Patent number: 5616237Abstract: A fluid catalytic cracking unit equipped with multiple feed injection points along the length of the riser is operated such that portions of the same fresh feed are charged to different feed injection points. Preferably, the hydrocarbon fresh feed can be split into two or more non-distinct fractions, with one fraction charged to the bottom injection point along the length of the riser reactor, and the remaining fractions charged to injection points progressively higher up along the length of the riser reactor with the temperature of the upper injection feed fractions being different from that of the lowest injection point fraction prior to entry into the FCC riser reactor. Hydrocarbon products from the cracking process can be recycled to one or more of the various injection points along the length of the riser.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 1996Date of Patent: April 1, 1997Assignee: Chevron Research and Technology Company, A Division of Chevron U.S.A. Patent number: 5593570Abstract: A physically intermixed catalyst system comprising two distinctly different catalytic particles, the first of which is a hydrodenitrification and/or hydrodesulfurization catalyst and the second of which is a relatively active hydrocracking catalyst, wherein the catalyst particles of both catalytic components are substantially the same size, that is the effective diameter of each catalyst component is substantially the same. The catalyst system of the present invention can be layered with unmixed catalysts. The novel systems of the present invention have been found to provide surprisingly good selectivity for liquid products and stability against catalyst fouling when used in combined hydrotreating and hydrocracking applications, and can therefore be used to provide a stable catalyst system which offers even heat distribution and reactor control in such applications.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 1995Date of Patent: January 14, 1997Assignee: Chevron Research and Technology Company, A Division of Chevron U.S.A. Patent number: 5526684Abstract: A self-regulating apparatus and method for measuring the components of a multiphase petroleum stream includes initially stratifying an incoming petroleum stream into substantially liquid and gas streams. The initial fluid stratification allows a flow-splitting separation to occur as the streams first enter a vertical separation tube. By positioning the inflow line eccentric to the vertical separation tube, a liquid vortex is created by the incoming liquid component to further enhance the liquid/gas separation. The liquid component is then drawn off by a liquid flow line also eccentrically positioned on the vertical separator, thereby minimizing the energy dissipation of the liquid vortex. Both the gas and liquid components can then be individually measured before being recombined at a common outflow port for discharge.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 1994Date of Patent: June 18, 1996Assignee: Chevron Research and Technology Company, a Division of Chevron U.S.A. Patent number: 5522983Abstract: A process is provided for converting a hydrocarbon feedstock comprising the steps of introducing the hydrocarbon feedstock to a first hydroconversion zone at superatmospheric pressure and at a temperature between about 450.degree. F. and about 850.degree. F. in the presence of hydrogen, the hydrogen flowing in a countercurrent relationship to the hydrocarbon feedstock, to form a hydrogen-rich vapor effluent and a hydrocarbon-rich liquid effluent; reacting the hydrogen-rich vapor effluent in a second hydroconversion zone to form a converted vapor effluent; and introducing a portion of the hydrocarbon-rich liquid effluent to the second hydroconversion zone in countercurrent relationship to the hydrogen-rich vapor effluent. By recycling to the second hydroconversion zone a stream having sufficiently high boiling range that it remains a liquid, a greater range of operating conditions are possible in the second hydroconversion zone, thus allowing for higher conversions and product yields.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1992Date of Patent: June 4, 1996Assignee: Chevron Research and Technology CompanyInventors: Dennis R. Patent number: 5520329Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring and compensating for the impact of environmental effects on industrial processing units. A thermal test element having a low thermal mass and high conductivity is exposed to the environment. Ambient air temperature is sensed at a nearby location, and a differential temperature controller determines how much energy is required to maintain the test element at a desired temperature differential from ambient temperature. Duty cycle and wattage outputs enable feedforward compensation for environmentally induced process unit control disturbances.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 1994Date of Patent: May 28, 1996Assignee: Chevron Research and Technology Company, a Division of Chevron U.S.A. Patent number: 5502266Abstract: The present invention deals with separating well fluids produced from a gas condensate reservoir into a condensate phase and a gas phase. The invention provides combining two stage separation, a stabilizer column and gas processing systems to achieve increased liquid yield and dry gas for take off (export) with much lower energy costs and capital costs. First stage separation pressure is maintained between 600 psi and 1500 psi. Second stage separation pressure is maintained at a higher pressure than that required to achieve the liquid vapor pressure specification, usually between 400 psig and 600 psig. The stabilizing column produces a stabilized liquid (preferably having a vapor pressure about 8.2 psia at 80.degree. F.) by operating the column bottom at approximately 240.degree. F./50 psig.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 1992Date of Patent: March 26, 1996Assignee: Chevron Research and Technology Company, a Division of Chevron U.S.A. Inc.Inventor: John E. Hodson

Patent number: 5439583Abstract: A process is disclosed for removing residual sulfur from a hydrotreated naphtha feedstock. The feedstock is contacted with molecular hydrogen under reforming conditions in the presence of a less sulfur sensitive reforming catalyst to convert trace sulfur compounds to H.sub.2 S, and to form a first effluent. Patent number: 5416697Abstract: A method for determining rock mechanical properties and for selecting a drill bit is disclosed. A set of electrical log data parameters over a selected zone in a wellbore is provided, and the respective shale and non-shale volumes are determined. A fluid-corrected Poisson's ratio for the non-shale volume is determined. Shear wave velocity for the shale volume is then determined and a corrected Poisson's ratio, relating to shale volume and fluid composition is determined. Uniaxial compressive strength, angle of internal friction, and cohesive shear strength can be determined, and drill bits selection can therefore be made more accurately.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 1992Date of Patent: May 16, 1995Assignee: Chevron Research and Technology CompanyInventor: Harvey E. Patent number: 5407558Abstract: A method is provided of selecting operating parameters for an aromatization process having at least penultimate and final stages, each containing a respective catalyst, for optimum aromatic barrel per calendar day (AB/CD) production of product having a selected RON and/or over a particular run length. The catalyst lives are determined at constant LHSV for the penultimate and final stage catalysts for a given feed RON to each stage as a function of the change in RON from that of the feed to that of the C.sub.5+ effluent from the respective stage. The penultimate stage C.sub.5+ effluent RON is selected to be such that the lives of the catalysts in each stage are substantially equal. Preferably the yield of C.sub.5+ effluent from each stage and the life of the catalyst used in each stage is determined as a function of the pressure of that stage. The operating pressures of the stages are then selected to be within about 30% of that which gives the highest AB/CD.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 1991Date of Patent: April 18, 1995Assignee: Chevron Research and Technology CompanyInventors: Jules M.
