  • Publication number: 20160313331
Abstract: An assay for infection with one or more herpes simplex viruses that comprises a) dividing an antibody-containing serum sample into at least three serum subsamples, and b) separately incubating each with a physical matrix of cell antigens from i) uninfected cells, (ii) HSV-1-infected cells, or (iii) HSV-2-infected cells to form at least three serum subsample admixtures so that antibodies present in each admixture can immunoreact to form matrix-bound antibodies and at least three preadsorbed serum subsample portions. Each preadsorbed serum subsample portion is incubated with a mixture of matrix-bound antigens from cells uninfected by HSV-1 or HSV-2, infected by each of HSV-1 and by HSV-2 to permit antibodies to immunoreact with antigens present to form three matrix-bound immunoreactants. The amount of each immunoreaction is determined, and reaction amounts are prognostic for whether the subject whose serum was tested is infected by one, both, or neither of HSV-1 and HSV-2.

  • Patent number: 9461832
Abstract: The present technology comprises a method and apparatus for a routing protocol for a router including an apparatus and method for distance vector multicast routing. The method and apparatus as disclosed and claimed offers a new interpretation of the routing information stored in a DVMRP routing table. This interpretation relates to the knowledge of the locations of a multicast source router and the routers connected to hosts with group members in a DVMRP domain. The methodology exploits this knowledge to create two conditional packet forwarding checks, based on pseudo-diameter and super-pseudo-diameter respectively, and used these conditions to extend the two phases of the existing DVMRP to improve its performance from the viewpoint of much better utilization of bandwidth.

  • Patent number: 9451745
Abstract: Plant canopy temperature and multi-spectral reflectance are measured with a wireless multi-band sensor, and the temperature data are qualified and the spectral reflectance measurements are classified. The multi-band sensor includes sensors for measuring plant canopy temperature radiation and spectral reflectance over five bands, a microprocessor to receive and store measured data, and a wireless transmitter for transmitting data from the microprocessor to a remote receiver, all enclosed within a single housing. The data are used to detect variations in spectral signature due to plant stress (e.g., disease, water stress) and due to soil background and to qualify temperature data accordingly.

  • Patent number: 9388087
Abstract: Liquid anti-oxidants made by mixing specific chemical compositions disclosed herein, followed by thorough stirring so that a homogeneous blend of colloidal-like solutions are obtained. Such liquid anti-oxidants are applied to the surface of the carbon-carbon composite that is needed to be protected against oxidation by brushing, dipping, spraying, or other painting techniques, and allowed sufficient time for the anti-oxidants to penetrate into the subsurface region of the composite and to let dry in a dry atmosphere. The coated carbon/carbon composites can be heat treated (or charred) at a temperature of about approximately 650 to 950° C. for a time period of about approximately one to seven hours. The above painting/heat treating processes can be repeated one to three or more times in order to obtain sufficient anti-oxidant char on or below the surface to a certain depth of the composite.

  • Patent number: 9126205
Abstract: An apparatus and method for sensor and control system, which automatically adjusts a product splitter position of a full-scale spiral. An electrical conductivity-based automation system is described and claimed herein and has been successfully developed and demonstrated as illustrated herein. The system includes a sensor and a microprocessor based and controlled servo or gear motor that is utilized to adjust the splitter of an operating coal/mineral spiral based on the readings of the sensor. The device as described and claimed herein converts a traditional coal spiral to an automated system for controlling the splitter thereby giving the spiral unit the ability to automatically adjust a key process variable, i.e., its splitter position, in real time as and when the feed coal or other mineral property changes to maintain the performance of the spiral at the optimum level.

  • Patent number: 9019570
Abstract: A method, system, and algorithm detects graphite responses in optical mark recognition documents using inexpensive visible-light scanners. The invention is invariant to the numerous background colors and artwork in typical optical mark recognition documents. A superposition of a graphite response image and a background image is modeled. The background image in turn is modeled as a superposition of screening, artwork, lines, and machine text components. A sequence of image processing operations and a pattern recognition algorithm is used to isolate the graphite response image from a test document by systematically removing the components of the background image. The image processing operations consist of grayscale and color segmentation and the application of the Hough transform. Components that are not removed by image processing operations are identified by calculating their texture features, and removed using a multivariate Gaussian classifier.

  • Patent number: 8979212
Abstract: This invention refers to innovative water sprays applications to significantly improve coal and quartz dust control around a continuous miner. Significant dust control is achieved through utilizing different types of sprays at locations on the top and sides of the miner chassis to create water curtains or shrouds of water around zones of high dust concentration and zones of high concentration dust transport. This is called “multiple lines of defense” spray system (MLD.) This invention also provides a method of reducing dust around a continuous miner by configuring a spray system, located at the top or sides of the cutter boom, thereby improving control of respirable dust.
