Abstract: Devices, systems, and methods for imaging and measuring deflections in structures such as railroad rail are disclosed. One exemplary embodiment relates to a vision system having a high-speed, visible-light imaging camera and an evaluation unit configured for analyzing images from the camera to detect geometric variations in the structure. In a second example, additional sensors are used to identify the wheel location(s) in the same reference frame as the measurement system. In analyzing structures such as railroad track rail, the imaging camera can be coupled to a moving rail vehicle and configured for generating images of the rail as the vehicle moves along the track.

Abstract: In accordance with the present teachings, a method of producing composite having a 3A Q3D reinforcement phase is disclosed. The method of producing the composite provides producing a three-dimensionally woven configuration where a first fiber from a first sheet of reinforcement phase is interwoven or mechanically linked with at least one of an adjacent second layer and then back into the first sheet. The linking fibers are passed between layers at an acute angle generally less than about 10 degrees. The method includes impregnating the woven construction with a curable polymer such as epoxy.

Abstract: The present invention describes microRNAs that regulate the differentiation, proliferation and death of cardiac and skeletal muscles cells. These molecules represent unique targets in the developmental pathways of muscle cells. They also can be used as active agents to induce differentiation in progenitor cells, and their down-regulation permits the maintenance and expansion of progenitor cell populations.

Abstract: The invention is generally directed to conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)-rich vegetable oil production from linoleic rich oils by heterogeneous catalysis. A heterogeneous catalytic vacuum distillation process is used under high temperature conditions to isomerize linoleic acid in triacylglyceride vegetable oils to CLA to produce CLA-rich oils. After processing, the catalyst may be removed by filtration or centrifugation to obtain high quality, CLA-rich oils. The CLA-rich oils may then serve as a potent and bioactive nutraceutical and can be incorporated into various food products, such as a CLA-rich dressing, margarine or chips.

Abstract: An ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) for the detection of trace gaseous molecular compounds dissolved or suspended in a carrier gas, particularly in ambient air, without preconcentration or the trapping of analyte particles. The IMS of the invention comprises an ionization volume of greater than 5 cm3 and preferably greater than 100 cm3. The larger size ionizers of this invention enable analysis of trace (<1 ppb) of sample compounds in the gas phase. To facilitate efficient ion motion through the large volume ionization and reaction regions of the IMS, an electric field gradient can be provided in the ionization region or in both the ionization and reaction regions. The systems can be implemented with radioactive ionization sources, corona discharge ion sources or ions can be formed by photoionization.

Abstract: Non-invasive methods of detecting and providing an early diagnosis of cancer, in particular breast cancer are provided herein. The methods include obtaining a sample, suitably an ocular wash sample, from a subject and determining the level of ?-Defensin 1, ?-Defensin 2 and/or ?-Defensin 3 in the sample. Increased levels of any of these proteins as compared to a negative control or non-cancerous subject are indicative of cancer in the subject from which the sample was obtained. Kits for performing the methods described herein are also provided.
