  • Patent number: 5401224
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for measuring physical strength by dynamically measuring the instantaneous power of a nonrepetitive muscular force as, for example, the force exerted by a leg extension, on the basis of a power theory and, consequently, the instantaneous power generated by a dynamic, nonrepetitive multi-articular movement such as a vertical jump. Work equivalent to an inertial energy is absorbed by a rotary drive system. This work is then added with an amount of work equivalent to the kinetic energy absorbed by a foot plate, the sum being added to the work done to a powder brake to obtain the maximum speed V.sub.max of the foot plate and its output time T.sub.max. Finally, the power produced by a leg extension is calculated from the maximum speed V.sub.max of the foot plate and its output time T.sub.max.

  • Patent number: 5330253
Abstract: A mechanism for modulating the height of a chair for a small child which is designed such that it can be easily manipulated to adjust the height, and substantially all of the moving parts of the mechanism are enclosed. The chair, having the leg height modulation mechanism, includes a pair of leg assemblies of adjustable height, and a body coupled thereto in a pivotable manner. The front and rear legs of each of the leg assemblies are crossed and pivotally coupled to each other at their midportions. The front leg of each assembly is pivotally coupled at its upper end to a forward end of a support member by a pin. The rear leg is pivotally coupled at its upper end to a rear end of a slider. The slider is fitted in a holder so that the slider can be caused to slide while being guided by a sliding guide opening of the holder. The holder has a nearly U-shaped cross section, and is secured in the support member.

  • Patent number: 5310376
Abstract: A toy that can be assembled by a child. At least one first block element consisting of a rod made of a flexible material including a fitting terminal at one end or opposite ends thereof is provided. The fitting terminal has at least one fitting projection thereon. A second block element has a plurality of fitting holes each adapted to be fitted onto one of the fitting projections. The first block element and the second block element are combined with each other during an assembling operation so as to exhibit a desired three dimensional configuration. Each fitting terminal is provided with a plurality of fitting projections projecting from the outer surface of the fitting terminal so that the fitting projections can be selectively fitted into one of the fitting holes on the second block element. The rod constituting the first block element is composed of a plastically deformable core and a flexible sheath molded of a soft synthetic resin surrounding the core.

  • Patent number: 5308300
Abstract: A step-type training machine in which the exerciser trains using a predetermined load while detecting the pulse of the exerciser, and in accordance with data (e.g. the age, sex and weight) inputted before the training and various data (e.g. the exerciser's pulse) during the training, the step load is varied and controlled during the training so as to impart the optimum exercise load to the exerciser.

The power produced by a leg extension is calculated from the maximum speed V.sub.max of the foot plate and its output time T.sub.max. An apparatus for such measurement includes a base frame; a guide section that extends in the same direction as the base frame; a foot section that slides along the guide section so that its sliding angle is variable; a measuring unit that measures sliding conditions of the foot section; a display unit that displays, visually or aurally, various data on the leg extension of the subject; and a processor means for calculating the power generated by the leg extending force.

  • Patent number: 5260870
Abstract: An apparatus for measuring the instantaneous power generated by a leg extension, which includes a seat provided above a drive system unit on which a subject is seated. A slide rail extends forwardly from the drive system unit, and a foot plate slides along the slide rail in forward and backward directions. A rope connected to the foot plate is provided in the drive system unit in order to be paid out in response to the forward sliding movement of the foot plate. This apparatus also includes a transmission device, which rotates in response to the rope paying-out and a powder brake, which is rotated by the transmission device. A foot load sensor is also mounted on the foot plate in order to detect the foot load developed when the subject extends his/her legs, and a rotation frequency sensor is provided at a predetermined position within the drive system unit in order to detect the rotation frequency of the powder brake.
