Patent number: 4836053Abstract: A dual planetary gear reduction assembly for a two-wheel/four drive vehicle transfer case mechanism providing an exact two-to-one gear reduction ratio during full-time four wheel drive operation. The dual planetary is uniquely designed to provide a grounded carrier supporting inner and outer sets of planetary gears operative to rotate an ungrounded annulus gear and a meshing annulus plate in the same direction as the input shaft. A sun gear, having a predetermined number of helical teeth, is formed on the input shaft while the annulus gear has a predetermined number of internal teeth exactly twice the number of sun gear teeth. A clutch collar is internally splined on the output shaft and has external splines operative, when the collar is shifted into its low-range mode, to engage internal splines on the annulus plate and drive the transfer case output shaft at the two-to-one gear reduction ratio.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1988Date of Patent: June 6, 1989Assignee: Chrysler Motors CorporationInventors: Richard E. Patent number: 4829979Abstract: An impact absorbing device is provided for a vehicle having a bumper. The device comprises an energy absorber having an axis along which it is reducible in length at a substantially uniform rate in response to an impact force to absorb the energy of impact. At last one bendable plate is secured between the vehicle frame and bumper adjacent to but spaced vertically from the energy absorber. When the bumper is impacted with a force at an angle to said axis, the plate will bend in a direction generally perpendicular to the axis and constrain the energy absorber to reduce in length along the axis and absorb the impacting force.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 1987Date of Patent: May 16, 1989Assignee: Chrysler Motors CorporationInventor: William H. Patent number: 4821701Abstract: A system and method for the detection and correction of purge corruption in the adaptive memory portion of a control system controlling, in part, the fuel to air ratio during the cold start up of an internal combustion engine. This is achieved by performing two calibrations (or updates) of the adaptive memory cells (or locations) during the previous engine operation. The adaptive memory is first updated with the purge system off. The memory locations addressed at this time are denoted as the purge free adaptive memory cells. Next, the adaptive memory is updated with the purge system on. These memory locations are denoted as the normal adaptive memory cells. During the next cold engine start, purge corruption of the adaptive memory is detected when the difference between the two calibrations exceeds a value representing an absence of purge corruption.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1988Date of Patent: April 18, 1989Assignee: Chrysler Motors CorporationInventors: Robert J.
