Abstract: In the preparation of esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid by esterification with alcohols, the interfering deposits formed on the apparatus parts by relatively high molecular weight by-products can be avoided, removed or lessened by allowing a liquid partly or wholly consisting of the alcohol used for the esterification to act on the deposits, fouled apparatus parts or on the surfaces of the apparatus parts on which deposits are easily formed, with preference being given to wetting the deposits or surfaces using suitable nozzles or cleaning sprayers.

Abstract: Proteins to be stabilized are incorporated between two domains of the gene III protein of a bacteriophage. A mixture of phages with a large repertoire of mutants of the protein to be stabilized in the gene III protein is treated with proteases. The phages which present the least stable variants of the protein lose their infectivity fastest, whereas those whose genes code for stabilized variants of the protein retain their infectivity longest. Infection of bacterial cells with the phages treated with proteases and multiplication thereof leads to enrichment of the phages which comprise genes of stabilized variants of the mutagenized protein. The sequences of the most stable variants of the protein are obtained in this way from the genomes of the phages remaining after several rounds of phage cultivation, proteolysis and reinfection.

Abstract: Transgenic animals carrying a transgene comprising a nucleic acid molecule encoding protein useful for regulating the expression of genes in eukaryotic cells and organisms in a highly controlled manner are disclosed. In the regulatory system of the invention, transcription of a tet operator-linked nucleotide sequence is stimulated by a transcriptional activator fusion protein composed of two polypeptides, a first polypeptide which binds to tet operator sequences in the presence of tetracycline operatively linked to a second polypeptide activates transcription in eukaryotic cells. In a preferred embodiment, the transgene encoding the transcriptional activator fusion protein is integrated at a predetermined location within the chromosome of the transgenic animal.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for resolving racemates of alkoxy-substituted primary amines by reacting with an ester in the presence of a lipase and subsequently separating the optically active amide which is formed from the unreacted optically active amine. This is followed where appropriate by hydrolysis of the optically active amide, separation of the optically active amine produced thereby from the acid from which the ester is derived, racemization and recycling of the unwanted enantiomer of the amine, and esterification and recycling of the acid.
