  • Patent number: 5215543
Abstract: Methods are provided for abrading dyed fabric to produce a stonewashed effect by tumbling the fabric with stones of a chemical composition that is soluble in wash or rinse liquid for the fabric, where the stones are of sufficient size and hardness to effect abrasion of the fabric without substantial mechanical disintegration of the stones and in a manner simulating the action of pumice stone. The chemical stonewashing composition may be a compacted powder, agglomerate, coagulate, or other integral mass or solid formed from an alkali or alkaline earth metal carbonate, bicarbonate, silicate, sulfate, borate, halide, hydroxide or hydrate or peroxyhydrate thereof, for example.

  • Patent number: 5214147
Abstract: N-(2,2,6,6-tetraalkyl-4-piperidinyl)amide-hydrazides of dicarboxylic acids contain a light stabilizing group, a heat stabilizing group, and a reactive hydrazide functionality in the same molecule. The reactive stabilizers are prepared by reacting 4-amino-2,2,6,6-tetraalkylpiperidines with diesters (or mono ester acid chlorides) of dicarboxylic acids or dialkyl itaconates followed by hydrazinolysis of the ester group of the intermediate mono esteramide. The compounds are useful for introducing permanent heat and light stability to coreactive polymers or copolymers. They are also useful in the stabilization of inert polymeric systems against the degradative effects of heat and light when merely mixed with, rather than reacted with, the polymers for which stabilization is sought.

  • Patent number: 5206378
Abstract: Ultraviolet light stabilizers are chemically bound to anhydride containing polymers or copolymers. Polymeric stabilizers are prepared by the reaction of primary amino or hydrazido-substituted UV absorbers with some or all of the anhydride groups of the polymer or copolymer to form pendant stabilizer substituted imide or amic acid groups. The polymer bound stabilizers are not lost from the polymer system by volatilization, migration, or extraction, even at high temperature. The polymer stabilizers of this invention may be used as they are or as concentrates to stabilize other polymer systems.

  • Patent number: 5201322
Abstract: A device is disclosed for detecting the presence and direction of air flow through a passageway having a first opening and a second opening for air to flow therethrough in either a first direction or a second direction. The device comprises a piezoelectric sensor located within the passageway. A flow director is provided within the passageway for directing air flow through the passageway for impingement upon the sensor. The sensor generates a first electrical signal when air flows through the passageway in the first direction and a second electrical signal when air flows through the passageway in the second direction. A discriminator is electrically connected to the sensor for receiving the first and second electrical signals and for discriminating between the two signals to identify the direction of air flow through the passageway.
