Patent number: 4108690Abstract: A method is disclosed for producing a non-crystalline, light weight tightly adherent coating of calcium phosphate on ferrous metal surfaces. In this method, the ferrous metal surface is treated with a coating solution containing calcium phosphate together with an oxidizing agent at a pH which closely approaches but does not exceed the saturation point of the calcium phosphate in solution. In practicing the method of this invention, the calcium phosphate content of the coating bath is preselected from the range of from about 0.01 to about 1.0 moles per liter as measured by the Ca.sup.++ cation. Next, a bath temperature of from about 50.degree. F. to about 160.degree. F. is selected. The pH of the bath is raised to a pH approaching but not exceeding the saturation point of calcium phosphate at the selected temperature and the bath is brought to the selected temperature.Coating of the ferrous metal with the calcium phosphate solution is accomplished by conventional dip or spray methods.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1977Date of Patent: August 22, 1978Assignee: Amchem Products, Inc.Inventor: Ferdinand P. Patent number: 4082867Abstract: Oil emulsion is removed from the surfaces of articles by washing the articles with an aqueous solution of wash water and demulsifier, thereby forming a turbulent mixture of the wash water, the demulsifier and the oil emulsion. The demulsifier is effective in breaking the oil emulsion. The liberated oil is allowed to form a separate phase in the solution of wash water/demulsifier, and is removed therefrom in a quiescent stage. The aqueous solution of wash water and demulsifier having the oil removed therefrom is recycled to wash oil emulsion from other of said articles. The preferred demulsifiers are ammonium and alkali metal sulfates and bisulfates.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 1976Date of Patent: April 4, 1978Assignee: Amchem Products, Inc.Inventors: Thomas D. Patent number: 4012351Abstract: An acidic aqueous coating composition containing an organic coating-forming material forms on a metallic surface immersed therein a coating, the weight or thickness of which is related to the time the surface is immersed in the composition. The coating composition, which tends to become unstable as a result of the build up of metal ions in the composition, is stabilized by removing the metal ions with an ion exchange material. Also, in maintaining stability, anionic and/or nonionic surfactants or dispersing agents, which are present in the composition to disperse the organic-coating forming material, are added to the composition in an amount in excess of that which is added to replenish the organic coating-forming material as it is consumed during use. Also, coating compositions treated with the ion exchange material tend to produce coatings which have a textured or grainy appearance.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1974Date of Patent: March 15, 1977Assignee: Amchem Products, Inc.Inventors: Wilbur S.
