Abstract: A method for preparing compression molded or pressed lignocellulosic articles is disclosed. The method involves forming a binder resin by combining a polyisocyanate component with a parting agent and preferably a synergist. The parting agent is the reaction product of an isocyanate compound and an isocyanate-reactive compound of the general structure R—(ao)n—Y where: R is a hydrophobic group containing alkyl, alkaryl, polyaryl, or siloxane moieties; (ao) is an alkylene oxide or mixture of alkylene oxides; n is from 1 to 25; and Y represents a monofunctional isocyanate-reactive group. A resinated lignocellulosic mixture is formed by combining the binder resin with lignocellulosic particles. Then a compression molded or pressed lignocellulosic article is formed by compressing the resinated lignocellulosic mixture at an elevated temperature and under pressure.

Abstract: Continuous anionic polymerization and melt-spinning of a polycaprolactam includes forming a reaction mixture by bringing at least two streams of liquid caprolactam respectively containing a polymerization initiator and co-initiator into contact with one another, and then subjecting the reaction mixture to anionic polymerization reaction conditions to obtain a molten polycaprolactam. The molten polycaprolactam is the directly (i.e., without intermediate solidification) transferred to, and extruded through, a fiber-forming orifice of a spinneret to form a fiber thereof. One exemplary system to achieve such continuous anionic polymerization and melt-spinning of polycaprolactam includes a mixer for receiving and mixing at least two streams of liquid caprolactam respectively containing a polymerization initiator and co-initiator, and a reactor and melt-spinning apparatus downstream of the mixer.

Abstract: A continuous alkoxylation process for the production of polyether polyols is disclosed. The process comprises the use of a plurality of reaction modules each having an outer tube and an inner tube with annular chamber between them. A spiral reaction tube is spaced from the inner tube and winds around the inner tube within the annular chamber. The spiral reaction tube includes an inlet and an outlet, each of which extend through said outer tube. A heat exchange medium flows through the annular chamber and controls the reaction temperature in the spiral reaction tube. The process comprises continuously forming an initial reaction mixture of at least one [alkaline] alkylene oxide and an initiator having at least one reactive hydrogen which is reactive to the [alkaline] alkylene oxide.
Abstract: The present invention provides a coating composition containing 1) a carbamate-functional resin having in its structure a hyperbranched or star polyol core, a first chain extension based on a polycarboxylic acid or anbydride, a second chain extension based on an epoxy containing compound, and having carbamate functional groups on the core, the second chain extension, or both; and 2) a second resin containing functional groups reactive with the carbamate groups on the carbamate-functional resin. In one embodiment, the coating compositions are used as a cloarcoat to be applied over a basecoat to form a composite coating. The compositions exhibit a combination of desirable properties, such as scratch and mar resistance, resistance to environmental etch, good intercoat adhesion, and high solids.

Abstract: A polyester polyol composition comprising a phthalic anhydride-initiated polyester polyol, a C4-C6 hydrocarbon blowing agent, and an oxyethylated fatty acid or fatty alcohol compatibilizing agent having an HLB of from about 7 to about 12. The blowing agent is soluble in the polyol composition, thereby reducing the risks associated with such blowing agents in processes for making rigid polymer foam articles and providing rigid foams having good dimensional stability and improved insulation properties.

Abstract: An article having a metallic surface treated with polymeric complexing agent is described. Particularly suitable polymeric complexing agents are phosphonoalkylated polyethyleneimines and/or carboxyalkylated polyethyleneimines and/or vinylimidazole polymers. As a rule, the treated metallic surface forms the total inner surface or a part of the inner surface of a process apparatus or of a container. The surface is protected by the treatment, in particular from the adhesion of polymer.

Abstract: A process for preparing high-purity phytantriol, that includes rectifying the phytantriol which is obtained and is contaminated with lower and/or higher boiling byproducts under medium vacuum in rectification columns containing metal cloth packings with ordered structure using channel liquid distributors with a minimum of 500 drip points/m2, which are arranged at an angle of 90° to the cloth layers of the packing elements located directly below the distributors, in which 2 or more of the packing elements underneath the liquid distributors have only a small height, which ensure absolute exclusion of air and a strictly adiabatic procedure.
The preparation of high-purity phytantriol takes place particularly advantageously when the phytantriol which is contaminated with byproducts is a phytantriol which has been obtained by reacting isophytol with performic acid and subsequently hydrolyzing the product formed in the reaction with alkaline agents in a manner known per se.
