  • Patent number: 7970373
Abstract: A direct sampling tuner includes a low noise amplifier and an optional dynamically configurable band pass filter coupled to the low noise amplifier. The optional filter is configured to pass a selected band of channels. The tuner further includes a relatively high accuracy, multi-bit analog-to-digital converter (“ADC”) coupled to the LNA or to the optional dynamically configurable band pass filter. The ADC operates at greater than about twice a frequency of a sampled signal. The ADC directly samples the spectrum of the selected channels at the Nyquist rate, thus avoiding image problems presented by conventional tuners.

  • Patent number: 7969361
Abstract: A low profile Planar Inverted-F Antenna (PIFA) comprises a radiating strip, an inductive tuning portion, a vertical feed portion, and a retracted ground plane. The radiating strip is approximately parallel to the ground plane and is suspended above the ground plane by the feed element at a certain distance. Further, the radiating strip, in part or entirely, overhangs the ground plane. In this way, the radiating strip may be suspended very close to the ground plane, but yet exhibits a large bandwidth.

  • Publication number: 20110149866
Abstract: A baseband processing module for use within a Radio Frequency (RF) transceiver includes a downlink/uplink interface, TX processing components, a processor, memory, RX processing components, and a turbo decoding module. The RX processing components receive a baseband RX signal from the RF front end, produce a set of IR samples from the baseband RX signal, and transfer the set of IR samples to the memory. The turbo decoding module receives a set of IR samples from the memory, forms a turbo code word from the set of IR samples, turbo decodes the turbo code word to produce inbound data, and outputs the inbound data to the downlink/uplink interface. The turbo decoding module performs metric normalization based upon a chosen metric, performs de-rate matching on the set of IR samples, performs error detection operations, and extracts information from a MAC packet that it produces.

  • Publication number: 20110149895
Abstract: A system for reducing the bandwidth required to transmit a data packet via a wireless network is provided. In an embodiment, the system is configured for generating a packet to be transmitted via the wireless network. Once a packet is generated, a packet type of the packet to be transmitted via the wireless network is determined. Based on the packet type, a suppression rule is selectively applied to the packet to generate a suppressed packet. Applying the suppression rule includes suppressing at least a portion of the header of the packet and adding a descriptor associated with the header suppression rule to the packet. The system is configured to conclude with the transmittal of the suppressed packet via the wireless network.

  • Publication number: 20110150499
Abstract: A system, method, and computer program product for synchronizing time between a centralized controller device and at least one subscriber device on a fiber access network. The control layer of a network device is expanded, and additional messaging control is added via the transmission of data frames. The expansion prevents reliance on a physical layer signal. The time synchronization also allows a time stamp to be incorporated into a message. Thus, bandwidth is not wasted by simply transmitting a time stamp by itself. In an embodiment, the centralized controller device measures the time difference between the time at which a particular ranging request is transmitted and the time at which the particular ranging request is received. The time difference represents the time adjustment value for the particular subscriber device and allows the device to synchronize its time with that of the centralized controller device.

  • Patent number: 7965994
Abstract: Certain embodiments for an analog zero-IF interface for GSM receivers, where a receiver may receive RF signals and downconvert the RF signal to a VLIF signal in the analog domain. The VLIF signal may be further downconverted to a baseband signal in the analog domain. The baseband signal may be an analog signal. Aspects of the invention may comprise amplifying the received RF signal, mixing the amplified RF signal down to a VLIF signal, filtering the VLIF signal, amplifying the VLIF signal, mixing the filtered VLIF signal to a baseband signal, and filtering the baseband signal. The local oscillator signal to the mixer that may downconvert the RF signal to a VLIF signal may be an output of a programmable local oscillator, and may be one of a plurality of frequencies. The mixer that generates the baseband signal may be a harmonic-reject mixer.

  • Patent number: 7965215
Abstract: Aspects of a method and system for variable resolution data conversion in a receiver are provided. In this regard, an analog received signal may be converted to a corresponding digital signal, wherein a resolution of the corresponding digital signal may be varied (e.g., by configuring one or more switching elements) for the conversion based on one or more determined characteristics of said received signal. The resolution of the conversion may be determined based on characteristics of in-band and/or out-of-band signals. The resolution may be increased when received signal strength is below a threshold and may be decreased when received signal strength is above a threshold. Similarly, the resolution may be increased when interference is above a threshold and may be decreased when interference is below a threshold. The resolution may be increased when error rates are above a threshold and decreased when error rates are below a threshold.
