Patent number: 4453257Abstract: This invention is a digital phase modulator for microwave transmitter systems. A digital signal is bandwidth limited at baseband, then is shaped to compensate for the nonlinear reflection coefficient versus bias voltage characteristics in a phase modulator. The shaped signal is applied to the phase modulator to modulate a carrier. The carrier signal is derived from a high power amplifier operating at its maximum power handling capability. Linear multiplication is then obtained, and use of linear intermediate frequency stages, up-converters as well as operation of the high powered amplifier at less than maximum power to obtain linear operation is thus avoided.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 1982Date of Patent: June 5, 1984Assignee: Canadian Patents and Development LimitedInventors: Gerald J. P. Lo, Misel Cuhaci, N. S. Hitchcock

Patent number: 4451424Abstract: Polysulfone cast films, including polyethersulfone cast films, are partially gelled with mineral acid prior to or during the conventional water gelation to control the porosity of and improve the productivity of reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration membranes thus produced. The partial gelation may be carried out prior to the water gelation by contacting the cast film with the mineral acid in a gaseous or aqueous form and the gaseous form may be diluted with air. The partial gelation may, in different embodiments, be carried out simultaneously with the conventional gelation by dissolving the mineral acid in the gelation liquid.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 1982Date of Patent: May 29, 1984Assignee: Canadian Patents & Development LimitedInventors: Thomas A. Patent number: 4435429Abstract: A process for treating cereal grains and particularly oats, to separate the endosperm from the remainder of the kernel without dry milling. The grains are soaked in an aqueous medium having a pH of 3.0-7.0 at a temperature in the range 40.degree.-70.degree. C. for sufficient time to absorb at least an equal weight of the liquid medium. The conditions are such that the endosperm portion of the grain liquefies, as opposed to softens. The grain may be crushed in a variety of ways to split the husk and release the liquid endosperm contents which are then dispersed in water. The endosperm solids can be recovered from dispersion, following a screening step to separate the husks by drying to yield a substantially white, lower fiber whole endosperm flour product. Alternatively, the dispersion may be sedimented and/or centrifuged to produce a wet solids fraction and a soluble fraction, each of which can be subsequently recovered in dry form.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 1982Date of Patent: March 6, 1984Assignee: Canadian Patents and Development LimitedInventors: Vernon D. Patent number: 4414654Abstract: The thinned arrayed transducer for a sonar system includes an array of sonar elements mounted in rows (layers) and columns (staves) on a structure, preferably cylindrical, to form a checkerboard pattern wherein the spacing between adjacent elements in the rows and the columns is equal to or greater than .lambda..sub.m /2, where .lambda..sub.m is the wavelength of the signal of frequency f.sub.o transmitted in the medium where the sonar is being used. The transducer structure is made from a layered cloth impregnated with a phenol based material, and includes openings in which the sonar elements are mounted. The sonar elements which are effectively a half wavelength in length consist of a cylindrical ceramic section fixed end-to-end to a cylindrical metal section. The metal section is made of a loading metal, such as brass. The transmit-receive circuitry energizes the elements by row using a modulated signal to form a variable sonar beam.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1982Date of Patent: November 8, 1983Assignee: Canadian Patents and Development LimitedInventors: Eugene E. Patent number: 4393869Abstract: The breathing cycle of a patient is controlled to achieve proper ventilation and at the same time minimize the work of distension of the lungs. Oxygen enriched air is delivered to the patient during the inspiration period such that the pressure waveform is a ramp function having initial and final values which are dependent on the resistance, compliance and alveolar volume of the lungs. The apparatus includes a source of oxygen enriched air at a regulated pressure and a pneumatically controlled pressure reducing valve for reducing the pressure of the oxygen enriched air for delivery to the patient. The valve is controlled by a transducer which converts an electrical control signal into a pneumatic control signal. The electrical control signal which is generated by an electronic control circuit, is a function of the parameters of the patient's lungs.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1981Date of Patent: July 19, 1983Assignee: Canadian Patents & Development LimitedInventors: Abraham Boyarsky, Jack Friedman, Athanasios Christodoulopoulos, Rock Lee

Patent number: 4387091Abstract: Certain isolated fractions, extracted from allergy-causing molds, have been found to be antigenic but non-allergenic, and are able to decrease substantially or prevent the susceptibility to mold allergens of allergic individuals. The antigenic non-allergenic fractions contain protein and carbohydrate and have molecular weights which have been found to vary with the mold source. Increased polyvalent protection can be realized by combining fractions from different molds, e.g. Alternaria with Hormodendrum or Helminthosporium. The extracts are administered parenterally, preferably subcutaneously in isotonic saline.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 1981Date of Patent: June 7, 1983Assignee: Canadian Patents & Development LimitedInventors: Hari M.
