Abstract: Polyalkenylsuccinic acid derivatives are prepared by reacting oligo- or polyolefins having a number average molecular weight (M.sub.N) of from 500 to 10,000 with maleic acid derivatives I ##STR1## where R and R', independently of one another, are each hydroxyl, lower alkyl or halogen or together are oxygen, at elevated temperatures by a process in which effective amounts of free radical acceptors, such as oxygen, are present in the gas phase and in the liquid phase of the reacting system during the reaction. These polyalkenylsuccinic acid derivatives are suitable, after additional imidation, amidation or esterification, as fuel and lubricant additives.
Abstract: In the process for the continuous preparation of alkyl esters of (meth)acrylic acid by reacting (meth)acrylic acid with monohydric alkanols having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the presence of an acid esterification catalyst in a reaction zone, there is discharged from the reaction zone a product mixture which comprises the alkyl (meth)acrylate formed, the catalyst and the by-products formed during the course of the esterification having boiling points higher than that of the alkyl (meth)acrylate, and from which the alkyl (meth)acrylate is separated by distillation in a separation zone. The product mixture discharged from the reaction zone is fed to a rectification unit (I), in this unit the product mixture discharged is separated by rectification into at least one product (I) comprising the alkyl ester of (meth)acrylic acid and a product (II) comprising the catalyst, the product (I) is fed to a further rectification unit (II) and in this the alkyl ester of (meth)acrylic acid is separated off by rectification.

Abstract: There is now provided a closed cell rigid polyisocyanate based foam blown with a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 hydrofluorocarbon and formic acid as blowing agents, which possesses a uniform density gradient varying by not more than 10 percent. There is also now provided a polyol composition and a froth foaming mixture having good flow by employing a polyol and formic acid in the presence of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 hydrofluorocarbon having a boiling point of 300K or less as co-blowing agents. The polyol composition advantageously has an average OH number of less than 400 and an average functionality of greater than 4, which when reacted with the isocyanate in the presence of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 hydrofluorocarbon, yields a rigid closed cell polyisocyanate based dimensionally stable foam having a fine cell structure.

Abstract: Multicomponent fibers and methods and apparatus for producing the same are provided such that an inter-domain boundary layer is interposed between distinct domains formed of incompatible polymers so as to minimize (if not eliminate entirely) separation of the domains at their interfacial boundary. The inter-domain boundary layer is formed of a heterogeneous mixture of the polymers forming the respective adjacent domains between which the boundary layer is interposed. The inter-boundary layer will most preferably include rivulets or fingers of each polymer forming the adjacent domains which interlock with one another in a randomly tortuous manner. These different polymer rivulets thereby effectively increase the surface area and mechanical interlocking at the interfacial boundary between the fiber domains thereby increasing the adhesion therebetween.
