Patent number: 9106454Abstract: Embodiments of an apparatus and method for selective single-carrier (SC) equalization are provided. Multipath propagation in a communication channel often changes, and the severity of multipath propagation is often below worst case conditions supported by a SC communication device. When multipath propagation is less severe and below worst conditions, the use of frequency-domain equalization (FDE) in a SC receiver to mitigate ISI can be overkill and can result in excess power being consumed. The excess power consumption can be attributed to the general inability of the structure used to perform FDE to scale in terms of performance with channel conditions. Embodiments of the apparatus and method for performing selective equalization in a SC receiver allow either FDE or time-domain equalization (TDE) to be performed based on the current multipath propagation conditions of a communication channel. In general, TDE is used in place of FDE to conserve power when channel conditions permit.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 2013Date of Patent: August 11, 2015Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventor: Alireza Tarighat Mehrabani

Patent number: 9106437Abstract: A STB, communicatively coupled to a server, receives a web page request when, for example, a URI, is entered into a web browser running in the STB. In response, the STB sends a processing assistance request to the server for processing the entire web page regardless of processing capability of the STB. The STB receives processed information resources or contents associated with the entire web page from the server. The server retrieves information resources or contents associated with the entire web page from a web server based on the received processing assistance request. The server determines content type such as video and/or graphics of the retrieved information resources or contents for corresponding content processing. The server determines content formats supported by the STB for content encoding. The STB decodes the resulting encoded information resources or contents from the server to render the entire web page in the STB.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 2009Date of Patent: August 11, 2015Assignee: BROADCOM CORPORATIONInventors: Vladimir Silyaev, Marcus Kellerman, Xuemin Chen, David Erickson

Patent number: 9106280Abstract: Embodiments recognize that in MIMO and M-MIMO systems, physical antennas tend to be closely spaced to each other (e.g., a grid). As a result, a spatial correlation typically exists between physical antennas as well as between transmissions from logical antenna ports. Embodiments exploit this characteristic to reduce the amount of pilot signaling needed to enable downlink channel estimation. Specifically, embodiments limit pilot signaling to only a subset of supported logical antenna ports and rely on spatial correlation information to interpolate channels from logic antenna ports for which no pilot signaling is used.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2013Date of Patent: August 11, 2015Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Sam Alex, Amin Mobasher, Louay Jalloul

Patent number: 9106242Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed to compensate for impairments within a data converter such that its output is a more accurate representation of its input. The data converter includes a main data converter, a reference data converter, and a correction module. The main data converter may be characterized as having the impairments. As a result, the output of the main data converter is not the most accurate representation of its input. The reference data converter is designed such that the impairments are not present.
