    Abstract: In a process for the manufacture of a p-alkylphenol by alkylating phenol with an olefin of 3 to 4 carbon atoms, at an elevated temperature, in the liquid phase, in two reaction zones in series and in the presence of a strongly acidic ion exchange resin as the catalyst, an improvement comprises:(a) passing in a first reaction stage at a temperature of 80.degree.-140.degree. C. over a suspended catalyst, the olefin as a gas at a gas velocity of 30 to 20 cm/second, based on the free cross-section of the empty reactor and on a molar volume of 25 liters per mole of olefin, from below into the reaction mixture; and(b) passing the resulting liquid reaction product, into a second reaction stage, at a temperature of 80.degree.-140.degree. C. over a fixed-bed catalyst;wherein a catalyst having an exchange capacity of 70-120 m. equivalents/100 cm.sup.3 is used in both reaction stages.

    Abstract: In a process for removing monomeric impurities from an aqueous dispersion of homopolymers or copolymers of vinyl chloride having a surface tension below 60 dyn/cm. by treatment with steam while avoiding foam formation by a rapid lowering of the pressure at high flow velocities, the improvement which comprises:(a) continuously mixing said dispersion in a flow pipe with steam at a steam pressure of 800-4660 millibars for an average residence time of about 0.01-5 seconds;(b) continuously passing the resultant admixture from said flow pipe at a velocity of at least 30 meters per second directly to a degasification vessel having a pressure of 133-660 millibars; and(c) continuously recovering a polymer product containing less than 20 p.p.m. residual monomer impurities therefrom.

    Abstract: The low molecular water-soluble onium-catalyst dissolved in the liquid mixture of epoxy resin and excess epihalohydrin obtained by the reaction in the presence of base of a compound having --OH, --SH, --COOH or .dbd.NH groups with excess 1-halo-2,3-epoxyalkane, is separated therefrom by contacting the liquid mixture, either prior to or after separation therefrom of the precipitated salt produced by the reaction, with at least about 5 parts by weight based on the weight of the catalyst present in the liquid mixture, of an adsorbent containing or capable of absorbing at least 1% by weight of water so strongly that it cannot be removed either by drying over concentrated sulfuric acid or by drying at 110.degree. C. and can only be partially removed by drying at 200.degree. C. under vacuum (about 1 millibar), and then separating the adsorbent with catalyst adsorbed thereon from the liquid mixture.

The thus-obtained, activated palladium complex is recovered, after termination of the telomerization and/or oligomerization, by adding 2-6 molar equivalents of triphenylphosphine to the reaction product, distilling the telomer or oligomer therefrom and recovering the thus-regenerated palladium tetrakis(triphenylphosphine) from the distillation residue.
