Abstract: An electronic assistant handles instant messages sent to a user when the user is away or offline. The electronic assistant may respond intelligently and helpfully to inquiries regarding the user's away or offline status, may take messages for delivery to the away or offline user, and may intelligently forward messages to the user, as appropriate.

Abstract: A domain specification system for an LDAP ACI entry provides a system for specifying an ACI domain entry in an access control command line that controls access to a resource. The access control command specifies resources using a Universal Resource Locator (URL) format that contains the name of the resource. A target scope value specifies the scope of access to be granted to a user which can be limited to a single entry, a subtree, or a single level. A search filter is part of the resource specification. The ACI applies only to entries in the subtree rooted at the resource name that match the filter. A list of attributes is also contained in the resource specification and the ACI applies only to attributes in the resource that are named in the list. The access control command specifies the type of access to be granted to a user which includes, but is not limited to: deny, read, write, and any other privileges that the system supports.

Abstract: A user of an instant messaging system may store names of other users of the instant messaging system on a participant list (which may be referred to as a “buddy list”), and the names may be categorized into one or more groups. Similarly, a user of a mobile device, such as a mobile telephone, may store contact information about people on the mobile device. Information describing the on-line presence of the user within the instant messaging system or geographic location of a mobile device, such as a mobile telephone associated with the user system, may be disseminated to users on the participant list or people on the contact list based on notification information that is associated with groups of users or contacts. A delegation model is used to control whether a user is permitted to make modifications to the notification information.

Abstract: Digital images are monitored by enabling access to a digital image, receiving a notification associated with the digital image from a first user, and regulating access of the first user to the digital image based on the notification received from the first user.

Abstract: A call management method is provided for giving notification of calls unanswered at a destination telephone number and real-time management options for the unanswered call. When control of a call is passed to a call management server (50), notification of an incoming call is sent to a subscriber associated with a destination telephone (22). Incoming call notification is provided via a wireless data messaging terminal (28) and includes information about the incoming call. The subscriber provides instructions in real-time for routing the incoming call.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for populating a form with data is described. In one embodiment of the invention, a form is displayed to the user via the target application. Each form has one or more data receptacles. The data receptacles of a form are filled with data when the user executes a data population command. The form completion program executes the data population command when a graphical representation of a particular data set is placed over the form. Each data set is stored in an encrypted manner and is accessible to users who enter the appropriate information into an authentication mechanism. To populate a form with data the form completion program obtains an image of the form and then searches for a template file that resembles the form image to within a certain threshold. The template files are typically stored on the computer hosting the target application in a template directory that is arranged according to a predefined structure.

Abstract: An apparatus and method is provided for allowing users to share services without sharing identities. Specifically, the apparatus and method allow users to share pseudonyms instead of actual user names, thus protecting both users from unwanted emails, IM messages, and the like. The invention provides an introduction scheme, which comprises a simple and secure way of establishing a user to user link. A preferred embodiment incorporates services of a linked federation network service, such as AOL's Liberty Alliance service, without exposing real user names to other users.

Abstract: Separations or images relating to film or other fields may be registered using a variety of features, such as, for example: (1) correcting one or more film distortions; (2) automatically determining a transformation to reduce a film distortion; (3) applying multiple criteria of merit to a set of features to determine a set of features to use in determining a transformation; (4) determining transformations for areas in an image or a separation in a radial order; (5) comparing areas in images or separations by weighting feature pixels differently than non-feature pixels; (6) determining distortion values for transformations by applying a partial distortion measure and/or using a spiral search configuration; (7) determining transformations by using different sets of features to determine corresponding transformation parameters in an iterative manner; and (8) applying a feathering technique to neighboring areas within an image or separation.

Abstract: A method and system are defined which determine one or more alternate textual interpretations of each sequence of inputs detected within a designated auto-correcting keyboard region. The actual contact locations for the keystrokes may occur outside the boundaries of the specific keyboard key regions associated with the actual characters of the word interpretations proposed or offered for selection, where the distance from each contact location to each corresponding intended character may in general increase with the expected frequency of the intended word in the language or in a particular context. Likewise, in a mechanical keyboard system, the keys actuated may differ from the keys actually associated with the letters of the word interpretations. Each such sequence corresponds to a complete word, and the user can easily select the intended word from among the generated interpretations.

Abstract: A host system may include a content manager application or tool that may be used with a browser application, a content manager database, and a content manager server. The content manager may determine the classification (e.g., static or dynamic) and the content map rating (e.g., a content map) associated with any address (e.g., a URL) network information that is stored in a static resource classifiers. The content manager may be used by a system administrator to view and/or to override the static classifiers.

Abstract: A Chinese text entry system and method is provided to allow users to enter a character to a device such as a cellular phone or a PDA by adding a first few strokes required for the character using a joystick or its equivalent. By simply moving the joystick to add one or more strokes which are used to start writing a character, or in some case even before any stroke is added, a user can find a desired character from a displayed selection list. The selection list is context sensitive, varying depending on the last character entered, so that the user can be provided with the most possible candidates of the desired character.

Abstract: A probabilistic classifier is used to classify data items in a data stream. The probabilistic classifier is trained, and an initial classification threshold is set, using unique training and evaluation data sets (i.e., data sets that do not contain duplicate data items). Unique data sets are used for training and in setting the initial classification threshold so as to prevent the classifier from being improperly biased as a result of similarity rates in the training and evaluation data sets that do not reflect similarity rates encountered during operation. During operation, information regarding the actual similarity rates of data items in the data stream is obtained and used to adjust the classification threshold such that misclassification costs are minimized given the actual similarity rates.

Abstract: The digital asset management system is responsive to user interactions with digital assets. Based on user interaction, the system generates a ranking of digital assets to reflect the value of the digital assets to the user. The ranking is based in part on access frequency and recency, and the number and types of uses of the digital assets. An access hierarchy is derived from the ranking that stores the digital assets so that higher ranked digital assets are more easily accessed from storage than lower ranked digital assets. The digital assets can include any of digital images, audio files, and Uniform Resource Locators. The system can also distinguish between different types of uses, such as passive viewing or playback, file sharing, transport, and editing. The system preferably allows subjective values to be assigned to digital assets that can be factored into the ranking independently of usage patterns.

Afterwards, a determination is made to store the electronic information on a second storage medium that is more accessible to the access requesters than the first storage medium. The determination is based on an anticipated demand of the access requestors for the electronic information. The anticipated demand is determined based at least on information that is not particular to any single access requestor. The electronic information then is stored on the second storage medium and the access requesters are provided access to the electronic information from the second storage medium.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for displaying a route symbol with narrative driving directions. A route symbol for a particular maneuver may be used to represent the road to which the maneuver relates. For example, one type of a route symbol that may be used to represent a road may be an interstate route symbol that has substantially the same appearance (e.g., substantially the same or similar shape, and/or substantially the same coloration) as an interstate route sign used to mark the interstate itself. Another example of a type of a route symbol that represents a road is an highway route symbol that looks substantially the same as a highway route sign used to mark a state highway. A route symbol used for the display of a maneuver also may include route symbols that are related to the type of maneuver, such as the type of a turn, described by the maneuver.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for reducing the number of maneuvers presented in narrative driving directions for a route from an origin location to a destination location. Maneuvers are combined to reduce the number of maneuvers presented. Maneuvers may be combined based on a maneuver being associated with a highway interchange or maneuvers including a shared reference to a particular road.
