Abstract: The invention allows a shearography system to successfully sense ground/surface vibrations while moving at aircraft speeds and altitudes. This is done by effectively making stationary the apparent location of a coherent laser beam illuminating an area on the ground/surface, and also effectively making stationary the apparent location of the aperture of an optical receiver which acquires pairs of sequential images captured and used for shearography. A different laser is used for capturing each of the two images, and the distance between the two lasers is adjusted based on a number of operational parameters. The adjustment of the distance causes the apparent locations of the transmitter and a receiver sub-aperture to remain the same and permits the moving shearography to work.

Abstract: A system and method for improving the survivability of space systems following a High Altitude Nuclear Explosion (HANE) incident resulting in energetic electrons being trapped in the inner radiation belt of Earth is disclosed. The ULF electromagnetic waves is generated by space or ground based transmitters and the frequency range is selected such that the injected waves are in gyrofrequency resonance with trapped energetic particles. The Radiation Belt Remediation (RBR) depends on the wave-number of the injected waves and the wave-number of the injected waves increases along their propagation path when they approach the cyclotron frequency of the dominant or minority ions 0+, He+ and H+.

Abstract: A desalination apparatus is disclosed which uses a salt sponge unit to remove a majority of salt from water. A parallel plate capacitor can be connected after the salt sponge to remove remaining salt ions. The salt sponge is a nanoporous, high surface area carbon scaffold to which crown ethers are attached. A power supply is connected to the salt sponges for applying a bias voltage to regenerate the salt sponges. A chlorine treatment unit can be connected after the parallel plate capacitor. A method of purifying sea water using the apparatus also is disclosed.

Abstract: A pneumatically controlled, two part, rotational face seal is disclosed that has dual modes of operation. There is a first, static mode where a face of each of the two parts of the seal touch each other and provide an air, liquid and water vapor tight, very low leakage rate with high rotational friction between the two parts of the seal. In the second, dynamic mode wherein the two parts of the seal are separated by inert gas and the face seal functions as a gas bearing having very low rotational friction as the two parts are rotated with respect to each other. One part of the seal may be attached to a rotatable turret and the other part may be attached to a base on which the turret is mounted.

Abstract: A specific emitter identification (SEI) method and apparatus is capable of identifying and tracking objects within a geographical area of interest wherein the system and method has not been preprogrammed to look for particular signals. The system and method receives all of the emitted electromagnetic signals emitted from area of interest. The system and method next performs high order statistical analysis on the received signals and determines which signals emanate from possible targets of interest and which likely emanate from background clutter/noise by comparing the relative degrees of Gaussianness of the signals (for example using entropy measurements). The least Gaussian signals are deemed to likely be signals from potential targets of interest while those which are more Gaussian are deemed to be likely from background clutter or noise.

Abstract: A method for correlating an image to align two sensors comprising the steps of centering an imaging unit on a landmark that provides good contrast and distinct edges so as to provide a scene, taking a snapshot of the scene from both sensors, applying a Sobel edge filter to the image from both sensors to create two strong edge maps, cropping a small block of one image centered about the landmark and cross-correlating it on a larger region centered on an expected position of the landmark in the other image, and from the position of the strongest correlation peak determining the position of the center of the block from the first image, providing the difference in the alignment of the two sensors.

Abstract: An algorithm system to detect a broad class of signals in Gaussian noise using higher-order statistics. The algorithm system detects a number of different signal types. The signals may be in the base-band or the pass-band, single-carrier or multi-carrier, frequency hopping or non-hopping, broad-pulse or narrow-pulse etc. In a typical setting this algorithm system provides an error rate of 3/100 at a signal to noise ratio of 0 dB. This algorithm system gives the time frequency detection ratio that may be used to determine if the detected signal falls in Class Single-Carrier of Class Multi-Carrier. Additionally this algorithm system may be used for a number of different applications such as multiple signal identification, finding the basis functions of the received signal and the like.

Abstract: A compact, purely mechanical wing deployment assisting mechanism uses torsion springs and lever arms to apply a deploying force to a guidance wing during its initial deployment through a wing slot in a rocket or missile, thereby assisting the wing to burst through a cover seal protecting the wing slot. The wings are then fully deployed by centrifugal force. Various embodiments include two “extreme duty” springs and two lever arms per wing, working in parallel. Embodiments provide a total of at least 24 pounds of force per wing at the end of a spring travel of 0.30 inches. In some embodiments, the entire mechanism weighs less than 0.5 pounds and/or occupies less than 2.5 cubic inches per wing. In embodiments, an assembled group, including two springs and two lever arms, is located between each pair of wings, whereby each assembled group applies one lever arm to each adjoining wing.

Abstract: Each of a number of gateway network radios operates with a transmission protocol of an associated one of plural incompatible communication networks. Each network radio has an audio terminal for producing first audio signals detected from transmissions of user radios in its associated network, and a microphone terminal for receiving second audio signals for transmission to the user radios. A voice bridging gateway server has multiple ports each corresponding to one of the networks for coupling to the network radio associated with the one network. Each port receives the first audio signals from the audio terminal of the associated network radio, and produces the second audio signals for applying to the microphone terminal of the network radio. The server implements a private branch exchange application whereby user radios in a given communication network can be voice bridged with user radios in a selected one or more of the other networks.

Abstract: A system for providing situational awareness outside a temporary incident area network includes a prioritized connection module for connecting a mesh network at the incident area to one of a plurality of available communications channels, with the selection based not only on the availability of a communications channel but also on the associated expense, speed, reliability or bandwidth, so that high bandwidth traffic such as video and pictures can be reliably sent from the incident area to a location outside of the incident area. In one embodiment switching to a satellite phone network bypasses problems with terrestrial networks such as cell phone networks and landlines which may be down.
