Patents Assigned to Clear Wireless LLC
  • Patent number: 7843870
Abstract: Systems and methods for supporting multiple wireless communications technologies are provided. When a first and second base station operate according to different wireless communication technologies on the same carrier frequency in different cells or on different carrier frequencies in the same cell the frame structure of each base station is controlled in such a way that idle periods of transmissions from one base station are aligned with idle periods of the other base station. When the first and second base stations are located in the same cell and operate on the same carrier frequency the frames of the first and second base stations are time-interlaced.

  • Patent number: 7831213
Abstract: Controlling a tower-top low noise amplifier (TTLNA) without transmit mode or receive mode timing control signals from a base station. The TTLNA system and associated components autonomously determine the proper mode of operation (transmit/receive), and automatically control the operation of a low noise amplifier (LNA) to prevent signal distortion and/or damage to the wireless system hardware. A preferred method comprises: at a TTLNA, measuring a transmit time period based on detecting radio frequency (RF) transmit signal energy; determining a receive time duration based on the measured time period and a predetermined frame time; and, configuring the TTLNA to a receive mode by placing a low noise amplifier into a receive signal path during the determined receive time duration.

  • Publication number: 20100278103
Abstract: A system and method for adaptive control of an averaging parameter in a communications network may include an averaging parameter adaptive control module (APAC) that is associated with a base station and that includes one or more processors configured to generate a first averaging parameter that is transmitted by the base station to a mobile station communicating with the base station. The mobile station may use the first averaging parameter to generate first channel condition information that indicates a condition of a communication channel. First feedback information including the first channel condition information may be received at the base station. The APAC may generate a second averaging parameter using the first averaging parameter and the first feedback information and may transmit the second averaging parameter from the base station to the mobile station, thereby adaptively controlling the second averaging parameter based on the first feedback information.

  • Publication number: 20100281322
Abstract: A system and method of increasing data throughput in a wireless communications network between a base station (BS) and one or more mobile stations (MS) includes establishing a service flow (SF) and initially enabling a hybrid automated repeat request (HARQ) protocol; determining, at a particular time, the measure of quality of the communications channel; comparing the determined measure of quality with a predetermined channel quality threshold; and selectively disabling the HARQ protocol based upon a first comparison result while continuing the SF between the BS and MS. In other aspects, after selectively disabling the HARQ protocol, the method further includes determining that the time-varying measure of quality of the communications channel has deteriorated below the predetermined channel quality threshold; and selectively re-enabling the HARQ protocol in the established SF.

  • Publication number: 20100278100
Abstract: A method implemented in a mobile station (“MS”). When the MS transmits, it generates radio frequency (“RF”) energy. To limit exposure to RF energy, regulatory agencies determined a maximum transmit power for mobile stations. The amount of RF energy considered safe is that generated when the MS is transmitting continuously at the maximum transmit power for a predetermined period. The method first determines whether the maximum transmit power is too low to effect communication between the MS and a base station. If it is, the transmit power is increased and if possible, the data transmit rate of outbound data is reduced to at or below a data rate threshold that reduces the RF energy generated by the mobile station to an amount considered safe. Then, any data having a data transmit rate less than or equal to the data rate threshold is transmitted at the increased transmit power.

  • Publication number: 20100255801
Abstract: Systems and methods of unlicensed bi-directional communications over Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) band reserved for licensed communications are provided. A base transceiver station scans the UHF band to identify unused frequency bands. When an unused frequency band is detected, the base transceiver station transmits a tone indicating that the unused frequency band can be used for communicating with the base transceiver station. When the base transceiver station determines that the unused frequency band is being used, then the base transceiver station scans the UHF band to identify another unused frequency band for communications.

  • Publication number: 20100251056
Abstract: Methods and systems for performing hybrid automatic repeat request (ARQ) in conjunction with broadcast/multicast channels are presented. In particular, an access node may transmit a series of hybrid ARQ subpackets to one or more client nodes using a broadcast/multicast channel. Each of the subpackets may be derived from the same full packet. Upon receiving a subpacket, a client node may attempt to decode the full packet from the subpacket(s) derived from the full packet. If the client node fails to do so, the client node may transmit a negative acknowledgement to the access node. If the access node receives more than a threshold extent of negative acknowledgements, the access node may transmit a subsequent subpacket in the series on the broadcast/multicast channel.

  • Patent number: 7693530
Abstract: A radio access network dynamically compiles history data regarding mobile wireless devices that tend to fail successful ranging, e.g., establishment of Layer 1 communication with a radio access node or base station. The history data is obtained from messages sent from the mobile device to the network which contain a count indicating the number of times the device has failed a ranging attempt. If the history (or count) data indicates that a wireless device has experienced ranging failures exceeding a threshold number of failures, the base station responsively blocks the device from attempting any additional ranging for a period of time. The period of time can be short-term period of time or a long term period of time. The methods avoid excessive use of air interface resources by excluding wireless devices which are unable to successfully range. That is, “bad” or “problem” wireless devices are excluded from access to the network.
