Abstract: A broadband spectral power generator in a multimode optical fiber utilizes a standard multimode fiber that is coiled. A plate is placed on the coiled fiber and a force is applied to compresses the coiled fiber and thereby increase the interactions between the compressed windings and induce modal mixing and birefringence in the fiber. In addition, the compression causes additional non-linear processes to be excited and occur in the compressed fiber coil to generate more broadband light. This allows for better “mixing” of the spatial beam in the multimode fiber coil and allows for the various modes to overlap. The multimode fiber coil is made of silica, silicate, germinate, phosphate, fluoride, chalcogenide, or telluride. The compressed coiled fiber may be driven by a laser providing more than one wavelength output and this greatly increases the amount of nonlinear mixing in the fiber for a greatly enhanced spectral coverage.

  • Publication number: 20130342361
Abstract: What is provided is recording capability for each of the modules utilized by the first responders and other personnel within the area of the incident, with the stored information at each of the first responders' modules being read out through the ad hoc network, where it can be uploaded to storage. The stored information can be displayed at an incident commander work station in real time to give the incident commander a realistic view of the timeline and the severity of the incident, as well as the response. The use of the ad hoc network permits offloading stored information from each of the first responders' modules so as to free up storage within the modules. By providing storage at every node of the ad hoc network, one has access to a timeline of the actions at the incident as well as redundancy, which enhances the memories and observational skills of the first responders.

  • Publication number: 20130335812
Abstract: A system and method for producing Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) is disclosed. A single optical fiber or Raman oscillator is optically pumped by a pump laser of sufficient power to generate SRS to generate several Stokes shifts of energy. This generates a multi-wavelength output or a single wavelength with several stokes energy shifts from the pump wavelength. A selective, monolithic-coated Raman fiber oscillator laser is utilized to increase the efficiency of frequency shifting by providing frequency-specific feedback at both facets of a free space coupled optical fiber oscillator. Frequencies that lie several bands away from the primary pump frequency may be efficiently achieved in a fiber oscillator by re-circulating the required stokes-shifted frequencies via selective high-reflection coatings. By re-circulating the intra-band stokes frequencies, the required intensities in each respective frequency will be increased, thereby dropping the respective Raman threshold in the optical fiber.

  • Patent number: 8612178
Abstract: A specific emitter identification (SEI) method and apparatus is capable of identifying and tracking objects within a geographical area of interest wherein the system and method has not been preprogrammed to look for particular signals. The system and method receives all of the emitted electromagnetic signals emitted from area of interest. The system and method next performs high order statistical analysis on the received signals and determines which signals emanate from possible targets of interest and which likely emanate from background clutter/noise by comparing the relative degrees of Gaussianness of the signals (for example using entropy measurements). The least Gaussian signals are deemed to likely be signals from potential targets of interest while those which are more Gaussian are deemed to be likely from background clutter or noise.

  • Patent number: 8584585
Abstract: An inertial delay mechanism for use in an explosive projectile is provided. The delay mechanism consists of an inertial delay fuse that is precise, doesn't require sensitive primary explosives and doesn't utilize electronic circuitry. The inertial delay fuse includes a free sliding charge element that strikes an anvil located opposite to the sliding charge element. A delay gap is provided between the sliding charge element and the anvil. Upon impact, the sliding charge element slides forward and impacts the anvil, thereby inducing a shock wave in an initiator charge that subsequently results in detonation of main charges. The design is mechanically simple and robust enough to withstand severe g-loading forces that occur during firing and penetration of a projectile.

  • Patent number: 8587467
Abstract: A method for determining locations of a moving emitter is disclosed. Initially, a set of emitter pulses is collected when a collector platform moves over a collection baseline. In addition, the time and location of the collection platform are recorded each time an emitter pulse is collected. A set of time-tagged pulse time-of-arrival (TOA) values is then generated by associating a recorded collection time value to each of the collected emitter pulses. Next, a set of time-tagged and position-tagged pulse TOA values is generated by associating a recorded collection location value to each of the time-tagged pulse TOA values. Finally, a set of location values and velocity values of a moving emitter is estimated based on the time-tagged and position-tagged pulse TOA values.

  • Patent number: 8586417
Abstract: An electronic device package includes a substrate and wire columns arranged in groups about a neutral stress point of the substrate. The height of the wire columns is substantially uniform for the plural groups of wire columns, and a length of at least one of the wire columns is greater than the uniform height. A method of fabricating an electronic device package having a column grid array includes applying two templates on wire columns of the column grid array and bending at least one wire column to increase its length while maintaining a uniform height for the column grid array. In another aspect, an electronic device package substrate includes wire columns having at least one non-uniformity in lengths of the columns, and the length of a wire column corresponds to a distance of that wire column from the neutral stress point of the substrate.

  • Patent number: 8583714
Abstract: A DDS system is disclosed that is configured to provide a variable clock delay that allows timing of data coming out of the ROM to be adjusted. In one example case, a DDS system is provided that includes a ROM for storing phase-to-amplitude conversion data and generating digital amplitude values corresponding to respective digital phase values, and delay circuitry for adjusting timing of data output by the ROM to compensate for propagation delay of the DDS system. The delay circuitry may include, for instance, delay elements that can be selected alone or in combination to adjust the timing. The timing can be adjusted, for example, by adjusting delay of a clock signal that clocks one or more ROM pipeline registers. The system may include a phase accumulator and DAC, and adjusting the timing may include adjusting delay of a clock signal that clocks one or more DAC pipeline registers.
