Patent number: 9026048Abstract: A near field communications (NFC) device is disclosed that detects a presence of another NFC capable device within its magnetic field. The NFC device observes signal metrics of an observed detection signal at various intervals. The NFC device determines a statistical relationship based upon at least two first signal metrics from among the signal metrics to determine an estimate of at least one second signal metric from among the signal metrics. The NFC device compares a difference between the estimate of the signal metric of the at least one second signal metric and the at least one second signal metric. The NFC capable device makes a first determination that another NFC device is present within its magnetic field when the difference indicates that the at least one second signal metric is non-linearly related to the at least two first signal metrics.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 2011Date of Patent: May 5, 2015Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Philip Stewart Royston, Steven Deane Hall, Brima Ibrahim

Patent number: 9026046Abstract: A near field communications (NFC) device is disclosed that load modulates and regulates a radio frequency (RF) signal. The NFC device includes a rectifier that rectifies the RF signal to provide a direct current voltage. The NFC device also includes a modulator that modulates a data signal. The modulator provides a first voltage when the data signal is at a first level and provides a second voltage when the data signal is at a second level. The NFC device utilizes a regulator to regulate and to load modulate the RF signal. The regulator adjusts an impedance based upon a comparison of the DC voltage provided by the regulator to the first voltage provided by the modulator for the data signal at the first level or to the second voltage provided by the modulator for the data signal at the second level.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 2011Date of Patent: May 5, 2015Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventor: Alastair Lefley

Publication number: 20150117508Abstract: A transmitter's operation is characterized using components having relatively low cost and low complexity. A device includes comparator(s) that compare a transmitter's analog output to predetermined level(s) to generate count(s) associated with analog output range bin(s). Each of the predetermined levels is associated with a corresponding one of the analog output range bins. A transfer function of the transmitter is generated using the comparison count values associated with the analog output range bin(s). A histogram may be generated from the comparison count values associated with the various analog output range bins. An equalizer is implemented to process data that will be transmitted by the transmitter. The equalizer uses equalizer parameter(s) that are selected based on the characterization of the transmitter (e.g., its transfer function, its histogram, etc.). The equalizer may use default or start up parameters until the transmitter's operation is characterized.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 26, 2013Publication date: April 30, 2015Applicant: BROADCOM CORPORATIONInventors: Ramon Alejandro Gomez, Bruce Joseph Currivan, Lin He, Thomas Joseph Kolze, Franciscus Maria Leonardus van der Goes, Jun Wang

Publication number: 20150117498Abstract: Code detection to assist a symbol-level equalizer in a receiver is described. In an embodiment, code detection uses adaptive Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filtering to determine spreading code usage information and active code channels in a received signal. The spreading code usage information indicates if a spreading code associated with a code channel is among spreading codes used in the received signal. In another embodiment, the spreading code usage information is determined based on a forgetting factor associated with the filtering of a symbol power associated with the code channel.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 24, 2013Publication date: April 30, 2015Applicant: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Hou-Shin CHEN, Fu-Hsuan CHIU

Publication number: 20150117470Abstract: Aspects of efficient signal compression format schemes are described. In various embodiments, samples are grouped into one or more blocks. One or more scaling factors are determined for the samples in the one or more blocks. In some cases, a block scaling factor is determined for each block. Further, in some embodiments, if a unique scaling factor exists among samples in a block, the position of the sample is identified. In turn, sign extension bits are scaled from the one or more blocks, and samples in the one or more blocks are quantized. In one embodiment, based on a number of sign extension bits scaled from the block and whether the unique scaling factor exists, a scaling code word is encoded for the block. In other embodiments, implicity, adaptive scaling, and/or adaptive quantization, for example, are used to increase the performance of the compression schemes.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 4, 2013Publication date: April 30, 2015Applicant: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Timothy Andrew Ryan, Shue-Lee Chang, Victor Simileysky

Publication number: 20150117569Abstract: Phase rotation for preambles within multiple user, multiple access, and/or MIMO wireless communications. An appropriately designed phase rotation vector and/or appropriately designed cyclic shift delays (CSDs) are applied to respective sub-band components of the preamble. With appropriately designed CSDs, certain fields within the preamble are not modified. For example, a legacy short training field (L-STF) of the preamble is not changed when using appropriately designed CSDs. The respective CSDs may be implemented as integer multiples of a common CSD (e.g., 0×CSD, 1×CSD, 2×CSD, etc. such that one of the values of such a CSD vector may be zero [0], another may be the common CSD itself, etc.). Also, by employing an appropriately designed phase rotation vector and integer multiples of a CSD to a preamble, the respective peak to average power ratio (PAPR) between different respective fields within the preamble may be minimized.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 30, 2014Publication date: April 30, 2015Applicant: BROADCOM CORPORATIONInventors: Jun Zheng, Min Chuin Hoo, Vinko Erceg

Publication number: 20150121494Abstract: A collocated device functioning as a configurator can use short and long button activations to enter a configuration state, open a timing window, and force client devices currently joined to a network to rejoin the network. If the collocated device functioning as a configurator is unconfigured, a short (or long) button activation can initiate a configuration sequence. A short button activation on that same collocated device, once configured, can cause the device to open a configurator timing window, during which one or more devices can be provided the information necessary to securely communicate on a network. A long (or short) button activation can be used to force all currently connected client devices, or rejoin the network using a new Service Set Identifier (SSID) or passphrase.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 30, 2014Publication date: April 30, 2015Applicant: BROADCOM CORPORATIONInventors: Henry Ptasinski, Edward Carter, Manoj Thawani, Manas Deb, Jeff Vadasz, Mahesh Iyer

Patent number: 9020067Abstract: Distortion and aliasing reduction for digital to analog conversion. Synthesis of one or more distortion terms made based on a digital signal (e.g., one or more digital codewords) is performed in accordance with digital to analog conversion.
