  • Patent number: 5096974
Abstract: Polymer bound stabilizer compounds are provided in which two or more different classes of stabilizers are chemically bound to anhydride containing polymers or copolymers. Polymeric stabilizers are prepared by the reaction of primary amino or hydrazido substituted stabilizers (i.e., antioxidants, light stabilizers, etc.) with some or all of the anhydride groups of the polymer or copolymer to form pendant stabilizer substituted imide or amic acid groups. The polymer bound stabilizers are not lost from the polymer system by volatilization, migration or extraction, even at high temperatures. The polymer bound stabilizer compounds may be used as concentrates to stabilize other polymer systems.

  • Patent number: 5093427
Abstract: Melt processable copolymers of vinylidene fluoride and hexafluoropropylene, containing from about 1% to about 20% hexafluoropropylene by weight, are prepared by emulsion polymerization of vinylidene fluoride and hexafluoropropylene in a stirred aqueous reaction medium. The reaction medium is formed by charging to a heated reactor, water, vinylidene fluoride, an initiator to start the polymerization, and a water-soluble surfactant capable of emulsifying both the initiator and the reaction mass during polymerization. Additional amounts of vinylidene fluoride and initiator are fed to the reaction medium to continue polymerization of the vinylidene fluoride monomer until from about 50% to about 90% of the total weight of the vinylidene fluoride monomer utilized in the process has been added to the reaction medium.

  • Patent number: 5089246
Abstract: A process for converting carbon disulfide (CS.sub.2) to hydrogen sulfide (H.sub.2 S) in mixtures of H.sub.2 S and CS.sub.2 is provided. The H.sub.2 S/CS.sub.2 mixture is combined with water to form a hydrolysis feed mixture. The hydrolysis feed mixture is passed through a hydrolysis reactor containing e.g., an alumina-based catalyst, wherein a substantial portion of the CS.sub.2 is converted to additional H.sub.2 S. A vapor product comprising H.sub.2 S, CO.sub.2, unreacted H.sub.2 O, unconverted CS.sub.2 and sulfur is formed by the hydrolysis reaction. The vapor product is cooled to form a H.sub.2 S/CO.sub.2 vapor phase and a sour water condensate phase. The H.sub.2 S/CO.sub.2 vapor phase is separated from the sour water condensate phase and subsequently recovered. The sour water condensate phase, which contains small amounts of solid sulfur particles, is optionally then combined with additional CS.sub.2 and decanted to form a sulfur-free sour water layer and a CS.sub.2 layer containing dissolved sulfur.

  • Patent number: 5081953
Abstract: Improved apparatus for coating glass containers provides a coating on the body for improved resistance to impact breakage and abrasion, while coating of threads or lugs at the open tops of the containers is limited to about one-tenth, or less, of the coating on the surfaces of the body, which surfaces are exposed to contact with other containers during handling. The apparatus provides a laminar flow of fluid which is free of coating-precursor chemical over the threads or lugs in a manner which minimizes turbulence and intermixing with the coating stream.
