    Abstract: The variable compression ratio piston system for an engine adjusts the compression ratio of the engine piston by way of hydraulic fluid distributed between a pair of chambers formed in a pair of bores receiving control pistons mechanically coupled to the engine piston. A control valve selectively permits flow of hydraulic fluid between the high compression ratio line and the low compression ratio line. A variable force solenoid controlled by an engine control unit preferably controls the position of the control valve. The position of the spool controls whether hydraulic fluid can flow toward the first chamber, toward the second chamber, or not at all. Flow of hydraulic fluid is actuated by alternating forces from inertial and combustion forces on a crankshaft from operation of the engine.

Furthermore, a recirculation slot may define an airflow pathway between the recirculation cavity and the compressor wheel. Additionally, the compressor housing may include an angled shroud support extending radially through the recirculation cavity from the exterior surface of the shroud portion to the interior surface of the compressor housing. The angled shroud support may be spaced an axial distance away from the recirculation slot to reduce turbulence in the airflow as the airflow moves from the recirculation cavity to the compressor wheel.

The inlet volute (76) accelerates cooling air that is fed into the inlet volute (76) and directs the cooling air into the motor chamber (54). The cooling air travels in an axial direction through the motor chamber (54) from the inlet volute (76) to the outlet volute (78), thereby cooling the electric motor (52). The outlet volute (78) decelerates the cooling air and directs the cooling air out of the motor chamber (54).
