Abstract: A silicon on insulator (SOI) photonic device having a waveguide is provided that includes a mode overlap portion with a topology optimized structure situated below an electrode of the capacitance structure. The device can significantly change a refractive index in a volume of mode overlap depending upon the applied potential to the capacitor and allows for a ? phase shift in a modest mode overlap volume. The topology optimized structure has a waveguide and substrate that are partitioned in three dimensions using an extruded projection design. The electrode is a transition metal di-chalcogenide monolayer sheet (2D TMD). The enhanced mode overlay from the topology optimized waveguide portion allows a large reduction in the length of the waveguide with the mode overlap to achieve the needed phase shift for a photonic device.

Abstract: Systems for magnetoacoustically transferring sound across an acoustic barrier include first and second acoustic resonators positioned on opposite sides of the barrier. Each of the first and second resonators includes an attached magnet. Via magnetic coupling between the magnets, an acoustic oscillation at the first resonator induces an oscillation of the same frequency at the second resonator. Thus sound waves absorbed at the first resonator are magnetically transferred across the barrier to the second resonator, from which they are emitted.

The electronic control unit is configured to determine when a plurality of display data displayed on a display device behind a steering wheel is blocked by the steering wheel from a field of view of a driver, determine when a desirable notification is included in the plurality of display data, and when the desirable notification is included and the field of view of the desirable notification for the driver is blocked by the steering wheel, control the projection system to project the desirable notification onto the projection surface of the steering wheel that fully covers the steering wheel such that the steering wheel appears to be transparent when the desirable notification is displayed onto the projection surface.

In one embodiment, a method includes in response to initiating hitchless towing between a lead vehicle and a following vehicle, generating a hitching path that provides a route from the following vehicle to the lead vehicle, controlling the following vehicle to travel the hitching path, aligning the following vehicle with the lead vehicle, and controlling the following vehicle to perform the hitchless towing by following the lead vehicle without a physical connection.

Abstract: Method and systems for determining when to cancel coolant stop. An initial coolant temperature value is measured. The initial coolant temperature value is used to create Multiple Control Valve (MCV) opening thresholds. A first threshold is generated for MCV opening threshold for engine speed. A second threshold is generated for MCV opening for intake air mass flow. A comparison is made between the first threshold and the currently measured engine speed and/or a comparison is made between the second threshold and the currently measured intake air mass flow. The comparison(s) are then used to determine when to cancel coolant stop and open the MCV.
