  • Patent number: 5316413
Abstract: An offshore double cone structure for operation on an ocean foundation has a double-cone concrete shell having a neck ring at the top of the shell and a base caisson that supports the double-cone shell. The caisson rests on the ocean foundation. The environmental loads, topside weight, and self weight of the double-cone shell are transferred by double-cone shell action through the base caisson to the foundation. The base caisson's exterior wall can be either vertical or sloping. The neck ring is at an elevation sufficiently high that the wave and ice interactions with the neck ring do not increase global ice loads acting on the structure. The neck ring has sufficient area to provide room for facilities through the neck.

  • Patent number: 5305829
Abstract: A steam drive method for low permeability formations is described which utilizes a plurality of wellbores in an elongated pattern configuration. The wells initially undergo a cyclic steaming and production operation, wherein as each steaming cycle is initiated a fracture system is created having a heated zone surrounding each fracture. The cyclic steaming and production is repeated until thermal communication between vertical fracture planes is established, and oil recovery through the single well stimulation is significantly reduced. Thereafter, cyclic steaming is halted and new injection wells, centrally situated, are established and used to initiate a steam drive, wherein the heated zone around the fractures helps to reduce the viscosity of and mobilize the hydrocarbons not initially recovered during the cyclic steaming operation.

  • Patent number: 5300929
Abstract: A method of using oriented seismic sensors to delineate the surface of a geologic unit having an anomalous velocity, such as salt dome is disclosed. Seismic sensors having three orthogonal axes of sensitivity are sealed in a housing and are attached to the outside of a tubing means. The tubing means is lowered into a wellbore that penetrates the geologic unit to a known depth, and a liquid such as cement is pumped through the tubing and up the annular space to fixedly attach the sensors to the geologic formation. The orientation of the sensor axes can then be calculated from an observed orientation of the reference directions of the sensor housings. Seismic wavefields are then propagated through the geologic unit and the surrounding earth, and are observed by the sensor axes of sensitivity, and are recorded and transmitted to the top of the tubing.
