  • Patent number: 8335316
Abstract: One embodiment provides a system for decrypting data frames in an Ethernet passive optical network (EPON). During operation, the system maintains a local cipher counter at a local node, and receives from a remote node a data frame which is encrypted based on a remote input block and a session key. The remote input block is constructed based on the remote cipher counter and a remote block counter. The system updates the local cipher counter based on a received field located in a preamble of the data frame, truncates the local cipher counter by discarding a number of least significant bits, and constructs for the received data frame a local input block based on the truncated local cipher counter, the received field, and a local block counter. The system then decrypts the data frame based on the local input block and the session key.

  • Patent number: 8334721
Abstract: An upstream amplifier is integrated on a substrate with a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) to form an integrated circuit. In an embodiment, a low-pass filter is also integrated on the substrate. The output signal level of the upstream amplifier is controllable. In embodiments, fine adjustments are made to the output signal level of the upstream amplifier by varying a bias current of the DAC. A software control bit is used to switch between a power-on mode of operation and a power-down mode of operation. The upstream amplifier transmits in a burst mode. The power consumption of the upstream amplifier scales with the amplifier's output signal level. A high degree of matching is attained between the positive and negative paths of the upstream amplifier. This provides high immunity from common-mode disturbances such as substrate noise, clock spurs, and glitches caused by a gain change.

  • Patent number: 8335226
Abstract: A communication system includes a supervisory node (e.g., a headend) and one or more remote nodes (e.g., cable modems). The supervisory node or a remote node monitors a characteristic associated with the communication system. Remote node transmits an upstream communication among a plurality of physical upstream channels based on the characteristic. The average transmit power used to transmit the upstream communication among the plurality of physical upstream channels is no greater than the average transmit power that would be necessary to transmit the upstream communication using a single physical upstream channel at a lower data rate.

  • Publication number: 20120314750
Abstract: Embodiments of an apparatus and method for selective SC equalization are provided. Multipath propagation in a communication channel often changes, and the severity of multipath propagation is often below worst case conditions supported by a SC communication device. When multipath propagation is less severe and below worst conditions, the use of FDE in a SC receiver to mitigate ISI can be overkill and can result in excess power being consumed. The excess power consumption can be attributed to the general inability of the structure used to perform FDE to scale in terms of performance with channel conditions. Embodiments of the apparatus and method for performing selective equalization in a SC receiver allow either FDE or TDE to be performed based on the current multipath propagation conditions of a communication channel. In general, TDE is used in place of FDE to conserve power when channel conditions permit.

  • Publication number: 20120314865
Abstract: NFC communication is utilized to provide methods, apparatus and systems for increasing the security of cryptographic keys and cryptographic processes. For the encryption and decryption of a message, public key cryptography requires the use of a pair of keys, i.e., the public key and the private key. Various embodiments of the present invention provide storage of information needed for one or more aspects of encrypting and/or decrypting messages, wherein that information is made available through an NFC communications interface. An NFC-enabled device is brought into physical proximity with a computational platform that is executing, or otherwise providing access to, an email client. Once the NFC-enabled device and the computational platform are within NFC communication range of each other, transfer of information needed to set up an encryption and/or decryption process takes place.

Abstract: Embodiments for processing client traffic in a wireless device operated in hotspot mode are provided. Embodiments enable downlink and uplink client traffic flows within the wireless device that reduce the load on the application processor (AP) of the wireless device. In an embodiment, client traffic flows bypass the AP entirely allowing the AP to enter a power saving mode during hotspot sessions. This results in increased battery lifetime and reduced power consumption of the wireless device. In addition, the hotspot session quality is improved by the reduced latency resulting from bypassing the AP.

  • Publication number: 20120314794
Abstract: Transceiver self-diagnostics for electromagnetic interference (EMI) degradation in balanced channels. Selective operation of transmitting a common mode signal from a communication link implemented for supporting differential signaling, and appropriate processing of any detected signal energy, such as that corresponding to differential signal energy, provides a measure of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) corresponding to the communication link. Comparison of detected differential signal energy to one or more thresholds may provide indication of whether or not the communication link is balanced or unbalanced, a degree or margin with which the communication link is compliant in accordance with EMC in accordance with one or more protocols, standards, or recommended practices. Multiple successive measurements of detected differential signal energy may be used to determine a trend of performance, such as whether or not the communication link is trending toward imbalance, failure, or noncompliance.

Abstract: Header encoding for SC and/or OFDM signaling using shortening, puncturing, and/or repetition in accordance with encoding header information within a frame to be transmitted via a communication channel employs different respective puncturing patterns as applied to different portions thereof. For example, a first puncturing pattern is applied to a first portion of the frame, and a second puncturing pattern is applied to a second portion of the frame (the second portion may be a repeated version of the first portion). Shortening (e.g., by padding 0-valued bits thereto) may be made to header information bits before they undergo encoding (e.g., in an LDPC encoder). One or both of the information bits and parity/redundancy bits output from the encoder undergo selective puncturing. Moreover, one or both of the information bits and parity/redundancy bits output from the encoder may be repeated/spread before undergoing selective puncturing to generate a header.
