Patent number: 9379868Abstract: Subsequent association identifier (AID) update within single user, multiple user, multiple access, and/or MIMO wireless communications. Even while a given communication device maintains continuous association within a given communication system, a unique identifier associated with that particular communication device may be updated. For example, considering and implementation including an access point (AP) and a number of wireless stations (STAs), even while at least some of the STAs remain in association with the AP, the respective unique identifiers associated with one or more of those STAs may be updated (e.g., the respective AID values associated with one or more of those STAs may be updated). For example, after an initial assignment of unique identifiers associated with a group of respective communication devices within the communication network, the unique identifier associated with one or more of those respective communication devices may be updated or changed after the initial assignment.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 2012Date of Patent: June 28, 2016Assignee: BROADCOM CORPORATIONInventor: Qi Wang

Patent number: 9379825Abstract: A new protocol uses a trigger message to identify one or more symbols transmitted between a first and a second communication device. The first device generates and transmits a trigger message to the second device. This process may be initiated based on the first device receiving a measurement initiation message from another device (e.g., such as the second device or another device within the system). Then, the first device transmits a signal that includes those one or more symbols to the second device. Before or during transmission, the first device generates a first capture of those one or more symbols. After receipt of the transmission from the first device, the second device performs a second capture of those one or more symbols identified within the trigger message. Then, any device having the first and second captures can determine a characterization of the communication pathway between the first and second devices.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2014Date of Patent: June 28, 2016Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Bruce Joseph Currivan, Roger Wayne Fish, Lisa Voigt Denney, Niki Roberta Pantelias

Patent number: 9379882Abstract: Systems and methods are provided to use of out-of-band (OOB) channels for the transport of network-synchronization signals and network control information. These OOB channels transport synchronization and control channels over low-frequency bands outside of the frequency bands used for the data channels. Locating expensive network-synchronization functions in the optical network unit (ONU) and sharing the derived synchronization signals among multiple downstream customer premises equipment (CPE) devices results in cost savings and provides a means for maintaining a continuous, end-to-end synchronization reference, even during periods when the data channels on the copper network segment are in an energy-efficiency mode (e.g., a low-power and/or sleep mode).Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 2014Date of Patent: June 28, 2016Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Lowell D. Patent number: 9379741Abstract: Memory depth optimization in communications systems with ensemble PHY layer requirements. Memory depth, for one or more modules in a communication device, is managed based on a limited amount of provisioned hardware. For example, each of a number of various modules within a communication device is configurable to operate at various memory depths. Considered together, various sets or profiles of operational parameters (e.g., associated with particular settings for each of the various modules within the communication device), may be employed to configure the communication device to operate in accordance with one of a variety of operational modes. For example, in a first operational mode, latency may be minimized (e.g., using shorted codewords, shorter interleaver depth, etc.), whereas in a second operational mode, a higher latency may be tolerated but with an expectation of much lower error rates (e.g., achieved using more powerful ECC, longer interleaver depth, etc.).Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 2009Date of Patent: June 28, 2016Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventor: Thomas J. Transceiver self-diagnostics for electromagnetic interference (EMI) degradation in balanced channels
Patent number: 9379772Abstract: Transceiver self-diagnostics for electromagnetic interference (EMI) degradation in balanced channels. Selective operation of transmitting a common mode signal from a communication link implemented for supporting differential signaling, and appropriate processing of any detected signal energy, such as that corresponding to differential signal energy, provides a measure of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) corresponding to the communication link. Comparison of detected differential signal energy to one or more thresholds may provide indication of whether or not the communication link is balanced or unbalanced, a degree or margin with which the communication link is compliant in accordance with EMC in accordance with one or more protocols, standards, or recommended practices. Multiple successive measurements of detected differential signal energy may be used to determine a trend of performance, such as whether or not the communication link is trending toward imbalance, failure, or noncompliance.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2015Date of Patent: June 28, 2016Assignee: BROADCOM CORPORATIONInventors: Scott R.
