Abstract: A member for a structure can include a substrate having a visible outer surface. The member can also include a solar control layer disposed between the substrate and an outdoor environment. In an embodiment, as seen along an outer surface of the member, the solar control layer does not significantly alter the appearance of the member as compared to the member in an absence of the solar control layer. Such appearance can include a particular color, wood grain, masonry surface, another suitable appearance characteristic, or any combination thereof. In another embodiment, a member for a structure can include a substrate, an intermediate layer, and a solar control layer, wherein the intermediate layer comprises a primary material that is susceptible to significant degradation when exposed during a plasma deposition.

  • Publication number: 20120145306
Abstract: A process of forming a member for a structure can include depositing a solar control layer over a first substrate, wherein depositing is performed using a plasma-assisted technique. The process can also include coupling the solar control layer and the first substrate to a second substrate. The process can further include removing the first substrate from the solar control layer while at least a portion of the solar control layer remains coupled to the second substrate. In an embodiment, second substrate can include a substrate for a structural member. Due to the composition or size of the substrate, the process described herein can be used to deposit a solar control layer that is initially deposited on a different substrate and is subsequently transferred to the substrate of the structural member.

  • Patent number: 8192658
Abstract: The present invention provides exterior building products, such as roofing and siding, shake, shingles, siding, sheathing, panels, planks, vertical siding, soffit panels, fencing, decking, fascia, corner posts, column corners and trim boards in which a plurality of cementitious layers are provided with an improved interlaminar bond by employing a resinous bond promoter, a rheological agent, mechanical means to distribute fibers in a direction which is perpendicular to the machine direction so as to bridge between layers in the product, or a combination thereof. These techniques help to increase interlaminar bond strength to improve the mechanical properties of the product. When certain resinous bond promoters are used, the additional benefits of water absorption resistance and pigmentation throughout the product can be provided with minimal expense. Improvements in interlaminar bond strength of about 10 46% were observed with a percent elongation improvement of about 7%.

  • Patent number: 8128857
Abstract: A method of shortening cycle time required to compression mold shingle or tile is provided, wherein carrier plates are comprised of a surface material and a base, and receive a thermoplastic material, thereon. The roofing material is applied to the carrier plate and the carrier plate is subjected to induction heating, by which its surface material has its temperature raised, without substantially raising the temperature of the carrier plate base, such that the thermoplastic material applied thereto is kept heated in the compression mold. Cooling of the thermoplastic material is by heat transfer from the carrier plate surface material to the carrier plate base, and with both materials having good heat conduction capability. The carrier plate surface material has a high receptivity to being heated by induction heating relative the carrier plate base. The carrier plates are serially delivered through the process, to the compression mold.

  • Publication number: 20110297310
Abstract: Disclosed are building board manufacturing techniques that minimize the build-up of slurry on associated forming equipment and also produce panels with enhanced physical properties. The methods involve applying a dissolvable film laminate to one or more fiber mats at the outset of the forming process. In the un-dissolved state, the film acts as a containment envelope for the gypsum slurry and any free floating glass fibers. During subsequent curing, the film is dissolved by vaporized water. In its dissolved state, the film is liquefied and coats the fibers of the underlying mat. This results in a building board with improved physical properties.
