizontal pressure diecasting machines such that inclusions of oxide skin surrounding the thixotropic metal billet are avoided in the alloy structure of the shaped part. Before introducing the thixotropic metal alloy into the space inside the mould, the oxide skin surrounding the metal billet is removed completely and collected in a container such that removal of oxide-free, homogeneous thixotropic metal alloy is minimized by taking into account the thermal and mechanical properties of the thixotropic billet, which are asymmetric with respect to the longitudinal axis of the metal billet. The removal of the oxide skin takes place in a horizontal diecasting machine which contains an oxide remover between the casting chamber and the mold. The oxide remover is represented by a ring-shaped body with a horizontal concentric middle axis and a throughput opening.

  • Patent number: 5727710
Abstract: Gas-tight container featuring an outer shell of metal or metal and plastic or metal and cellulose-containing material, a base, a lid and at least one side-wall. The container may be e.g. a can with, as viewed in plan view, a polygonal, round or oval cross-section. The base or part of the base of the gas-tight container exhibits a region which may be made to bulge and which is surrounded by an endless depression and, in the condition in which the can may be used, is in the form of a concave bulge. A container of this kind is such that one can readily recognize if the contents have suffered from spoiling or decomposition and, as a consequence, gas has been formed inside the container. If the pressure inside the container increases, the bulge is pushed outwards and, usefully, may form a convex bulge.

  • Patent number: 5709952
Abstract: A process for joining components made of metal, in particular aluminum and aluminum alloys, is such that a thermally-curable (hardenable) adhesive is deposited between the close-fitting surfaces of the components that are to be joined, and one of the outer surfaces neighboring the said close-fitting surface of one of the components is radiated with infra-red radiation in order to cure the adhesive. At least the outer surface to be radiated is provided with a pattern that roughens that surface. By reducing the reflectivity of the roughened surface the capacity to absorb infra-red radiation is increased. A preferred application for the process is in the adhesive bonding of shaped parts, especially body sheet in automobile manufacture.

  • Patent number: 5693208
Abstract: A process for producing an oxide layer with a pore structure on the surface of a strip or wire of aluminum or an aluminum alloy is such that the strip or wire is passed continuously through an electrolyte and simultaneously anodized under conditions that create pores and at an anodizing voltage creating the desired thickness of oxide layer. In a first stage of the process, in order to form a fine pore structure, the anodizing voltage is set at an initial level (U.sub.1) and subsequently, in a second stage to form a coarser pore structure, raised to a final level (U.sub.2) required to reach the desired thickness of oxide layer.

  • Patent number: 5683198
Abstract: A corner connector (3) joins together two orthogonally disposed sections (1, 2) with C-shaped connecting means. The sections (1,2) have two flanges (11) with a strut (12) on each projecting inwards. The corner connector (3) comprises two angular pieces (4), at least two wedging pieces (5), at least two bolts (6) and at least two clamping pieces (7). The angular pieces (4) have on each flange a wedging surface (22) that press against the nose (14) of the struts (12), and a wedging surface (28) on the side opposite the flange. The wedging piece (5) is drawn by bolt (6) over the wedging surface (28) between the flanges (20), causing the flanges (20) to be tensed against the section. The clamping pieces (7) engage on the projections (13) on the struts (12). The wedging pieces (5) tensed against the clamping pieces (7) do not cause the flanges (11) to be spread apart. This arrangement results in a joint exhibiting high bend strength and high tensile strength in particular by means of friction.

  • Patent number: 5676791
Abstract: The invention describes a device and a process for producing extrusion-coated laminates. The extrusion device contains an extruder nozzle with nozzle lip, a cooling roller and a contact roller, wherein the cooling roller and the contact roller form a roller gap and the extruder nozzle is directed towards the roller gap. A melt of thermoplastic plastics, which enters the roller gap while forming a coating film and is joined to a substrate film in the roller gap, emerges from the nozzle lip. A device for improving the adhesion of the coating film to the substrate is thus disposed in the region between the extruder nozzle and the roller gap at a slight distance from the film. The device is a corona treatment station which has a discharge electrode at high voltage and an electrically earthed counter-electrode on only one side of the coating film.
